Okay, so I'm playing ITG home today, on Event mode. Two times during my playing, my mom calls, so I hold down start to fail the song so I can start over when we're done talking. The first phone call, I auto-fail, and it returns me to the song select screen. The second call, I hold down start to auto-fail, and I get the "Life Depleted" message, as if I'd failed under normal conditions.
So, what's causing the conflicting messages?

You autofail after 30 consecutive misses. You must not have hit the start button in time to back out before you got 30 misses. _________________

If I recall correctly, if your life meter was depleted before auto failing, you will get the Life Depleted message. |

Nope. You get the Life Depleted message (and get kicked back to the title screen) if your miss combo hits 30 before you back out. Since giving up takes so long, and hitting any arrows while holding the start button cancels it, it's sometimes necessary to hit an arrow right before pressing the start button to reset the miss count. This can be rather difficult in places like the end run in Delirium... It's possible, but you have to start holding start IMMEDIATELY after hitting an arrow. |
