I am trying to get my DWI files on beat, but cannot figure it out. I have done some programming and if typing it in notepad is easier let me know how. I'm just not sure where to start in notepad - like how to listen to the beat and stuff.

I've been using XStep to make my DWI's but it isn't working too well.

It will be on beat exactly at some parts, but others it is not.

I'll be honest, I have no personal experience with making stepfiles, but here's what I've heard:

(1) It's possible that the music you're using isn't perfectly even throughout. If this is your first song, you may want to consider finding a computer-generated piece first so you know the BPM.
(2) Dancing Monkeys (it's on the forum) is pretty good at automatically determining BPM and GAP for you.
(3) To count beats, if you're a musician, grab a metronome and try to get the clicks to match the basic rhythm of the song.
(4) Once you have an idea of the BPM, set the GAP so that the very first arrow matches exactly.
(5) Now, watch very carefully to see whether arrows slowly lag behind the music or speed ahead. Then adjust the BPM slightly. (You'll need to change the GAP as well.)

please link me to DANCING MONKEYS

also ... i'm a former club DJ and know quite a bit about BPM and matching things according to BPM.

plus all the songs i use are electronica - which means they have a constant BPM.

i'm pretty sure i have the BPM down --- i don't know what the GAP is though.

Gap: basically the time between when the music starts and when the actual steps start. (if you've ever gone into edit mode in ddr, you'll notice that on most songs, there is a beginning bit where you can't enter any steps)

if you're saying it's on beat some parts, and others it's off, then most likely you're at a close, but not exact tempo, so the beats become misaligned the more the song progresses. Easiest thing to do is to get a metranome or try dancing monkeys

thanks for the reply - and i also LOVE the sig.

anyway- now the gap thing makes PERFECT sense. i thought the GAP was the time inbetween when the track started and when the music started. basically the 2-5ms that appear in an MP3 track at the start.

can't wait to get home and mess around with this.

Quoted for emphasis. This is an issue that even skilled stepchart writers have to wrestle with because it can appear for quite awhile like you are perfectly on beat, and ever so slowly move away from the basic tempo.

well as long as you have the dwi file already create/synced, just go to the SM editor and edit there
