No, it does not have a bar. The only pads that have bars are the TX's and the Blue Shark pad. _________________

Is anybody else having sliding problems with their afterburners?
I know it isn't moving around as much as a soft pad, but after each song I notice that I'm several inches over from where I started. I'll probably just have to use some type of stopper to prevent this. |

I've read through the majority of this thread trying to determine the durability/vitality of the AB pads and so far the only real complaints that I'm seeing are about the control boxes.
I have a question to any maniac step players who've owned their pad for at least 6 months or more. How has it held up? I'm going to be making a choice between getting an After Burner, which is less money and already has recessed arrows and a multi-consol port, or going with the pad everyone keeps harping as the superior pad hands down, Cobalt Flux.
My main issue is that I'm 6'-7" and weigh about 265 lbs and play 9 and 10 steppers on a regular basis. I go through softpads like the Ignitions in about 2 months easily and am looking for durability. Since I have yet to see a major complaint about the AB "dying on them", I'm assuming it's a rather durrable pad, but I'd like to hear from long-time owners to get the entire story.....So, how durable is the After Burner? |

I'm 6'7", 240 lbs and only play 7-8 footers. I had my Afterburner for exactly 3 months until it finally crapped out on me. All 4 arrows cracked within the first month I got it and the left arrow started acting flaky by the end of the third. The control box however was fine (although I got a few disconnects while using it on my Xbox for the first couple games I played with it).
After much hassle and headaches from RedOctane, I finally got a replacement Afterburner 2 MONTHS after sending my broken one back. I ended up selling it on Ebay and used the money to buy a Cobalt Flux from someone in the forums here.
As an owner of both, I can say without bias that the Cobalt Flux is a FAR SUPERIOR pad than the Afterburner in every way. In construction, durability and in sensitivity. Most importantly though, it's a more accurate pad than the Afterburner. For example, most 7-8 footer songs I'd play in Extreme 2, I'd average around 15 "Greats" per song. Now I'm getting around only 5 or 6 per song with the Cobalt Flux. I know I'll be getting my first "AAA" any day now. No way I ever came close to AAA'ing anything when I had my Afterburner.
If you want to use the CF on other consoles, just buy one of those controller adapters that RedOctane sells on its site for $15. It works perfectly with Xbox and PC's. Want recessed arrows too? Buy the arcade mod from CF and you can have them on the Flux. Sure, it costs $100 more than the AB but when you try the CF out for the first time, you'll know where that extra money went. |

The reason why you get less greats on the CF is because it is actually too sensitive compared to all other pads and the arecade pads, this is one of the only bad things about it.
I still get those stupid disconnect issues on the xbox! I'm thinking about getting a cbox from somewhere else. |

So it's a bad thing that my CF performs better than my Afterburner? |

No you have to understand that the goal is to try and get something that's arcade perfect and so far nothing has reached that except for konami's own metal pad. It's too easy to get perfects on a CF making it a bad thing. Example: US titles and mario mix generally have a big perfect window which is a bad thing because we want it just right. |

I think I have a C-Box problem. My Afterburner's left arrow died on me at a party but, the panels give out current. Is this a C-Box problem or do I have to look at the wiring in the back more carefully? (Yes, I took out the non-slip material and opened it from there) |

Just a quick quesion,
What would you guys say is the best PS2-USB convertor for use with a Afterburner in order to eliminate the static disconnect problem that so frequently occurs. I would like to be able to play Stepmania once again, and don't want to waste my time or money buying something that doesn't work. I messed around with a new control box, but that did nothing for me.
I have done considerable searching in both this and the "adaptor" thread, and have found no information on this matter. Either I am an unskilled search artist, or both of the said topics are long and poorly organized. Probably both are true.
Thanks,
Stew |

*sighs* screw this. I played the AB, and I didn't notice any problems whatsoever, despite it being stomped on for pretty much nonstop for 3 days (it was at a convention). After that whole ordeal, I was convinced it was the pad I could really see myself getting for myself. I was certain that when I came home to look at the inevitable AB thread, there would be little to no complaints about it. But there's just too many to warrant a buy anymore. Despite how much quality the AB I played on had.
The Afterburner is still to my mind a great metal pad, but due to the community reaction, I'm gonna have to settle for something that gurantees durability from even the consumers' feedback: The CF.

What?
Why would it be a bad thing for the CF to be sensitive? That's how the arcade metal pads are, unless you got some real bad machines around your way. _________________

ok i'm about 100 pounds, would that make much of a difference for life span of this pad? would i be able to play on tip toes without the arrows cracking? i play on heavy 9 & 10 footers. |

How far do the afterburner arows sink into the pad? My girlfriend got a metal pad, and for some reason the arrows sink REALLY deep into the pad when one hits them. It's really annoying, and I'd honestly rather just use one of the soft pads that came with the game. Is the same thing going to happen with the afterburner? If it is, I don't want to waste my money. So, basically, I guess i want to know if the afterburner has arrows like the arcade pad, 'cause I don't know whether I should get a cf or not. o btw, i'm about 120 pounds and I mostly do 9-footers. _________________

Click on Image 2 for a picture of the recessed arrows, hopefully that helps.
Personally, the arrows are a little too deep for my liking and occasionally my foot will actually get caught on the center panel |
