Hi I just recently decided to start playing DDR and I like it alot, I have decided to buy my own at home game but I was looking for a few recomendations before I buy a game, and pads. I have heard that the DDRMAX and DDRMAX2 are ok to start off with. I was wondering if this is a good choice to begin with as there are so many games and types of pads to learn on.
Second, I was wondering on the compatability of the pads and games, I have seen many different styles, many with four and sometimes up to eight arrows. I was wondering if I would have to buy new pads each time I buy a new game, or are all the pads compatable with the games?

always push your limits... dont keep playing songs that you are comfortable playing
that is how you get better, along with lots of practice |

MAX and MAX2 r fine to start off with. any DDR is, cept KONAMIX in my opinion. that game is hard. padwise, for a soft pad i would go w/ the RedOctane 2.0 Ignition. i cant help u on a hard pad.
as far as gameplay goes, i got to heavy by just trying beginner, then trying light, then standard, then forcing myself into heavy. also turning off failing will help u a lot! this way,u can finish ur song w/ out a random fail screen coming up. the rest ull pick up on ur own. one last thought DONT LEEV YOUR FEET IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PAD, AND DO NOT USE ONLY UR RIGHT/ ONLY YOUR LEFT FOOT. try different arrows w/ different feet..

probably the best advice you can get. always try to stay comfortable, and try to move fluently. if you have to hit left down right, try using your right foot for left, left foot for down, and left again for right. Many heavy songs have this series of steps repeated. This is commonly known as a crossover, and is probably one of the most helpful things (especially on hard heavy songs)

That might take me awhile to get used to...I would have to turn al the way around and uhh, with my grace ill be sprwled on the floor in no time  |
What GARYYY meant to say (unless I'm misreading his post) was:
right foot for left
left foot for down
right foot for right
THAT's a crossover. So is this:
L R L R L
Practice that pattern until you can recognize it and do it without thinking about it. It helps a lot.
P.S. The best game to get first is Max2. If you're just going to play once in a while on easier songs, get a RedOctane Ignition. But if you plan on being a serious Heavy/Challenge player, go with a metal pad (preferrably the Cobalt Flux - $300 but completely worth it). And when you get the game, make sure to go into the Options menu and turn off Dance Play (under Controller Options, I think).

yeah I get what you both mean, it makes sence, as I'm not that concerned about a crossover ..ill learn that later...

Im thinking this should be in gameplay topic.....
anyway dont give up, practice, certain steps: skips, crossovers, fast doubles, (end of Maxx Unlimited, for n00bs try it on light,) if playing at arcade dont immediately try to show off on light...or standard....(unless its like PSM or a 300+bpm with stream steps.

Yea, all of the skills and stuff tips are good...but a really nice thing to do is make friends. They'll keep you playin the game and its more fun to play with other people...*cough* and show off *cough*
