It seems the more and more i go to the arcade i find people who have to pick apart what im doing.

"Ohh yeah he HAD to memorize that to even do that."

Why do people automatically assume you memorize a song? I don't know about anyone else, but i play 9-10 footers, none of which i memorized.

I think it's because the DDR community is growing consistently dumber. Maybe I'm just sick of it, but it seems more and more total morons sign up to these forums every day (as in, the number of morons per day increases semi-exponentially). I think it's appropriate to wonder what is causing the increase in stupidity. My guess is that it's more a removal of intelligence; as in, more of the experienced, level-headed players quit playing because they're tired of it, move on to ITG because they find it more fun, or simply find something better to do.

Because it makes them feel better about themselves--they think they come off as better than you because they didn't waste their time 'memorizing' stepcharts.

When they say that, I carefully introduce them to Shuffle. Then I proceed to let THEM pick a song (of 9-foot or lower difficulty) and either A or AA it.

Followed up with a sarcastic--"Good job. You lose at life. Please go slit your wrists and improve the quality of people on this planet."

It generally works.

I agree completely. I think the mods need to start cracking down on these people. It's really becoming a problem. And I like your idea of having people take a simple test when they sign up.

that actually happened to me once while i was in Hawaii for vacation... and this one asian/haiwaiian mixed guy was so amazed when i was FC'ing PARANOiA Evolution and my dad told him i was memorizing the songs (which i could never learn to do) and then i told my dad and that guy that i wasn't and... well... yeah... crappy story.

Despite the many protests I've heard, it is true that after playing a song a few times you start to memorize it. You begin to learn the arrow patterns, you definitely learn the beat, and while you may think that you haven't memorized any of it, try comparing your scores if you play once normal then once on shuffle. Usually there is a difference.

In defense, it is doubtful that many could play a song backwards on what is gained from playing it a few times, but that doesn't change the fact that part of the song is memorized.

If I play a song enough I'll get to a point where yes, I know the basic rhythmic patterns of the song. I mean, after a few runs through Tsugaru, So Deep, Candy, etc., it's hard not to remember the rhythyms. But do I know arrow placement for the entire song... NO!!! But really, if people did memorize the step charts, there isn't anything wrong with that.

One of my friends has MGS: Twin Snakes, MGS: Substance, Tales of Symphonia, and a few other games memorized. It's extremely annoying, cause he playes through every game he own a billion times (especially Metroid games). So if you start playing one of those with him, he'll be like "Wow you're horrible. I beat this game in 1 hour!." I'll proceed to say "The first time you played it, or after you memorized it?" He;ll anser "The latter!" and I say "Shut up you moron!!" Memorizing isn't cool, but it's still a legit way to get better at the game. The moral is not to shove the fact that you can do better then them, because of memorization, in their face.

I am a firm believer in unintentional memorization. I understand that with unintenional memorization you usually can't just put it on x8 and stealth and AA it, but you would know the rhythm practically flawlessly, just not the actually arrow directions themselves, and sometimes even that. The "weird" part in Afronova towards the beginning is so unique I can do it x8 because its hard NOT to memerize it. But few people actually study a song and memerize rhythm AND the arrows themselves to a point where they can FC it stealthed. Those people are very rare, but in my opinion are quite skilled because they not only test their physical abilities, but their mental abilities as well.

i got this one the other day while playing ITG (i just moved over from DDR) i was doing Tell on Medium and i saw some spin's. so BEING a freestyler by heart i started doing them more often, missing the arrows immedatly after them though E2.gif then this guy comes up to me and says:

"so how long have you been praticing infront of a mirror"

i was pretty shocked, i told him that i really havnt ever play'd ITG before and he was all "well i can do that" and then he played my next turn with me, i ttly spanked him, then i told him i'd play'd DDR for 2 years before hand and he said "so you lied then" i just stopped.... sighed and said "yes, exactally, i lied to you, im sorry" and walked off.

Because that's what it looks like. Most people have a hard time believing that you can just read the arrows and hit them accurately, and if you had no prior knowledge of rhythm games, you would probably assume the same thing.
