IIRC it was something more like:
"Freeze Roll? What is that like an Egg Roll or something? Com'on now."

It was more like 'this thing is the biggest paperweight EVAR!'

I think the rolls are lazy personally.

There are no freeze rolls on only a single arrow.
But...can there be? E10.gif Maybe that's how ITG2 has it set up, but could you do it anyway in an edit?

Turning on Simple will cause most roll pairs to become a single roll (since in most roll pairs, one starts on a quarter and the other starts on a 16th).

Also, when putting them in edits, 4 starts and 3 ends. This is based on what SM4 CVS (which has roll support) does. Oh, and don't test those edits in 3.9, as it does some strange stuff regarding the fact that it doesn't recognize the start, but recognizes the end (I've crashed it once with a file containing rolls...Renaissance).

(EDIT)And for the list of songs that have freeze rolls in them (quite short):

! (Hard, Expert)
July Euromix (Hard, Expert)
Renaissance (Medium, Hard, Expert, Double Hard)
Robotix (Medium, Hard) (I shouldn't have to mention where E10.gif)
Summer (Hard)

This does not take into account hidden Expert charts, except for ! Expert which I've personally seen. As far as I know, the charts belonging to unlockable songs in Marathon mode don't have rolls either.

Renaissance Hard Doubles has rolls? Was the stepchart changed from the Beta version? Because I remember going through the ITG2 listing on Hard and Expert on Doubles and not seeing one single song with rolls in it.

And I've got plans for the rolls in edits... *evil grin* Granted, it's nothing like Antonio's LOL-irium2.0 idea (Roll + quad = WTF?), but it should work nicely. E1.gif

so... are these rolls fun? I don't see how making you shift back and forth, or jump, or whatever, on a roll randomly without having to time it perfectly would be more entertaining than stomping on arrows that go exactly to the music.

Rolls are incredibly fun. I specifically look for songs that have them. The only thing I can think to compare them to is Nintendo's old track game (Track Meet was it?), when you have to run on your power pad as fast as humanly possible before jumping.

mostly due to its lackluster selection of songs, and mediocre stepcharts.

I HATE HATE HATED ITG (for the same reasons) but 2 is like a completely different game and it's actually pretty good in comparison.

Looks like there's a 6th song with rolls: Amore Expert with 2.

They're graded as if they were holds. The steps starting the rolls are graded as normal, from fantastic down to miss. However, the rest of the roll is either "yeah" or "bad" like a normal hold. If you keep stepping fast enough, you get full credit. If you fail to step quickly enough at any point, the roll goes dark and you get no credit for the roll, though you'll still get normal credit for the initial step.

Thus, in terms of grading, two steps with rolls are no more valuable than two steps with holds.
Which is precisely the reason why I dislike them. It irks me having to spend significant quantities of stamina for what amounts to one or two steps' worth of points. As an extreme example - the long roll in Robotix. If I'm playing a marathon course with Robotix in it, I just step off the roll and get some rest time rather than bother with it ... it's just not worth it. And honestly, if you want someone to mimic with a drum roll, why not just use a sixteenth run (or whatever rhythm floats your boat?)

On the other hand they are great for really cheap freestyle... hahaha
