I disagree with the lot of you.

What one complaint do many teenagers have with the DDR games?
The crappy music selection.

Now, we here at DDR Freak may love or J-Pop and Euro techno. Hell, we even play rubbish like the terrible-sounding Max and Paranoia mixes without a qualm. But the kids that still want to play DDR just for quick fun don't like what Konami has to offer.

I think DDR simulators like Stepmania do so well because DDR players love to hear decent music when they play for a change. And you can bet that many teens will see the appeal of playing a fun, simple dancing game to some of their favorite and legitimately popular songs.

The mechanics of the game will probably suck, especially in comparison to DDR and ITG. But that simply won't matter to MTV's market.

A very boastful statement, but interesting nonetheless. The MTV Music Generator games were a decent use of the license, but as it has been said, nothing too spectacular. They've got a lot of money to throw around, so there is potential, if they'd team up with the right names in the music game business. Just as long as I don't see pop up videos on DDR EX2, that is.

I agree, you would be embarrased to play most DDR music to someone in your workplace, at school etc.

I like Pump/EZ 2 Dancer as they have/had mainstream Korean songs that are actually half decent, dancable tunes (IMO). Now of course the rest of the world would probably think otherwise and thats why with MTV putting in mainstream Western pop/rap/dance it would attract a load of players who previously thought DDR/PIU was retarded.

The game engine wouldnt mater than much to Joe Public, if he could shake his buttocks to some club songs...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Explain the various versions of DDR out for PS2 and the entry into the Xbox platform, not to mention the announcement of beatmania.

ummm....what about Andamiro? I would say they have done a good job and they didn't really copy what they did since they entered the market at the same time with different products. And they have definitely kept the dancing game genre alive in some areas, if not dominating in others (see countries outside the US like Mexico and other south american countries).

That being said, I am very apprehensive about this. MTV drumscape was a complete failure (in my opinion), but maybe they have learned from it. I agree there is still some untapped market out there, but it is going to be hard to entice new people to the games and keep them playing for more than one iteration or mix.

And even if they do okay, we are now entering the war of the music games......konami, andamiro, roxor, pop'nko (neon fm), and now MTV, not to mention britney's dance beat and all the other horrible knock-offs. It seems like the market might soon be oversaturated.

When will it end?? Perhaps only when Konami puts out of new DDR mix! laugh.gif

Okay everyone, MTV Drumscape freaking rocks! What other game can you just jam out, go hog wild, and have people ask, "How did you get so good?" Just so I can reply, "I'm a famous drummer in 3 bands and I memorized all the notes to these songs. That's right boys and girls, I'm God..."

Well, the attention was nice, but the game sucked... Good music though!

Which is exactly what they would have to do, unless they want to make an interactive game for handbells, or something, since Konami kind of got the dancing thing, the DJ, the guitar, drums, keyboard, etc. Unless MTV has the most aWe50m3lY-l33t** advertisting campaign the world has ever seen, I can't see this catching on well. That being said, they'll have a large enough base of people who will say "ZOMG!!1! MTV DDR, BUT BETTER!1!1!1oneone! TH15 15 T3H C00L357 TH1NG S1N(3 T3H NAPOLAOEN DYNAMTINTEA M00V13!!!11" No doubt MTV will have no trouble convincing their drones to buy the game, regardless of game quality/difficulty/song selection/any other factor that most video game players investigate. I think this will provide something to laugh long and hard at--maybe Konami will even sue MTV, just for fun. E15.gif

**Stupid alphanumeric/capitalized typing used to emphasize the stupidity of MTV and its followers. Advertising to your own fanbase has to be the only way you could sell such garbage as "Napoleon Dynamite" and get a decent box office profit.

There's a Drumscape near me. It's $2.00 to play, and literally 60% of the time, the screen is displaying the typical Windows error message, "This program has performed an illegal operation and must be shut down... blah blah blah." I have not once in my life ever seen anyone play that game. It's only good for providing a place to sit and catch some air conditioning breeze after DDR.

i am one of those that beleive MTV should have their buttocks's patriot act'd.
That company doesnt deserve rights for any of its employes because they continue to demean one of the worlds most magical forms of culture, music.

Any girl on MTV has to be hot, naked, and sweaty or else they dont play the music and dont show the video, so what do you think their games are going to be like? I am guessing its going to be a bunch of girls in thongs in a row bending over and bouncing for a music video background in every song (during which you would press the left and right arrows at the same time over and over)

MTV is more likely to make a sexual intercourse sim than an actualy dance game, and they any also most likely to demean whatever respect ddr freaks get in the arcade.

So it boils down to this

should MTV make a dance game? No.
do you think it will be succesfull? Was that britney spears dancing game
successfull?

Hmm, I'm definitely following the "wait and see" school of thought on this, but with egomaniacal statements like "We don't think the music space has ever really been done well", I'm having a hard time imagining that a good game will come out of this. They say they'll do something different, but what? I'm not saying there are new possibilities out there for music games, I just dunno what they are and I'm not very confident that MTV will be the ones to bring out such new ideas. From reading the article, it sounds to me like dance games could be one of their first efforts. Combining this with what they said about doing something different in music games, and I'm imagining something along the lines of Britney's Dance Beat, which was a pretty big flop. Ah well, like I said, we'll see what happens in the coming months, I suppose.

Do they have what it takes? Quite possibly.

....but they have an uphill battle right now, especially with Amplitude and Beatmania coming around the corner.

Do they have what it takes? Yes, but not for the reasons people have listed here. MTV Networks has a huge following from the prep crowd. Judging on what I've seen from the general group of MTV fans, they'll mindlessly follow and love whatever game they make. Unless, of course, it involves sweating or something else "icky".

I honestly don't think that MTV can do that well, but who knows, they could pull something purty cool out of their butts!

No, no, it's actually not like creating great television. (As if. E15.gif) For one thing, your customers are smarter and pickier in the video game market.

Putting rhythm games aside for a moment, because they did say that they'd consider making games in any genre, MTV is being naive. Yapp actually said: "I think we're bringing a lot of that muscle to the industry that historically has not been there." In order words they think that the video game industry is small, that no one else in the industry has any assets like franchises or cash (haha), and that they'll be able to dominate just because they're MTV. sarc.gif I MEAN DUH!

About MTV Drumscape, here's a riddle for you. Which rhythm arcade game shuts off the monitor just shortly after you choose your song? Hint: it's not technically a game, nor does it require any rhythm!
