I reccomend this pad. It seems worth it and eveeryone's trying to compete with it, at least CF is.

CF has better customer service and their pads are known to be well made and even have recessed arrows.

RO has sub par customer service and their pards have recessed arrows and are as sensitive as a CF, but you may have trouble with the control box.

The redoctane afterburner has foil under the buttons, which means that the sencitivity can last. I hear the AB buttons how a bounce to then, then the CF has a more arcade button feel, kinda. Not as bouncy. And I hear the controle boxes suck and sooo many people have had problem. CFs don't have any issues. The CF will last you forever, while the afterburner probably won't, seemsing as a lot of reviews always turn up negitive ( reviews on heavy pad use). Earlyer in the thread it says the brackets came off and the sensitivity lets up. Do yourself a favore and buy a CF... it will be the last pad you have to buy. No more wasting money.

I was ready to order an Afterburner until I read this thread. So I sent an email to Red Octane today:

Hi,
I really want to buy an afterburner. But then I read this thread:
http://www.ddrfreak.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=103530

It doesn't trouble me so much that you guys have a problem with the
controllers. What does trouble me is how awful you guys are in treating
people trying to get customer service. This is on probably the premier DDR
website and has probably cost you a lot of business.

I suggest you maybe post to this thread and try to fix things.

I am really bothered by the fact that if you send me a busted pad, I will
have to pay an ADDITIONAL $50 to ship it back to you. It seems about 90% of the people who use the Xbox (like me) had serious problems with the pads.

It's too bad, because I was ready to enter my credit card info onto your
site - just until I read that thread.

Later today, I received this email from them:

Hello,

Thank you for the email. We are very sorry to hear that. The control box issue was resolved long ago and we are currently sending out new control boxes to anyone with a bad one. All pads that go out now should contain a new control box. If the problem occurs again, we are more than willing to send out a replacment free of charge.

As for defective pads, on the rare occation that one appears, we pay for shipping for the customer to get the pad back here and replace it for a brand new one. We are more than willing to stand behind our product for up to 90 days after the initial purchase price.

Thank you,
Service RedOctane

I think I will go ahead and order one tomorrow.

And the cynic in me says, "Look at that, they respond the same day when you want to give them money, but take a week to respond when you need something fixed."

But for all I know, they might have been swamped on the tech support side lately and not quite as much on the sales support.

You can count me among those who were extremely interested in buying 2 afterburners, but bought 2 CF's after reading the thread. I kind of had the same cynical thoughts about getting good support before buying and once you hand over the money you're on your own.

Would have been nice to save $100 per pad over the CFs (plus, they look cooler), but I think I made the right choice. You'd think with a new product release, they would have overstaffed the service department just so all the negative stories would not have happened.

I got a small question. Whats the life expectancy on an Afterburner?

I got my replacement control box (was supposed to be 2 of them, but I think DHL lost 1) and it works fawlessly.
No more disconnect issues. I'm very happy!!

Thanks. I am now calling RO for new control boxes. Good informative posts! Thanks

EDIT: Got the new control box, works great. Props to RedOctane for good customer service and fast shipping. I think I'm the only person they gave good service to! riiight.gif

OK, I got my 2nd cbox yesterday and tried it out...same disconnect problems as before. So I called them. Their only solution at this point is to have the pad returned to them for my choice of a full refund (less shipping, ohoho, I get to pay $64 to "rent" a semiworking product for a couple of weeks) or a replacement (which they will send on their own sweet time). I'm really not satisfied in either case. I've filled out the return form requesting an exchange. I figure this way I'll eventually have a working unit, and if I'm dissatisfied with it still, I'll go ahead and return it for a refund and even though I will be out the shipping cost, they'll be out a lot *more* for the multiple shippings to exchange and return it. Is that petty? You betcha. I disrecommend ordering from them because I have yet to have a positive experience with their CS reps (neutral at best to downright snippy like the guy I got today) and I agree with what has been mentioned a few times in this thread along the lines of "once they have your money..." well, you get the drift. Anyone else have a similar experience?

"Like the arcade" in form, but not necessarily in function. It's highly possible that your Afterburner is far more sensitive and responsive than the arcade pad on which you were playing.

chances are you're also used to the home version timing windows and difficulty settings (most of the extremes here in orlando are set to 6 or 8 for life difficulty...home version is set to 4 I think).

Dead, dead, dead.

No idea about the disconnect problem cause I can't pass any songs with my up arrow out of order.

At least you can still play "Mickey Mouse March(Summertime)" without the Up arrow! E4.gif

I just got my new Cbox and everything works perfectly especially stepmania. I understand that the life of the pad must not be as long as a CF but I believe RO said they will sell replacement parts for it.

After about two months of very heavy play, my 2P down arrow just died. Goddamn. I took off the arrow plate and looked at the foil... three rips. The sensor looked fine. Should I just send my pad back to RO? Or is there something better I can do to save my baby...

Looks like it's already time for somebody to make an Afterburner sheet metal mod.

That didn't take long at all.
