Ok, I have never played BeatMania IIDX, or seen someone play it, or even know the basic concept of the game. I did see a few screen shots on the Konami Website, and I really don't get it. Let me see if I get how to play...
As the little white lines come down the screen, you must hit the corresponding button. And the scratch thing you must rotate right when the longer line comes down?
The reason why I am asking this is because it looks interesting from the screen shots that I saw. I thought it would maybe be cool to try it out at home, as (not to my knoledge at least) there aren't any IIDX machines around where I live. Is this a wise move, or is it stupid because I have no clue how to play? _________________

You've pretty much got it. White lines go with the white keys, blue lines go with the black keys, and the red line goes with the turntable.
It's a ton of fun, and if you're serious about getting it 10th Style just came out for PS2. Don't know how beginner friendly 10th is, though. From my experiance, 5th is a good one to start out with. |

Might ought to clarify, just in case, that these games are for the Japanese PS2. They won't play on a US system without having a modchip, fliptop, or the like. There's a thread for how to play imports in the console games section of the forum. However, if you're not ready to mod your system to play imports (or to just flat out buy a JPS2) and have some patience, there's a US release of beatmania scheduled for early 2006. |

Well, for this Christmas I planned on asking for at flip top so I could import DDR games, and I thought that this looked cool, and it would be a great idea to give someone as a gift idea.
I think I may try giving this a shot. I saw on Konami's site they had 2 different IIDX controllers, I would try to want to get the smaller cheaper looking one... right? I mean, no point in asking for the more expensive one and not getting that in to it, or being very good at it
Thanks for the info guys! _________________

The two you saw were probably the Konami Official Controller (KOC) and the Arcade Style Controller (ASC). I think the vast majority of players use KOC's, some with modifications, and do just fine. Much in the same way I couldn't really recommend a DDR newbie getting a CobaltFlux right out of the gate, there's no way to say you should spend the money on an ASC right now. For many players, the KOC is the first and only controller, and while it's not the cheapest controller out there, it's the one that's going to give you the most bang for the buck, so to speak. (You may see the Rave Discman somewhere; from what I've heard, run screaming. It's that bad.) |

Well, I think'll be adding this to my Christmas list Looks like another great game from Konami.
CStarFlare, you said that 5th Style was best for beginners, why is that? Easier Difficulty? Different "type" of songs? I was looking around sites and some of the styles look like they play for PS only, and I plan on just modding my PS2 (I don't even have a PS, so that totally cuts out that).
I don't know if this is allowed, but what games do you think would be best for a total noob like me? _________________

Just to give you a sample of how fun beatmania IIDX is, here's one of my Tatsujin (Expert) Videos:
XVI - desolation Another[7]
And in case you can't see the vid, download DIVX codec. _________________

The region of the PS2 makes no difference as to what controllers you can use with it. All controllers can be used with all PS2s. _________________

IIDX (2DX, not eye-eye-DX) is the hardest (except maybe Keyboardmania) and most fun (except maybe pop'n music, but don't start a debate anyone) bemani.
Basic concept: Notes fall down the screen, hit the corresponding button/scratch on the controller, it plays a sound. Playing the song correctly makes the song sound right, doing badly makes it sound as bad as you're playing.
The learning curve is the steepest of any bemani, most people who haven't played games like DDR and other rhythm games usually give up before clearing even the easiest beginner mode song. That said, if you persevere and practise regularly it's easy enough to improve and if you have a few different IIDX games, there are plenty of songs for each difficulty to practise on.
I don't know babout 5th style, having never played it, but 6th style has "Drill mode" which essentially drills you on the basic techniques for playing, and 7th style has Beginner mode for help easing you into the game, but no drill mode. I suggest 7th as it also has a kick-buttocks songlist with plenty of scope for difficulty, easiest songs in the IIDX series to some of the hardest. _________________

I'm sure if it was sold for profit, Konami would clamp down on it (I'm sure it's a matter of time before they clamp down on ITG).[/quote]

That's what I mean. Keyboardmania isn't as "wtf 30 notes a second," or maybe it is on the higher levels, but it's mainly the fact you're playing an entire keyboard that makes it difficult. IIDX doesn't have as much going on in that way, but in IIDX you're playing the drumbeat, bass, synth or whatever other instruments in the song, not just the keyboard. _________________

Thanx for answering my question about the controllers. I got another question, Why is beginner mode locked on IIDX 9? The only difficulty I can get it to is Easy by going in2 settings on the song select screen and thats way to hard |

I think you might be a little confused on what's going on there. The difficulty modes generally available are Light 7, 7 Keys, and Another. 9th Style also includes a Beginner difficulty but it's in its own mode. If you pick Beginner from the main menu, you will only be able to play the Beginner difficulty note charts of songs. If you pick Arcade or Free mode, you can choose the L7, 7K, or A charts of the songs, but not Beginner. (You can change difficulties by pressing the Select button on the Song Select screen.)
The Easy you see is actually a modifier. It causes the groove gauge (lifebar) to fill more quickly when you hit notes correctly, and to deplete more slowly when you miss. You can also turn on Hard, which makes you lose life more quickly on misses, and build it more slowly on good notes; however, if you have any life at all at the end of the song, you clear it. Normally you need at least 80% filled to pass.
While it may seem like it's difficult to get to the song settings, you'll want to get real familiar with the screen. Once you're more into the game, you'll start wanting to set Hi Speed options on just about everything you play. That's available in the same screen. |

IIDX is the hardest bemani game. KBM for the arcade is easy cause you can button mash and still get a Just Great but it requires more skill if you play it naturally. KBM for the CS is alright. It's a little bit harder IMO. :X but yeah... IIDX you can't button mash and expect to get a Just great. _________________
