My band teacher applied for a DDR Club for after school about two months ago (after we had it at a band party). Guess what! The person in charge of the decision on after-school activities (who got back to her the same day she applied for a jazz band) still hasn't replied! Yay! Hopefully after break it will be accepted and we can fundraise for two cobalt fluxes and a PS2.
It will become a Music and Rythym Game Club once Beatmania US comes out! |

I started DDR at my school just before Xmas break.
I was in a stupid depression state for a while and my counselor noticed this and also saw that I dropped out of all my clubs (art, science, etc) and stuff. My grades were also slipping, so when my counselor made a meeting with my mother and me, she brought up the dropping out of clubs issue. She asked why i did what I did, and i simply answered that I hated them. She turned the situation around and asked me what I did like. I almost shouted DDR when asked. She then offered to help me bring DDR to the school and try to start a group. One of the staff members who was present at the meeting told me that one or two students that she sees a lot also loves DDR and she would try to get them to be involved in this "club". I am a fool for competition and possible friend-making, so I agreed and since then, I have tried to put up flyers and stuff for the group to meet after school. Unfortunately. stupid jocks and the uncool "cool" people diss it and patronize me about playing DDR. Also, a lot of people have torn down a lot of the flyers!!! THIS PISSES ME OFF SO MUCH.
Anyways, I had developed a rule system that seemed to eliminate all problems. Home dance pads would be used and the person would be required to bring thier own pad. This ensures that the person would be DDR-active and be responsible for thier own property. This keepis the amount of people low and stable and not chaotic full of n00bs. (i hate myself for saying that, but chances are, an average person at my school would not take the time to learn DDR. They would just try it out, look retarded, probably do some damage in the process, and never come back.) This also eliminates the r-tards who mess up and/or break the pads and act stupid and try to make real DDR players look dumb. I supply all the games (MAX, MAX2, and Extreme) and the equipment. I also am trying to get extra pads for people who really want to learn, and/or play DDR but doesn't own a pad, and/or forgot thier pad, etc. The DDR itself is in the cafetieria, but if enough people get invloved, then the group shall get it's own room in the school.
So far no one has came to the meetings >_< but hopefully when break is over, I am gonna really try to make this work and get people to play. I KNOW that there has to be some people at my school who like DDR, but do not know of the group yet.

Yes, this is the general reaction of most student bodies towards DDR. For some reason the word "dance" somehow translates to actually dancing(!).
This is the problem; I live in an area with cold winters, so people who don't understand how government grants work get all pissy and think that the school is spending money on DDR instead of heat. One of the groups of people who think this were actually planning a rebellion(!). Another group who thought this went up like they were going to play, and instead stomped as hard as they could to try to break the mats. They suceeded, but the school still had a couple thousand in grant money left so they just baught another one(ha ha ha to them) Eventually, that kind of shank slows down and people deal with it. Yeah, a couple of asses will still patronise people who play, but they will be such a small minority. It's cool: Since we got it a kid I know learned how to play and can now do 6's and some 7's, and I'm sure there are a lot of other success stories like this one.

Just a thought: What about Guitar Hero, PIU, ITG, that one PPP port (if anyone has it), Amplitude (you can play it with a PIU mat), etc.?

And yes, there is some bad publicity involved here. Some of the "oh-I-wish-I-was-preppy-so-I'll-wear-Hollister-and-do-whatever-the-cool-people-do" sorta people go all anti-DDR. _________________

My college has a game room, but no DDR machine. There's an arcade about 5 minutes from the school and I always see people from school down there playing DDR. I seriously wish the school would invest in a DDR machine or start a club or something - I know there's quite a few people who play DDR in my school. Had we a machine, there would probably be a line going up the staircase to the second floor of people wanting to play DDR.
It's not as if the game doesn't exist at all in the school...every other quarter, this thing called "Up All Night" is held. All the labs are open so students can make up late work or do work on projects. Also, there's activities going on in certain rooms. LiOne such activity is a room full of people playing video games. DDR tournaments are held, and cash prizes are given to those who place first in each category (Light, Standard, Heavy).
Still, we need a DDR club.. _________________

See the problem with this is, some of those preppy stuck up biatches are actually good, but don't play, which makes tournaments much easier

well um...personally i think it would be great to have DDR in my school. i mean its not like the blasted place cant afford to buy a friggen machine but then again theres the motions i and every other DDRer in the school ::which isnt that many people to my knowledge:: would have to go through just to get the idea approved. but seriously though, it would help a lot if schools actually thought about putting a machine or two in their gym or something. just look at how many kids will actually want to go to P.E. then... _________________

As much as I would love to have DDR in my school, the population of students wouldn't react well to it.
I know very few other students that play. The rest of the school, unfortunatly would probably just damage the machines or pads purposely. _________________

I never thought of having DDR in school before. We have a midterm week right now so I couldn't do anything now but after midterms I'm gonna try to start a club. Thanks to previous post (don't remember who said it now) I'll make it so people bring their own pads to prevent jack***es and noobs. |

My school would never start something like this. They'd complain about having to fund it or allot time for it or find an advisor for it or blahblahblah. Besides that, I know of VERY few hardcore DDR players at my school. I've been called a geek because I'm a girl and I talk about DDR all the time cuz I <3 it,lol.
But then some kid at school works at an arcade I went to and after seeing me play he told everybody how cool I was |

Well, this isn't exactly a school, but this is at a teen center geared towards middle/high-school-aged children:
Over a summer, I decided to bring in a dance pad and StepMania so the regulars who went to this place could play. Obviously not everyone liked it, but there were a few who enjoyed, and played all summer. Then the center bought a PS2 and 2 soft pads so that the kids could just go in and play on their own.
I've been trying to talk the local school into it (obviously being in college I won't ever play there), and who knows, they might invest. The game started only being played by a few of the females in town, and start growing in number when I introduced it to that teen center. |

We're currently trying to get an actual cabinet at our school. What we're worried about is n00bs breaking the machine because they stomp (I know they would ignore the signs on the machine.)
I think I have a solution though. Make n00bs play on softpads and the PS2 version (or SM, for that matter) and only the good players can use the cabinet.
But first we gotta write the letter. *sigh |
