Another debate is whether or not to play on these with shoes, or to use the plastic top and play with shoes (they sell this plastic top at RedOctane for $15). I personally say, no shoes if you don't have the plastic top, but shoes are fine with the plastic top. The main problem with shoes is that they wreck the fine plastic on top, but with the extra hard layer of plastic you can buy from RO, there's no problems to be had.

Found that here: http://bemanistyle.com/tutorials.php?mode=view&r=10

Can't find anything like that on RO website, any ideas?

I'm recovering from a sprained ankle and could definitely play longer with more ankle support = shoes, any ideas? Unfortunately CF is not possible because of $$$ and I'm kinda not permanent in where I'm living right now.

Not really. You'll probley trash your pad if you play with shoes. I always play with socks.

RedOctane used to sell those, but they haven't had any in stock for ages. A substitute would be a plastic chair mat, like used on carpet in offices. Just don't get the ones with spikes. Still will probably wear out the pad faster, but that's your call.

riiight.gif Cool, thanks! What's the consensus though, will this still wear out my pad faster than no shoes at all? Mine is a topway pad with elevated (ignition type) inserts (working GREAT so far, several weeks).

I'm thinking of getting a new Mymybox ignition clone pad, would it make a difference if I get the hard or soft foam if I'm gonna use this cover to play with shoes (which I already ordered?)

Hey, wow. I'm glad you found that MyMyBox has the covers. I've been looking for a couple of extra ones for ages. Score!

I'm not sure if there's really much of a consensus on whether using a cover and shoes will be more damaging or not, but I would tend to think that it would. Look at it this way: Whether you're wearing shoes or not, having the pad cover will make the surface of the pad last (much) longer. Whether you're using a cover or not, playing with shoes on will transfer more force to the pad, hastening the failure of the foam inside. Now, it may also distribute the force more evenly than bare feet, but honestly, with the way the internal foam (not the inserts) is in these pads, it may not be long for this world anyway.

My best advice: Get a pad cover, and play in socks/bare feet. When the foam between the sensor layers of the pad starts to cause misses/ghosting, replace it with quality foam. I've done that in the Ignitions I got back in '03, and one of them is still going strong right now. The other needs some circuitry repair that I just haven't made the time for. But the cover will definitely extend the life of the topmost layer of the pad.

Oh, and you'll probably be better of with harder foam inserts. Several people swear by using plywood instead of foam, but personally, I play on wood floors, so I prefer the pad to have a little "give" to it with the foam.

Update for those that are interested: I got the cover, but - my pad is being annoying and phantom stepping, I recently ordered new ignition knock offs. (Unfortunately, soft foam, I'm better off really cheap soft which I can buy more of, I think). Now the phantom stepping/non responsiveness seems much worse with the cover and shoes than w/o and socks...so I'll wait and see when I get the new pads. Also, I was thinking, mymybox as this advert on it's site:

¡°I just got one cover today from you and it is awesome... I can't believe I didn't get this sooner... every ddr user should invest in two of these... so I'm ordering my second ddr pad cover. Wow you guys really should make it mandatory to buy a cover with your pads. I really had no idea how awesome these covers are (!!! my pads don't slip or move or bunch up... I'm 200% better now that I don't have to look down every 5 sec to see if I'm still on center.) A+++++ thanks guys¡±

I gotta say, it sounds like that fellow was using one of those super garbage flat softpads we all started with (well I did anyway), in which case a) the cover would be a huge improvement and
b) (here's where it gets interesting) - maybe it would work better (the cover) than with an ignition knock off? I dunno... my last flat pad is far away at parents home so I can't try, all I can report is when my new ignition clones (soft foam) come, and test with the cover...

To get the best result with that dance pad cover, use ignition pad 3.0 or those flat soft pad. as you can see how other people did with that dance pad cover.

Here is the kind of instruction :

------------------ Duct Tape
Top ------------- Dance Pad Cover
Middle ---------- Flat (non slip Dance Pad)
Bottom --------- Plywood

First, Buy plywood at homedepot.com
The pad base is a 3/4" piece of plywood - dimensions are 40" x 36". Use maple because it doesn't cost much more than the fir/pine these days and I think it is easier to work with. Any 3/4" plywood would work however, as long as it isn't warped too bad.

This example

Then put the plat dance pad on the top of plywood, the put the dance pad cover on top of the dance pad then use duct tape out side of dance pad to plywood. If you do it, the dance pad will not move and you can use the dance pad for a long time.

Here is the guide line for ignition pad 3.0 (Dense Foam Insert).

You do not need plywood period.

you put the dance pad then put the dance pad cover on the top of the ignition dance pad 3.0, then use duct tape to tight them together. That is it.

Good Luck

Read this!

This is very helpful! Author :McLarenf1kid

How to modding your pad(s).

supply list:
two 3ft x 4ft pieces of 3/4" MDF board
3M spray adhesive
black duct tape

1. go to Lowe's or Home Depot and find 3/4" MDF board. It's heavy, sturdy and affordable (price depends on store). have them cut the wood for you, two pieces of 3ft x 4ft boards.

2. shake 3M spray adhesive very well and watch the smell!

3. spray adhesive all over board and let it set and get nice and tacky

4. place pumpor dance pad on sprayed board. lay it evenly and make sure to stretch it out well

5. use black duct tape to secure the pad down. start with each edge, then work your way out, overlapping the edges with more tape

6. Then put the dance pad cover on the top of the dance pad.

7. use the dudct pate to secure the dance pad cover and dance pad town.

8. use additional tape to cover exposed wood and voila! that's it.
* advise from BotD, use velcro on the bottom of the pad to allow it to hold to the carpet if you find your mat moving, or get rubber pads for the bottom

the other way on that is to skip the spray adhesive and just use a clear vinyl layer on top and get the pretty thick stuff (fabric store)

so instead of using the all that tape and all, u can just slide it in and it stays pretty well. if you ever need it to come out, its possible. :-d (i did it to mine)

and if u wanted it with foam just get some hard foam and put it in..

you could try getting some really thick plasitc covering and trying to make a soft pad cover and play with shoes, but im not sure if itd work

socks is usually a good way to go. w/o socks it get's annoying cuz when you really get into the game your feet will start to sweat and stick to the surface.
