DDR and High School Sports

Hi. I am a junior in high school who has always had an inerest in sports, but only now have I started working out and becoming physically active. Due to the fact that I was obese when I was younger, my athletic skills are virtually non-existent. Recently, I made the wrestling team in my school, and have plans to try out for the football team in my senior year. I heard that DDR can benefit you athletically, so now, I have these questions:

1) Is DDR a suitable replacement for cardio exercises?

2) Does DDR improve your footwork (and does it improve it for other sports, such as football).

3) Can DDR improve athletic skills in general?

I plan on buying the game for my PS2, but need to see if it is a good investment first. Thanks for your help E1.gif.

if your getting the ps2 anyway, ddr is a cheap investment, and if you enjoy it, its a good idea. as for exercise, i think it can improve everything you mentioned, as long as your challenging yourself. the better you get, the more youll benefit.

1)-I don't know if it's a suitable replacement, but, certainly, it's def. good for your cardiovascular health.
2)-It improves your foot-eye coordination, I don't know about foot movement.
3)-It also depends on what you consider athletic skill. I play high school soccer/lacrosse, and I've found that DDR has helped a considerable amount in terms of my stamina and the muscle tone in my legs.

So, in conclusion:
-Builds Stamina
-Stronger Legs
-Eye-Foot Cordination

heres a question, what exercise doesnt help you physicaly? of course it will help you get fitter, and if you want a cheaper investment just to an arcade, 50 cents sure beets fifty bucks. E7.gif

Ok, so basically everyone here agrees that it is a form of exercise. However, will DDR make me a better athlete? The reason I ask this is because even though I'm quite fit, I'm rather bad at sports (getting better though), and would like to improve as much as I can. Thanks.

well it helps your balance, stamina, all that stuff, but if your planning it to make you good at like basketball or soccer dont get your hopes up ese it aint go happen.

I do agree that DDR is a form of exercise. But to become a better athlete in a certain sport, you have to work on being better in the sport, and you do that by playing the sport.

DDR can help to a point, but it's probably not going to help you improve your shooting percentage from 17-feet out or help you improve your ability to catch over the shoulder passes.

if you are new to ddr it prolly wont help you get into shape. But if you keep it up you can get into shape. i played all last winter and it definetly improved my footskills, i play tennis for my school.

If there is anything DDR does the most, it would be cardiovascular exercise. It's nowhere near the best alternative, however, but if you can have fun with what DDR has to offer, you got it made.

Yes, to a certain degree. Probably not much, however. Usually when players first start DDR, they won't get any long-term benefit that could be put to use in athletics.
If you expect to get any footwork improvement for other sports, you would have to be playing Heavy songs that make you do crossovers, at maybe 8 or 9 difficulty. Foot transfer to the arrows are just too short, and convenient of a distance to have a long lasting effect in other sports. Crossovers make you move your leg across your body, so that may help a little after doing it long-term.

Yes. DDR can help in endurance, judging by how much you exert yourself when you play, and endurance plays a part in the basics of doing many things in athletics. If you can handle 10 footers and most of the 9s, then chances are pretty high that you're getting something out of DDR.

So basically, DDR can help in all those things. Except for cardio exercise, DDR can't potentially help very much (IMO), since it doesn't require nearly as much over-the-top body movement, but it can still help.

dont think by playing the game for a week is going to make u better.. u need to be on at least like 8 foot settings for it to do any real work.. 9 and 10.. u betcha

1) yes: anything that caueses your heart to constantly work at an above normal pace is considered cardiovascular exercise. playing for 20 minustes without a break is the equivilant of just about any other activity (except swiiming and running)

2) i have to say no. each sport has its own system of footwork (I am a fencer so footwork is what i do), so playing ddr will only help your footwork in ddr. period.

3) in general? sure. the big benefit from ddr is the increased stamina. but that's about as far as it goes. it does not build muscle mass in the legs, except for small amounts of "fast response" tissue in the ankles and hamstrings, caused by the constant impact of stepping and toe pushing.

Dude, when i was playing at a movie theater i was playing super star and this football coach came up to me and told me if i played football, * i said no* and hes saying with those fast movements and *jogging in place* is perfect for football. Then the coach and his assistante start observing me and whispering to each other, i was scared erm.gif ...But since a football coach told me this i think it does improve your footwork.BTW, im to lazy to play football i dont think its fun, but i do play ddr and its fun riiight.gif

i still think it wont help you at other sports, it could get your upper leg muscles stronger, but thats only when you get into nine and ten footers up.gif . If you get good at freestyle THATS good exercise.

I hate drummania, its a insult to drummers such as myself. And you should have said Danny Carey or Terrio Bozzio, the gods of drumming....IMO.

well, being a fooball player, and a ddr player (I start Varsity center for my school) i have a litt experience in both worlds. DDR definitely helps with sports but its what you play depends how ddr helps you. if you are a line backer you need to move laterally --well thats where doubles can help you with. but if you are a lineman than DDR helps with foot placement and foot speed. my coaches all said this year i had improved greatly in my movement and speed b/c im rather big so ddr helped. but to answer your questions

1) no ddr is not a replacement for cardio excersise but if you do both then it helps with running and stamina as well as coordination

2) DDr helps with foot work but like i said above it depends how you train for your sport

3) well DDR only helps so much with athletics so id have to say no on this one ddr never helped me wih catching punting whatever but train on your skill and you will do great. Good luck on making the football team

With DDR I personally have at least doubled my endurance, gained 20%-35% added running speed, and became much more agile (that includes footwork), which all adds up to a nice little package. thumb.gif

well at my school on days we work the lower body we do these things called "dots." this is a mat that is roughly the size of a ddr mad but has the step patturn of lets say "In The Grove" like the side of a die that has 5 dots on it. we do a bounch of foot work on it and i think DDR in the end would just be the expencive alternative.
