Just for fun, I tried making up a playlist of songs featured in the US DDR PS2 trilogy of DDRMAX, MAX2, and EXTREME, using songs purchased and downloaded from iTunes. Obviously, I didn't expect to find any Konami originals, and I don't want songs that are covered by other artists - I want the full-length versions of the songs that were edited down to around 1:40 for DDR play. There were a lot I couldn't find that surprised me - no Darude, for instance - and some I didn't bother looking for... Overall, I found eight songs so far, for a playlist just over half an hour:

DANCE-DR iMix: (not yet posted to the actual iTunes store)
1. Somnambulist (Original Version) - BT
Hey, it's one of the songs on all the iPods in the Apple Store. It's what gave me the idea, after all.
2. Diving - 4 Strings
Very nice song overall.
3. Move Your Feet (Radio Edit) - Junior Senior
Yeah, I'm a wimp; I do not need an explicit version of this one. [D*mned catchy, though.]
4. Get Down Tonight - KC And The Sunshine Band
Great disco song; lots of instrumental in the middle.
5. Love At First Sight - Kylie Minogue
Pretty good pop.
6. The Reflex - Duran Duran
I already had this on my iPod from a Greatest Hits compilation, but I'm pretty sure it's on iTunes - Duran Duran's songs are.
7. Take Me Away (Into The Night) - 4 Strings
Very good, although after the fade it sort of starts playing another song and abruptly ends.
8. Heaven - DJ Sammy & Yasou feat. Do
Excellent dance pop. Was actually playing in the mall.

Yeah, it's all MAX2 and EX, but hopefully I'll find some of MAX's songs somewhere. Interestingly, I looked at Days Go By, but to get the 7-minute track, you have to purchase the album itself. Boo.

Meh, I think it's worth it - IMO, the track you want is the worst one on the CD anyway...

Those are all US licences. That's why I don't subscribe to music downloading sites. They don't have the music I want. If all I had to do was pay 1 dollar for an E-rotic, Cap'n Jack, or whatever else song, I hella would, but as it stands, I can't. I just paid heavy import prices for a European DDR band CD. Sorry if I dragged the post in a direction it wasn't supposed to put it in.

No offense - but what kind of music is "the music you want"? Do you only listen to JPop and stuff from Japan or something? Music from here in the States and the like isn't terrible, a lot of it is really good. And most music downloading sites are also going to incorperate a lot of popular Trance and Techno into their sites too.

So what if they don't have Captain Jack and E-Rotic? You can find their music elsewhere. Like Napster or something.

Now to be back on topic:

I just used my DDR Soundtracks to make an iTunes playlist for my 'Pod. I made a Legend Road playlist for really no reason at all. LOL. But that's a good idea. Put together a playlist of licensed music and stuff. I think I'll do that later.

I actually put a playlist on iTunes a couple months ago-- but I included a couple japanese mix songs (I remember Tubthumping was on there...) as well as Ultramix 2 music. May not be 100% up to date because I was adding to this list as UM2 songs were being announced, but it should be pretty close...

Here's the link I have for it (can't verify it at work though but it should still work...)

Euh? I don't think "Radio Edit" means that they edited explicit lyrics out of the song in this case. I'm guessing there's an extended version of the song somewhere that's 5 minutes plus, and they just edited it for length, as radio stations seldom if ever play songs longer than 3 or 4 minutes long.

Great catch on Will I?, skie! I admit, except for a part toward the middle, the version on the album Ace really doesn't sound much like the DDRMAX2 version... and yes, Kunio573, there is a version of Move Your Feet on iTunes which carries an "EXPLICIT" icon, as appears on skie's list. I have avoided hearing this version, which from what I've been able to glean from other posts, has something to do with the phrase "let's get naked." (The words "glean" and "naked" in the same sentence are always funny.)

That's very, very, very odd. o_O I've never seen any explicit version of Move Your Feet myself. The phrases "Get Naked" and "Move Your Feet" don't even appear together on many pages on Google except for a couple of porn sites (obviously). The version of Move Your Feet on Junior Senior's CD doesn't even have such lyrics. I wonder where that version is from. The only thing I can think of is there's a part in the music video where the words "get naked" are displayed, but that wouldn't show up on an iTunes song. As for skie's playlist, I don't have an iPod, let alone iTunes, so I can't see it.

I believe I saw "Strictly Business" on there. It was only the version by EPMD though, not the one Vs. Mantronik.

Yeah, unfortunatley the EPMD version really doesn't sound too much like the DDR MIX, so I left it off.

Sometimes it's hard to keep track of all the new songs that show up on iTunes because of their back catalog adds and stuff like that.... so if you guys see anything new turn up, feel free to shoot me a PM, and I'll update the list that's on there.

It all has to do with music rights and licensing. It sucks, but there's not much you can do about it.

As for explicit vs. ...not explicit, odd story. I just tried looking on iTunes for another video game series with a pretty great soundtrack, the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater / Underground series (not practical for dialup)... not really considering without the inclusion of Goldfinger's Superman. I did notice that neither Dead Kennedys' Police Truck or Rage Against The Machine's Guerrilla Radio are labeled explicit, even though the former, the heavily censored theme from Pro Skater 1, contains fairly strong vocal imagery of hoodlums stealing a police truck and using it to, um, terrorize drunks and prostitutes. The latter repeatedly uses the phrase "Turn that [stuff] up!" in the chorus, censored in Pro Skater 2. So I really, really don't know what iTunes considers explicit and what they don't...

I'm sure that they get the data from the record labels.

Although, funny story, their word filters can be a bit ridiculous at times.

I was looking at the Skinny Puppy album "Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse," and iTMS had: "Mind: The Perpetual I*********e"

In fact, I even blogged about it today, since I started thinking about it..

Yeah, it's been too long to justify reviving this topic, but what the heck.

After looking at several Devo albums, I notice that the album Devo's Greatest Misses contains all EXPLICIT labels, including "Devo Corporate Anthem." This song is INSTRUMENTAL, so obviously if any one song justifies the inclusion of the "PARENTAL ADVISORY: EXPLICIT LYRICS" label on the album, all songs are thus labeled. QED.

Incidentistry, Skie, I notice your playlist doesn't have any KC And The Sunshine Band songs; of course, I see a few songs that are no longer on your playlist (YMCA comes to mind, as it all too often does)...

I put a list of all the licensed songs in DDR in the Ultramix 2 thread somewhat recently. If anyone wants to look those up, feel free to do so.

This would be because it comes from a DJ set. It kinda sucks having mixed versions of songs that aren't in their full set. I have some songs I'd love to go out and spin sometime, but unmixed versions are impossible to find (most notable is a remix of Song to the Siren by This Mortal Coil that Oakenfold played in a set once. I've never seen it anywhere else... ever. And even the oaky mixed version is rare and usually corrupt...gah)

I apologize for resurrecting a long-dead thread, but I felt no need making a new one on the same subject. Besides this is an awesome update.

iTunes Music Store US now has E-Rotic and Captain Jack!!!

For E-Rotic, they have 1998's The Best of E-Rotic, 1999's Kiss Me and 2001's Sexual Madness.

For CJ, they have 2003's Cafe Cubar, 2004's Music Instructor, and 2005's Greatest Hits, which has several DDR songs!

Hey awesome about Captain Jack and E-Rotic being added to iTunes... I went back and updated the old i-Mix I had for DDR songs... I'm hoping it's pretty complete at this point but if there's been any new adds I might have missed them...

http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPublishedPlaylist?id=104588

Please PM me if you see anything new on the store that should be on there or if you see any dead links, it's only by luck I saw this thread E10.gif
