ya our principle lets us do pretty much whatever on the day befor christmas break. so we brought in ddr when we started playing the teacher watching us thought that this would be a good idea to put in gym class then the principle said the same thing when she walked in and was saying that it would make kids more interested in gym so they might have it at our school next year to bad i am graduating disgust.gif

The good things always seem to happen the year after you graduate, don't they?

I wonder how many schools we don't know about actually have DDR in their curriculum, let alone extra-curriculur activity.

I've brought my home set-up to two health expo's locally and for the older audiences. At both many people played for the first time and realized how simple a game it was, and purchased it for themselves. They now play constantly and several people have come up to me by suprise to thank me...

I have wanted to take mine to health expos but didn't know how to approach the people in charge and/or what do you tell the people you're demonstrating it to.
Also, what 'equipment' are we talking about?
Thanks,

Hmm, depends on the expo. The first one I did was for my job, they were having a health expo so I put together a booth, got RedOctane to sponsor me by giving me a bunch of information pamphlets and 5 ignition pads for prizes. Had my job buy some ITG games in the pre-order phase so I got some free pads and t-shirts for prizes.

It was at the local empty mall, I brought my CPU (Stepmania and removed all questionable content from simfiles), CobaltFlux pads, USB adapter, CPU Speakers, Fans, everything other than the TV. Had a bunch of chairs set-up and used a projector. The prize thing did NOT work some kids who could play whored half the prizes, next time it would be a raffle.

I was asked to do the second expo by someone who went to the first and wanted a DDR display at their health expo. This was at a corporate building, I requested that they provide everything other than the dance pads. I brought a select songlist of only popular songs w/ one announcer and StepMania on a CD and installed it a week earlier to make sure my pads and USB adapter would work fine and that their equipment was adequate (gotta have loud good speakers). I had leftover fliers to give away, and brought my posters no prizes. It was better however, more people played than I expected.

To get people to play, you need someone who is in the know, request an assistant (you'll need one for breaks). They'll have to hand out fliers and nag people to play, eventually a few people will play and really enjoy it and hang around all day making all their friends play. I've also found that under 17 and over 30 are easier to get to try it out.

Get ahold of the facilitators early to reserve a decent sized room, and you may be better off using ignition pads, when people asked where to get the game I had to tell them ignition pads are great for beginners but they still wanted to know where I got my pads... I didn't want to turn anyone off with online ordering for these $350 things. Overall they were both fun, try to keep the showing off to a minimum, people will get scared "I can't do that!!" But when they see beginners playing, it makes them want to try. Also StepMania is a big +, since you can control everything from a wireless keyboard, turn off the exit buttons on the pads, turn off jumps, lots of control.

Good luck, make sure you at least get a free lunch out of it.

After my boss saw how much weight I lost, thanks in part to DDR, the school that I work at has proposed a $800 DDR project (we are a small school) I myself have mixed feelings on this as I had to realize I was overweight to actually start playing DDR daily as well as improving my eating and doing a few other execises on the side. On the other hand, I'm excited to see that I will be able to play DDR at work.(Yes productivity will take a hit if this passes) So yeah, DDR as excercise is really picking up.

Thank you sooooooo much. You've given me so much good info. Now I think I can go into a demo with alot more confidence.
I almost wish I had Stepmania and could customize like you. I say -almost- because I think some of the older people who don't know what a PS2 or XBox is or how they work would benefit from seeing how to set it up and get it running.

Since I am an 'old people'(49yrs.) I think I might have an easier time getting other adults to give it a go. In fact, I've had people close to my age stop and ask me about DDR or ITG when I'm in the arcade. I love talking about it and since I can't do anything harder than Light, they don't get intimidated by me. laugh.gif

I'm going to make a list of songs I think people my age might like and draw them in with those. I'm thinking maybe 'Heaven is a 57...' (?) and 'Against All Odds', 'I Will Survive', 'Speed Over Beethoven', 'Play That Funky Music', etc.
I have to tell ya, it takes awhile to get used to that Japanese Pop music. E13.gif

Thanks again,
CindyP

i've been thinking about doing something like this and talking about it with my friends. i figure that i could make a club out of it, but since i'm almost done with middle school, and most of my friends who play DDR go somewhere else, i'll wait. also, my principle has been a real idiot with alot of the rules that he has made up, and probably wouldn't let it go through.

I'll just wait until high school in 12 more weeks i guess.... riiight.gif

haha no kidding. a year after i graduated high school they started building a nice performing arts center. those bastards. luckily they finished a nice-looking library before i finished high school though E1.gif

anyway, having ddr set up for an extra cirricular activity sounds awesome. this type of thing should also be applied to college level physical education courses.
