Yeh I noticed it the first time I heard the song on the In the Groove website. You shouldn't be bothered by it though, many popular pop stars borrow melodies for their songs. I remember Jessica Simpson did that a few years ago but a lot of people didn't recognize the melody so nobody noticed that it was already in another song. |

Yeah, she did...it was an Eagles song (Lyin' Eyes, maybe?), but I can't remember which one....if I heard her song I'd pick it out again. The first time I heard that, I flipped, because I'm a big Eagles fan.
It does bother me quite a bit, I feel the original artists deserve credit for their composures, and it strikes me as if the artists that do borrow the melodies lack the creativity to make their own. A good example of this is the infamous case involving (forgot his name) and his song "Ice Ice Baby", which ripped the melody from Queen's "Under Pressure", but when they filed a case, he won for some terribly miniscule reason.

Hmm, that Jessica Simpson song ripped off an Eagles song? I thought the original was John Mellencamp's "Jack and Diane", but heck, for all I know maybe he borrowed that melody as well. I knew the minute I heard the Jessica Simpson version that the melody wasn't original, though.
Anywho, Vanilla Ice won the fight over "Under Pressure" and "Ice Ice Baby"? Wow, I didn't know that. I kind of assumed he lost, because it certainly seemed like that was the end of his career as a rapper at that point. Another example of this kind of borrowing happened with Rick James' Superfreak. MC Hammer took that song and copied it pretty much exactly (or sampled it, if you prefer) for "U Can't Touch This" back in 1990 without permission, but I can't find anything that says James went after Hammer for this. With or without permission, that kind of sampling is really common in hip-hop, though. The first Hip Hop song to really achieve widescale success, The Sugar Hill Gang's "Rapper's Delight", samples Chic's disco hit, "Good Times", for example. Another example I've heard of, but don't really see myself, is that the Ghostbusters theme by Ray Parker, Jr. rips off Huey Lewis and the News' "I Want a New Drug". Lewis did sue Parker for this one, and they settled out of court IIRC. |
