Hi! Some of my friend's suggested to me that I write about DDR for a 500 word college application essay. Should I? I'm sure I could do the topic justice, I just want to know if its something colleges would really...appreciate. Advice please!!! E19.gif

It might be unique, which is what colleges want. I'd say only use DDR as a springboard to actually talk about yourself. Also, only do it if you're already a very good writer. If you're only mediocre, it'll probably get worse. Or, just go to a college that doesn't require an essay (a winnar is me).

Go for it. As long as you word it right and add in the details to this game to really entice your audience, then dive right in.

Good luck E1.gif

To those who are suggesting this is a good idea: the purpose of a college application essay is to demonstrate to the admissions board that the applicant possesses qualities that would make them an asset to the school. Professing an obsession to a videogame isn't likely to do that. Think of it as a job interview. Is this the kind of thing you'd stress to the recruiter?

College teachers don't want to hear about DDR. I don;t even think 500 words will explain DDR

Depends... if you're showing them your writing skills, then if you can make it creative enough, sure. Who knows, I, for one, would be impressed if you like wrote about DDR and made it interesting enough for like anyone to read.

But if you're just telling them about yourself, then you should probably avoid it...

It depends on what you're going to say about DDR. Be sure to emphasize the exercise and coordination involved, so it doesn't sound like you're just going on about some video game. E13.gif

Uh...You could do an essay on the practical uses of Video Games in society and include DDR as a game that gets people in shape. I had to write an essay for IB (EVIL Advanced placement thingey in high school...), and i chose that topic. Came out good

You're trying to sell yourself as a good student. Use DDR only as a minor introduction to put yourself into a good light, unless the topic is something totally irrelevent. If they give you a question, 'What does education mean to you?' don't answer that with DDR.

I think that would be a great essay topic. It would be unique and original, and a lot of people would appreciate your work.

Unfortunately, none of these people work on any college admission board.

For the record I would just like to say thank you for all your responses. The essay may be on any topic and it is recommended that it be unique to stand out to the admissions people from the rest of the essays. I was thinking about discussing how DDR works (aka what it is, how you play, etc.) but mostly focus on how it has helped me become motivated, dedicated, and healthy. Sound good or no? o0

There's "unique" in a good way, and "unique" in a bad way. I'm sure if you wrote an essay about how you like to look at pictures of little boys in their underwear, that'd really make your essay stand out from the others as well, but that sure doesn't mean it's a good idea.

A college admissions board does NOT want to hear that your "motivation" and "dedication" is focused towards a videogame...
