i have a metal pad that i got off ebay. pretty sure it was home made and it has been about a year and a half and i have only had to replace the buttons that cracked once a few months ago and there are absolutly no problems during play. than last friday i played with it for the first time on a slim ps2 and at first the down arrow didnt work and than all the buttons stoped working. first i thought it was broken but than i swapped it back to a normal ps2 and it worked fine. Also i noticed that when i use it on the normal ps2 the lights don't work but when i use it on a slim ps2 the lights are always one. i am very confused at why the pad doesnt work on slim ps2's.

Wow...That is very interesting. I have a slim ps2 so that doesnt make me feel good about it. I've never heard any pad problems when it comes to what ps2 you use. And that's weird that the lights work on a slim but not on normal. I would say it's a control box issue, but that just wouldnt make sense. I really dont know but mabey it has to do with the 2 different ports controllor ports or something. Mabey one has trouble activating one part of your pad and the other port has trouble activating another part??? E19.gif E19.gif

PS2's of all sorts are very picky.

Sony changed the slims to be a lot more Sony driven (i.e. some third party items will not work; case in point are multi-taps for 3+ players they must all be Sony brand).

My old (second year) ps2 will not play blue back discs, and no longer makes use of video games vibrate and the RO light up pads, even though both the vibrate and the lights work on other old ps2 systems.

find a different slim and try it out, see what happens.

Hey I have a slim. When I play doubles, my tx1000 doesnt work cause it says "controller1 has been disconnected" or something like that (wow...that reminded me of Disconnected... blink.gif ) I thought it was the control box, but could it be my ps2? it only happens on doubles E19.gif

The control boxes that come with these sorts of pads are mass-produced in Asia. I would guess the problem is supply current. See when sony was working on the PSP, the took the initial design of the electronics and packaged it as the 'slim' PS2. This gave them time to perfect manufacturing methods and further refine the design before releasing the PSP. It would have been a disaster if the PSP had 'quirks' on its initial release. Anyway the smaller electronics have more narrow tolerences for supply current. If I had this problem I would try to build a 'buffer amplifier' for the control inputs. It would basically allow the pad get it's supply current from some other source than the PS2 and would make the controller appear to draw almost no current from the PS2. Zero signal current is usually one of the simplyfing design assumptions with these sorts of things - unfortunately that doesn't play well with lights, dance pads, vibrations, and multi-taps all of which get power for their electronice from the PS2.

Wait are you saying that It's my ps2 and I have to build this big ol thing?!?! Are you sure? I actually use my tx1000 with a softpad, if that makes a difference. I am about to get 2 new tx4000s too, and now I reallize that they still wont work with doubles. This really sucks. Man... Wait... erm.gif ...How come when I play a game like burnout 2 player on my ps2, it works fine? Is it cause the dance pad takes more electricity or something...?

Don't despair, it's just a guess, and I could certainly be wrong. But, yes, dancepads take more electricity because of the large circuitry. The 'sesnor' itself is a large piece of metal which contacts another large piece of metal. When you touch them together the electricity crosses over. When the come apart, they act a a capacitor because there is a huge surface area between which creates magnetic flux. This pulls current from the PS2. I have problems with those contol boxes locking up my USB stepmaina all the time. As far as creating the device goes, if you understand circuits its simple, just buffer the 'common' input to the pad, then it won't draw current from the PS2. In reality, it would be cheaper to source a 'first-gen' PS2 from ebay. I just thank my lucky stars that my PS2 crapped out under warranty and I got a new big one in 03.
