Believe it or not, I have tried to teach my mom how to play DDR, and I started her on Ordinary World on Light. She failed it, and I ended up laughing so hard. I mean, it's a 1-footer, so... you'd think she'd be able to do it, since she HAS played Konamix (this was with my cousins in CA) before and knew when and where to put her foot...

Maybe she hates it because she failed it or can't understand it...? I'm never sure... Go figure...

KyahRyorin, you have to be patient and courteous with us 'old people'. Laughing at her is not the way to win her over. My teenagers tried to get me on the pads for a whole year before I became a convert. The way it happened was:

My kids set up a playstation with a burned 5th Mix disc, and I did all the Lessons over and over until I was comfortable, without anyone around.
Then I tried the game mode and beginner 1 or 2 foot songs, also without anyone around.
Then I decided I wanted to keep my shoes on, 'cause as I got faster I felt unstable on the soft pads, and bought a couple of CFs.

See, there are advantages to being a bit more sensitive with your mom. My kids got to use really nice pads cause they didn't laugh at me.

But now I'm addicted. Today I went to get some supplies for an after school activity and swerved into the local arcade for a few turns on the 5th mix machine. Yep, I'm hooked. biggrin.gif

Okay, well, I have talked to other adults about DDR, who think I'm a looney tune, but are polite enough not to say it. So, you have to talk up the good, do a little research and leave info. laying around that talks about 'health aspects' of DDR and ITG. Many of the kids I see and know who "Dance" don't do sports, and need a physical outlet.

Geeze, my husband spent $700 on a treadmill, and I spent $600 on the best pads you can buy (Cobalt Flux) and I'll lay odds that I have alot more fun than he does. E13.gif

How I WISH you were my mother... disgust.gif Alas, it's not true, but I think now I'll try to explain the game to my parents and try to get enough money for a system for the game... plus, I'm going to college next year... so that might work to... maybe...

You're right. Maybe I will try again, but let her go at her own pace and everything... and maybe just leave her alone at times when I actually do get a system.

Thank you very much for that explanation, cpurola. I think I'm beginning to understand where my parents are coming from.

My parents like my playing DDR and are wowed when I show them a 7-8 footer so they're like "Oh, wow, Cyndi you're good!" and I just stop and look at them like this E19.gif E19.gif and my brother comes on and tries to freestyle but can't and ends up laying down on the mat and rolling around E4.gif it's fun. I'm sorry to hear about your parents, though. Give 'em time

My mother thinks its great that I have something I'm interested in, however, my dad thinks that I should be doing "real sports" instead..though deep down I don't think he really cares either way. : )

My dad doesn't mind when I play DDR. My mom was okay with me playing DDR at first, but that seems to have changed over the past few months. I think DDR in her perspective has changed from a form of exercise to just another mind-rotting video game. erm.gif The reason I say that is that she yells at me when I play for more than an hour, but doesn't tell me why it's a bad thing. She always says something along the lines of "you don't need to be playing DDR". Sometimes she says I need to be working or something, but I generally put my schoolwork first and don't play until it's mostly or completely done. If anything, DDR has helped me with my time management because I have an incentive to do my work more efficiently so I can play DDR.

After trying a song once on beginner, she came to the conclusion that she would never be able to be good at DDR, and that all the steps are just random and are unrelated to the music. E19.gif And she hates it when I spend time on this site. I think she imagines all of you guys as a bunch of shut-in nerds with no lives and no interests other than the stupid arrow game.

So anyway, my mom doesn't like DDR a whole lot, but I don't know why. I don't know if she knows why. All I can do is wonder. And then play DDR after she goes to bed. biggrin.gif E13.gif

I live in a separate home from my parent's home, so they don't seem to be affected too much E1.gif

They don't understand how I sweat so much after such a short period of time. Then they see what I'm actually doing, and seem to understand a bit better laugh.gif

i think my mom thinks my obsession with DDR is very strange. Then i tried to teach her how to play, and she wasnt bad, but when i got Stepmania it was a whole different story. she gets all mad when i play stepmania for like an hour straight, or when i go to the mall to go play ddr and spend like $20. and i have no clue what my dad thinks of ddr. he probably feels the same way.

Now mind you, I have been restricted a lot in my childhood. My parents don't believe in game systems; if I have the computer, then that's enough. And downloading Stepmania and getting a soft pad hooked up to the computer is out of the question. My parents have these parental controls on my screename that tell them about every place I go, including what I download. So if they even SEE the word "DOWNLOAD" I get grounded for a month... and I am NOT kidding when I say that...

Hey i used to have one of those! You wont have much fun like that.
I had a deep hatred for those parental control programs. Until i found out the password (not that i need it anymore) E1.gif
My parents dont mind DDR. They wont try it but they let me do my thing.

My parents are the same as air b!'s. Oh and by the way air b!, would like like a Classic Poop, Diet Poop, Cherry Poop, or Salty Lemonade? God I love ZIM!!

My parents really don't care. It's something I like to do, so they don't care. They do think I play it a little too much when I'm at the arcade E7.gif E4.gif but at least they arn't restricting.
