Also, it maybe rude, but it is certainly not wrong. If you think this is better than the stepmania editor, you are just stupid, sorry.

Stependous isn't meant to be a replacement for the SM editor, as I thought I made clear earlier. They do different things. I've explained that if you are creating a brand new stepfile for a brand new song, the SM editor is not the right tool for the job. If all you want to do is continue making different steps for the same-old songs then sure, the SM editor is certainly useful. Personally, I'm tired of the same-old songs which is why I made this utility. It facilitate the quick creation of new stepfiles for new songs. It is also, in my opinion, easier to use for newbies. I would like to see a lot more stepfiles created - which would require a tool that makes it easy for new people to get rolling. I hope this is such a tool.

Also, if you're going to continue to argue this point, it would be helpful if you would address the issues instead of just making blanket statements without any evidentiary explanations. That would require you to actually try the program with an open mind, however, which seems like something you are unwilling or unable to do.

That's pretty good that you made some more progress. I wonder if you plan to implement other types of arrows like 1/16th's, 1/32nd's, and freeze arrows, since that would allow for more robust step files. Also, do you plan in the near future on overhauling the layout of the arrow editing area so that they are a little bigger and that it has a little more detail with regards to the way each measure is displayed (in other words, adding little sub-lines in between the measure lines so that it indicates what kind of arrow can go there). Also, another cool suggestion is to accomodate songs with BPM shifts. But so far, everything's looking good and I wish you the best of luck making it better.

Or you could use this for everything except steps and then use the SM editor.

Yes, I've been considering adding freeze arrows and narrower arrow increments. If the amount of work required to do so wasn't so large, I would have included them before the first public release. Freeze arrows are probably at the top of the list since that is something that even beginners will probably want. Thanks for your comments. E1.gif

Please give me the exact error message you're receiving. Everything is statically linked so I don't quite know what the problem could be. Are you running the pre-built executable or are you trying to compile it yourself from the source?

Hi SvenC. I'm new to StepMania. What intrigues me most about the program is being able to create my own dance steps. Stepmania's editor is really hard to use so I'm happy to try Stependous.

I'm a musical person and a former disc jockey so I understand music theory and more importantly, beats per minute, but I don't know how to fine tune the BPM/Gap settings inside the Stependous interface.

Can you offer a more specific tutorial? I've tried this:

Quote:
2) Open a song file on your computer. The BPM will automatically be calculated. Adjust the BPM and Gap using the controls and use the media player slider bar to test.

but don't understand why the music jumps when I press a key.

Sorry for the newbie question. I hope someone can help.

SvenC, disregard my first post. The BMP counter is accurate and I figured out how to control the gap using the up and down buttons.

Can you share with the rest of us? I still don't see how to activate the automatic BPM calculator.

Sure.

Open Stependous.

File\Open Music File

(Stependous calculates the BPM automatically)

BPM is displayed in the large window--upper left and in the small grey BPM window in the middle left.

Look at the small grey Gap window in the middle of the screen

Press the tiny up and down arrows in that window to adjust gap.

Hmm. The music starts playing as soon as I open it, but the large BPM display shows 000.

Tapping keys to calculate BPM doesn't work very well either - each time I press a key, it causes the music to skip slightly, so I can't keep tempo at all.

Similar problems when I try and adjust the gap. I set the BPM manually, then adjust the gap until it lines up nicely. To double-check, I press "Gap Plus HalfBeat", notice it's now off, so press "Gap Minus HalfBeat". It should be back the way it was (nicely aligned), but is still quite off. It seems like it's not tracking the start of the music or the current play position very well (or at all, for that matter).
