Data Marine, huh? Well I'm an Admin pogue, also in the Marines, working in a climate controlled office. I find it good to know that you can still find the time to play Bemani while in a combat zone. Do all the other Marines give you any crap for carrying those IIDX controllers around? If not, try showing them a PoMu controller!

Anyways, watch your buttocks out there. Remember, the enemy could show up when you least expect it. Also, I'm thinking about getting into Beatmania before the US version (finally!) comes out here. Which one should a n00b like me start with?

I think you should get 9th style, as I have heard that there are alot of ddr songs in there. After that you should get 6th style and 7th.

I already went ahead and bought 6th style and the controller from ebay for $62.99 and $86.00 respectively, a good deal consdering prices everywhere else. I bought it cause I head it has a beginners mode. Last time I played it was at a con and in Okinawa before that and that's where I found out I suck big time!!! I wanna get great like these other guys in a months time.

I'm glad that I'm not the only Marine with a interest in Bemani. Some of the other Marines are usually like what the hell is that controller but don't really mess with me much after they see the game in action, espically when I play Bit Mania 7K or Alien World 7K.

The E-Bay purchase was a pretty good deal. I ended up getting 6th - 9th styles and my controller through Play Asia. (which I'm not going to link cause they already get enough advertising) All the newer styles have beginner's mode, but 6th style has Drill Mode which does help ease the learning curve a little bit. Personally I think 8th style is probably the best way to jump in for the Japanese series. However, 9th style is the best way to lead into the US version since the US release will be using 9th style's high res graphic style.

I don't know if I will get the US version of Beatmania though as currently it's slated to only have 50 songs whereas 6th style had 69 songs, 7th and 8th both had 90 songs, and 9th had 87 songs. Also the fact that they changed the 5 key position and some songs won't be 7 keys doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

Personally, given how far I've gotten in the game I'm thinking about getting a Desktop Arcade IIDX controller when I do return to stateside cause I don't like how the keys like to stick on the KOC.
