http://www.geneonanimemusic.com/

The flash part in the upper portion of this site speaks of a Para Para Max US Mix 2 but I don't remember seeing this mentioned anywhere else. Is this just a CD called that for some reason?

Yes, it's a music CD. Click on the October releases on that page to see the track list.

And please don't confuse this with the game. The CD has absolutely nothing to do with the defunct Konami game.

Basically, it's the US version of the same series of CDs in Japan. All the songs are done by Yoko Ishida, and they're all Eurobeat remixes of Anime music. They have Para Para dances for them (hence the name Para Para MAX), and Geneon is promoting the series via a Mall Tour in Jan 2006.

And like BakaOrochi said, it has nothing to do with Para Para Paradise the game that's made by Konami.

So is this a common thing in Japan? Is Para Para some kind of fad that Para Para Paradise was simply based on?

Yes. The dancer motions that you see most PPP players imitating as they play are known as "para para" dances. The game was designed around the fad.
