After having played DDR for 1.5 years i've been pretty hooked on it and i'm sure you have too.
Ever since ITG came out there have been numerous amounts of people turning their focus towards ITG and forgetting about DDR because it's not as "challenging" (which, i kinda agree on).
So, my question is: Do you feel that with ITG being out, DDR will begin to fade and DDR players will begin to decrease? _________________

Probably will, seeing as almost everyone is going to be playing ITG rather than DDR. (`Sept for me. I just killed myself to buy a PS2 and 4 versions of the game .. with a memory card.... with 2 mats just to play DDR at home! I'm not going to be playing ITG too soon. )
But then...you know. Like eevvverything else out there. If you're 'loyal' to DDR, you should stay that way. Because it'll be back. It'lll beeee baccck. XD you know, like all of those other older games.
It'll turn into one of those 'old-school' things, and 'old-school' is 'new-school' as soon as it turns... 'old-school'.
Wierd society we live in these days, huh. |

Agreed. It all depends with what you have more fun with. I'll go with DDR on this one but I can see how people get bored easily and go with ITG.Maybe when a new Arcade Mix for DDR comes out then the popularity will skyrocket again. I understand when Max 2 came out it did not get much applause but this is different in a sense that maybe DDR can learn a thing or two from Stepmania as far as revamping the graphics, expanding the songlist, and increasing options.
EDIT:Expanding to the 3/4 step jumps wouldn't hurt either.

I had a chance about 3-4 weeks ago to go up to Marvin's in Ann Arbor to play some ITG (and DDR... but most ITG) and i am, in fact, getting very hooked to this game because it has that extra "spice" factor in it. Basically, when playing DDR, you play mostly with your feet (duh) and can add hand slaps in there for a sense of style or Pizaz, but in ITG, it's more of an "essential" thing to do in some songs (Also see: Queen of Light Expert ).
As you said, also, i think that people will, at first, be intrigued by ITG and soon MANY DDR players will turn over to ITG. After it becomes WAY too popular, if feel that then people will go back to DDR because of the "old school" sense. _________________

I think this is alright prediction, however I believe most would only go back if ITG got boring, which is what is inevitably causing DDRs doom. The Extreme mix has been out for ages, people have played it and mastered it. It lost its freshness a while ago. ITG will probably avoid this by releasing new versions occasionaly to avoid becoming boring. |

I do believe ITG will take over, once more people take notice of it, at least. GO AND PLAY IT DARN YA IZ AWESOME.
I been playing for 10 1/2 months now. I went the first 6 or so on only DDR, and was still quite thoroughly into it - I still had a ways to go on skill. After I hit ITG the first couple of times, DDR seemed like crap to me. I don't find the songlist of really difficult songs to be that satisfying on DDR; I like the variety that ITG has, even though it has less songs overall. Really, I rarely take the time to go play DDR for free 10 minutes away, yet about every week or so I drive an hour to spend like $10 on ITG.
Most people that have told me they don't like ITG and DDR ownz it haven't even played ITG. A kid walked up to the machine in Vegas while I was there "Where's the Extreme? This looks like some cheesey buttocks American version." Told him all about how difficult but fun it is, and at the part about the mines and hands, he said "That's gay" and left. Didn't even try.
edit: hehe...cheesey buttocks

I gotta admit, I dont like mines and hands(Hands are actually fun if you try to do them with your feet. Four freezes at once? I can do that =D), but that shouldnt be a reason for someone to not give it a chance. I mean, you can even turn the things off. = / |

=D I probably just sound stubborn, but I dun` wanna try. O-o;;
Just kidding. I mean.. I would try..and I WILL try eventually. But not after I just spent 200 bucks on dance dance revolution. ITG can wait. It can't be all THAT great.
(ooh a rhyme! I made a funny.) |

I think that there are more sucky ddr players than there are good players, and most of the good players will play ITG, and the sucky players wont because they think its too hard, so I think ddr will always be more popular as long as there are sucky players. |

I think newbies will play DDR first because it's the more prominant of the two. But as they get bored with it, they will switch to ITG. DDR is the gateway drug to ITG. _________________

ITG has the potential to surpass DDR, I think, but I see there being a hurdle or two for it to overcome. The first one, which mtwieg mentioned, is how widespread ITG becomes. I don't know how much the Roxor's Boxor conversion kit cost, but I'm guessing it's a fraction of what it costs to buy a new ITG2 machine. The Boxor, however, is what got them in trouble with Konami so Roxor might have to find some other way to make their game affordable. Since Andamiro makes the cabinets, maybe they could make some kind of conversion kit for Pump It Up machines (an older PIU machine can be had for the relatively low price of about $2000 plus shipping). Admittedly, that would be difficult considering the differences between the cabinets. I don't know how hard it would be to change that, either.
The other, and maybe this isn't a factor as I have yet to take a look at an ITG arcade machine, is possibly intimidation. ITG has a very wide range of difficulty so I don't see anyone having a problem finding a song they can play and enjoy. The problem is that someone who's never tried ITG before might go to an arcade only to see someone doing Pandemonium Expert. and just go "WTF? Screw that! I'll never be that good." I'm just going by my experience, though. When I first saw someone doing a 9-footer on DDR, I thought something similar. I could be wrong on this. Maybe it never happens.
There's also the problem of perception as FujiFlame mentioned. I used to know of a lot of people who wouldn't even touch PIU because it was, to them, nothing more than a cheap, gimmicky knockoff. Heck, there are still some around on this board. It strikes me as very odd that someone who's open-minded enough to try DDR would think like that. I suspect, however, that will change as more people get bored of Extreme and more arcades get ITG, however gradually that may happen. |
