Will Stepmania X be compatible with the XBOX 360? On toysrus.com one of the customer reviews said MAYBE the 360 harddrive wold be able to store windows software so there would be no need for stepmaniax.

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum if it is plz tell me and ill move it

Im sure somebody will eventually get it modded correctly, its too soon to tell whats going to happen with it, and when.

I've recently gotten a modded xbox, and im working on a "Stepmania X" theme! Don't expect to hear anything about it for a while.

I hope for a release of SM4 on the xbox, and one for the 360, when it comes around. Hopefully xPort will do some modding on the 360!

Bottom line, its WAY to early to tell. Don't expect anything til summer 2006. (estimate)

Xport doesn't tend to cover running projects. In other words, while he might port an emulator (or in this case, a simulator), he's not likely to continue maintaining it as a port. He's...kinda got his own way of doing things, and is dead-set in it.

That said, no, Stepmania (neither the Xport nor the official builds) will not run on the 360 in its current form. They're not even using x86 architecture, for crying out loud.

And about the person that posted that the Xbox 360 would run Windows software...well, he's obviously not the brightest crayon in the box (Hint: It *won't*).

At any rate, why does it matter? The Xbox can run Stepmania reasonably well. Why not just use your Xbox 360 for Xbox games, and devote your Xbox to Stepmania, if you're that serious about it?

I'm sure if it was sold for profit, Konami would clamp down on it (I'm sure it's a matter of time before they clamp down on ITG).[/quote]

Well there is a good chance of the xbox 360 being able to run Mac OS X, so you might be able to run it through there. But don't by any means expect this to be working the first day it comes out or even a year after it comes out.

Incorrect sir. The 360 uses the same DirectX api that the original Xbox does, just with added commands. IF done correctly the Xbox 360 SHOULD run ALL software for the Xbox BBU (Big Black n' Ugly) That includes the homebrew software.

On the running windows bit: Qemu runs on the Power PC platform, on 2 different operating systems on the PPC platform. Theoreticaly you could run Windows under that.

Arcitecture in this case doesnt mean ANYTHING. Microsoft is providing backwards compatiblity with a compatiblity layer, similar to WINE on linux (or Cedega for DirectX applications)
They said all official xbox software will run. StepmaniaX doesnt exactly go and fark around with the stuff that makes the Xbox tick like the Linux OS's do.

StepmaniaX actually stands a good chance of running on the 360 as is. Really.

Either way it doesnt matter. Xport wont port it again, I dont even think hes still on the Dev Team. Cybik, TvStatic and myself maintain the Xbox port now. the last 2 youve seen were us.

I particularly enjoy this thread! With Dikatze's insight, I beleive this could be a helpful thread for people that are ALSO wondering about the Xbox 360 running SM in the future!

fiest off, it's DieKatze, and if they do figure out how to run it on xbox, it's likely that there will be a thread for it when it come out (highly unlikely that this thread will live that long, especially if it's original poster wants it locked)

but yes, point is, don't think about a 360 running SM in the future, wait until we can run any homebrew at all before thinking about running SM off a 360 (which probably will be immenent, but then again, M$ 'claims' to have high security on the internals of the 360)

It's not a full-blown HAL though - WINE is a very apt comparison because WINE only supports the function calls that they make wrappers for. It's not like a full-blown emulator.

Architecture matters in terms of the notion of running code natively on the console - I was taking the OP's post to indicate that Windows would run it natively, which, as we know, is a complete and utter crock.

No - they said "popular Xbox software will run". It's not going to run everything out of the box. In fact, AFAIK, it won't run *any* legacy apps out of the box - you have to have Live to download the compatibility modules.

That reason by itself is likely going to be enough to prevent Stepmania from running - it looks to me like they'll only allow you to run apps with pre-specified GUIDs, because they wouldn't want you to run something unsupported that ends up acting in an unexpected manner and borking the console.

Hey, you've got a point there! Maybe this will help out other people asking the same question!

By the way why did everyone start putting rightsel.gif leftsel.gif next to their screen name? kamron_1, cutriss, spike, pgdeft, and many others did this.

Sorry. I just looked up the latest news on compatiblity with the 360. you are correct there. but almost gaurnteed much of the API is there and will be reuseable.

Its microsoft, they arent going to just abandon directX. Besides, theyve already proven that their Controllers will be DirectInput compatible (Stated fact: the USB version of the controller will be fully compatible with Microsoft Windows). so youre already talking about something that could just be a recompile.

The 360 probably features a very very DirectX Like api, just like the Xbox did. besides, Stepmania supports Drivers. The reason that all the versions for the different operating systems are compatible with eachother isnt because someone can port real well, its because somebody (Chris Danford and Glenn Maynard) thought ahead and wrote a really object oriented application that can use a different system driver if nessicary. The current Xbox driver is actually not the same as the Windows one because you do have to define some things with the Xbox that are seperate from the Windows version. It all depends on how different the 360 api is from the BBU api. The differences probably arent that much considering the compatiblity layers they are going to offer. However, Whos to say we cant hack one of those. Theoreticaly we could just get our hands on a compatiblity layer for a game that used litteraly every feature of the original Xbox, and point it at stepmania.xbe. That could theoreticaly fix the problem.

We wont know until someone sucessfully mods one.

Edit: People. Spell my name correctly.
