You have some great advice. However, it's not reading it I'm having trouble with, I just get all mixed up in the streams, then I get screwed and fail.
Any Ideas On keeping track of the long streams?
Thank you

just keep practicing songs with long streams, and you'll eventually learn to read the distinct patterns subconciously. That's all you can really do. Just experment around a lot with doing different things and styles, and don't be afraid to slow down the music speed at first if things are too intense for you. |

I made a MAX 300 file... my first one. It's in ONI mode, made from scratch. Try it and please give me CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. Does something seem off? Does it not fit? I'd appreciate the feedback. No official stuff was included in here, JUST the simfile.
YouSendIt link
RapidShare link
I'm sorry for using these sites for such a small file but I have nowhere else to put it. |

Yeah, and what ISN'T DEAD, SUCKS! It takes 6 freakin' minutes to download ONE SIMFILE off of ddrlover. SIX, FREAKIN, MINUTES FOR GOODNESS SAKE! Everything else has a nice little 404, or simfiles that aren't really good. Someone has changed my opinion on BemaniStyle and now since I was given a "Talk" about the goodness of bemanistyle, I CAN'T WAIT FOR ITS RETURN!
oh and btw: Does anybody have some ZiGZaG stuff (it's one of K-Ward's aliases i think). Stuff like VerTex, VerTex^2, Pandamonium, or Energizer.
Also about bemanistyle once again:
PLEASE COME BACK BEMANISTYLE, YOU'RE OUR ONLY HOPE OF NOT GETTING One of These OR VIRUSES, OR SLOW DOWNLOADS!
Thanks

You think six minutes for one song is BAD? Talk about spoiled...
Anyway, ZiGZaG isn't one of Kyle Ward's aliases, amazingly enough. Can't tell you where to get anything, though. _________________

This needs to be in the Stepmania bug, fix, blah blah blah thread. But...I feel like being nice so:
Quote: | After you download a song, click open on the download. You will then see a folder that has the name of the song that you downloaded. Now under start go to all programs and find the stepmania file. Under stepmania there will be a file that says 'Open Stepmania Program folder'. Click this. You will then be taken to a file that contains alot of folders. Click on the folder that says 'Songs'. Within this folder, create a NEW folder to put your song in. You can make groups like "Konami Originals", "Fan made", etc. Once you create this new folder, drag the song into this folder. And Vwala, your song is playable. |

Complete and total hyperbole.
You can get simfiles of every DDR song, ever, on DDRUK's IRC channel or through their BitTorrent tracker.
Stop trying to find things on websites. Websites suck for distributing large files to large numbers of people. Hosting large files on websites costs way too much money, and thus the websites get shut down quickly. Also, websites are very public, and simfiles are illegal (even the ones on Bemanistyle, except for the tiny minority where the copyright holder of the music has given permission for the MP3 to be redistributed), which is a bad combination. If you have any experience at all looking for and downloading illegal material, you'll know that websites (especially publically-accessible ones that can be easily found) usually turn out to be one of the worst and least reliable mediums for finding what you're looking for.
If you have an attitude of "if it's not on a publically-accessible website, it doesn't exist", then you deserve not to find anything. The World Wide Web is not the entirity of the Internet, merely the most public surface, and if you are stubborn and refuse to dig deeper then of course you're not going to find very much of substance.
These are the stats on my simfile collection according to the SMStats program:
Found 7572 songs in 268 groups
DWI: 4969
SM: 2201
KSF: 264
BMS: 138
Total size of directories: 19498MB = ~19GB
These simfiles were gathered over the past six months. They include all the officials from DDR, PIU, and ITG, along with a lot of typical fan-made stuff like you'd find on Bemanistyle.
Almost everything I have could still be downloaded today.
Fewer than half the simfiles (probably only about a third) were downloaded from websites.
None came directly from Bemanistyle, DDRLover, or any of the other "big name" sites mentioned in this thread. Many probably came from Bemanistyle originally, but that's not really any of my business.
Simfile collection is piracy, and in order to be a good gatherer of simfiles, you have to think like and act like a pirate. You can't just expect all the world's illegal data to be handed to you on a silver platter. That's not how it works. That's never how it's worked, and it will never work like that.
Anything worth doing takes a little bit of work in order to do right. But work smarter, not harder. That's all I'll say.
Just as a reminder, I started collecting simfiles back when people just like you were saying "oh, it's impossible to get simfiles anymore; all the sites are down". I had not a single simfile at the time, but I ignored the naysayers and went ahead downloading. DDRUK's IRC channel was a damn goldmine; I probably got close to half my stuff there. And now, after six months of simfile collection, with almost 20GB of stuff to show for it, people are still saying "oh, it's impossible to get simfiles anymore; all the sites are down". I guess people have always been saying that and always will be. _________________

Wait, PedanticOmbudsman,
Quote: | ...simfiles are illegal (even the ones on Bemanistyle, ...) |
How about only dealing with *frre-of-charge* fan-made steps, banners,
lyrics, movies, BGanimations, etc. but excluding MP3s? Wouldn't that
be legal?
And btw, can DDRFreak host such goings-on?
BTW2, what is the difference between .sm files and simfiles? |

Technically it's illegal for anyone under the age of 13 to be on one of these sites, but does anyone care? No.
Anyways, here's edits of Reincarnation, Summer, G2, Classic 4, and Explosive, all in DWI format. Files and graphics made by me.

Yes, a simfile with no music file included and with custom-made artwork and custom-made is legal. But without the MP3, it's kind of useless -- if you download just the steps & then try to supply the MP3 yourself, such as by ripping it from a CD, it'll likely be out-of-sync, because the MP3 you rip from your CD probably won't have exactly the same amount of silence at the start of the file as the MP3 that the stepfile author originally used to sync the steps. One MP3 encoder might produce an MP3 with 12ms more silence at the start of the file than another MP3 encoder does with the same song, which will throw you off quite a bit. You can re-sync the steps to match your MP3, but it's a lot easier for everybody to just use one standardized MP3.
But my point wasn't really about whether simfiles are legal or not, it's that the techniques required in order to be an effective simfile collector are the same techniques required in order to be an effectve collector of illegal software. The actual legal status of simfiles is not relevant to the fact that you'll have he most success obtaining simfiles by acting and thinking like a software pirate or "warez d00d". If you expect everything to be easily and quickly downloadable from a public website that stays up forever, it's not going to happen. Warez doesn't work that way and large-scale simfile distribution doesn't work that way -- not really because of the legality, but moreso because of the bandwidth difficulties associated with getting large amounts of data to large numbers of people. Peer-to-peer (P2P) technology is a much more efficient and reliable way to distribute large files, because it decentralizes the process and encourages those downloading the files to share with others instead of just leeching bandwidth without giving anything back.
Quote: | BTW2, what is the difference between .sm files and simfiles? |
Well, different people use the terms different ways, which can lead to some confusion, but these are the definitions I use:
Stepfile -- a .dwi or .sm file (or some other more obscure format, but let's keep this simple) containing steps for a song, as well as other data that the simulator can understand, such as title/artist, difficulties, instructions on what music file and banner/background to use, etc.
Simfile -- a stepfile plus the associated files it's distributed with that are required to use it, including the music file, the optional banner/background/bgmovies, etc. Generally distributed as a package in .zip, .rar, or .smzip format. _________________
