What they told me was that they had a "bad batch" of control boxes. And, it sounds like, the cord that goes from the unit to the CB. I guess the CBs are made in China.
So I don't think it's a design flaw with the unit. It sounds like a manufacturing problem. Anyway, I think they have it all sorted out now, and I'm guessing if you ordered an Afterburner right now you'd get a fully working control box.
I haven't had any sensitivity issues, and my scores went WAY up from the crappy floppy mats I had before. |

I don't belive that line. (The cord bit).
I bought a new cord, you see. I wanted a long cord between pad & the box because I want to be able to push start/select with my hands. I worry that my fat weight on the buttons (which I can't tell the difference between when it's on the floor) would break it, so I'd rather push them. I play DDR MAX! which requires select/start an awful lot.
So I bought a 6' long cord between the control box and the pad. Serial cable. I put the controlbox in front of the TV so I can just reach out and push rather than bend down and push or stomp on the box.
Now I had disconnect issues before I switched cables. And after I switched cables, I continued to have disconnect issues. Plus, a few weeks later, my up arrow died. I switched back to the old cable, but it's still dead. So I don't buy this "it's the cable" one bit, just because I've got a brand new 6' cable from CompUSA and it still has these problems. |

I contacted RO last night. They said they had new controlboxes, and they promised to ship me out a new one within two days.
So hopefully soon I can give you an update on my dead up arrow/disconnect issues.
My XBOX died, but my husband works for a game company that lets him bring home a debug XBOX from time to time, so I can test it out on the debug xbox. At least until my own xbox comes home.
ETA till my own XBOX returns from the shop: 1.5 weeks. |

The only problem I've had is the screws coming loose, which is fixed easily by just tightening the screws. Other than that, 3 weeks and still no problems. Very sexy. A very sexy pad.

Only problem after about a month of strenuous 9 and 10 foot playing is one corner brace came loose and it looks like it's stripped... I'll find some way to fix it.
Other than that, theres a small bit of phantom stepping for me, but i would assume that it's my foot leaving the arrow at times. I love the sensitivity! |

If RO pulled something out of their a*s (i.e. a working control box) would you guys recommend getting this over a CF? I'm leaning towards this pad but I would like it to work. |

My one afterburner has a stripped hole in the corner of the bad where the screw is, and i can't do anything about it. =[
I'm gonna get it replaced. |

"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
Considering it's an electronic piece of equipment that has had electronic problems... it's a bit difficult to judge what it would be if it DIDN'T have a broken up arrow, disconnection problems, and spazzing ps2 connections. |

The only problem I've had with mine is that it doesn't work with USB, but it works fine with PS2, or in my case, PS2->adapter->pc. I'd say I recommend it. Someone above said it looked cheaply put together; I disagree, I think it looks really solid, and it feels like the arcade. (It took me a while to figure out I could take off the plastic sealed stuff over it. I know, I'm not that bright. Once you do that it looks a lot better, since there's bubbles in the plastic.)
OTOH, I'm not a very experienced player; I do 4 and 5 footers at home and at the arcade, and this is my first pad besides some crappy floppy ones off ebay. So I'm not exactly an expert.
I don't suppose anyone has a working Afterburner, and a CF, and knows their stuff better than me, and could compare the two?
Other than that, it's mostly gonna be posts from people (like me) who've come to this thread because they've had trouble with theirs, which isn't a representative sample, I don't think. (I probably wouldn't have come to this thread if I hadn't had USB problems, so I wouldn't be here to tell you how much I love the thing.)
BTW, I got a new control box in the mail yesterday, but didn't have a chance to try it out yet. They had said they were only going to send the plug, but they sent the whole CB. I'm not sure why or what that means, but I can't complain. I'll try just the plug first tonight and see what happens. It took 3 days to get here, and they had quoted 3 to 5. But I'm in Las Vegas, which isn't too far from California. |

Well, I played on an Afterburner at E3, and I own a Cobalt Flux that's a month and a half shy of being two years old. I'll certainly vouch for the durability and sensitivity of the Cobalt Flux, and the Afterburner seemed fairly sensitive (though I noticed arrows firing while standing on the center panel).
If you're just playing on a PS2, I'd recommend the CF with the recessed panels mod (though, I almost never go to the arcade, so I don't use such a mod).
As for XBox, hehe... it looks like neither company has a direct XBox control box that registers as a pad and works all of the time. _________________

Ok, I tried just the plug without the control box with the USB adapter, and in the middle of the first song my computer shut off. (I've had this issue once or twice before, but not for a while.)
So I hooked up the new control box too, did a few songs and didn't have any trouble. Crossing my fingers, but I think it's fixed! |

DHL should be here some time today to give me my afterburner...I can't freaking wait. I'm hoping I don't have any control box problems but I'm using a ps2 and not too many people seem to have trouble with them. Still...I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I thought long and hard about getting this or a CF and ended up deciding on this based on looks (ok...maybe $$$ had something to do with it ) Hopefully I won't regret it. Does anyone happen to know the dimensions of the CF off-hand? Wondering if they're the same size. Anyhow I'll post my thoughts on the pad once I get some use out of it. Tonights gonna be a loooooong night |

I got my new control box last night.
My up arrow remains dead.
Dead, dead, dead.
No idea about the disconnect problem cause I can't pass any songs with my up arrow out of order.
RedOctane had me fill out a new return form, they say they are going to have me ship the whole thing back.
Sigh.
I had high hopes for the new cbox. And I had high hopes of playing on my afterburner sometime this month, seeing as it's been out of order for two weeks already. |

You exactly summed up my problem. RO told me that this problem happens in 10/500 Afterburners, which translates into 20,000/1,000,000. Not so good if you're the quality control manager @ RO. _________________

No, 10/500 = 2%.
2% of the Afterburners have this problem then. That's not that bad. _________________

That's not that good either. Optimal = less than or equal to 1%. But w/e. Maybe I'm just pissed because I've had my Afterburner for weeks and haven't been able to play yet. Usually i'm just putzin' around on Stepmania. I'm going through a sort of "DDR-depression" right now. _________________

Well, I just ordered my Afterburner today. I've obliterated two RO Ignition 2.0 pads so far so I figured it was time I upgraded. I've been mulling over the idea of purchasing a CF pad for at least half a year now, but 300 USD translates to more than 400 CND, plus the cost of shipping and duties for crossing the border...blah!
The Afterburner is 100 USD cheaper than the CF pad and I've dealt with RO's technical support before who, after some time, did eventually replace my first ignition pad. They even went as far as to let me keep the broken pad since it would have cost too much to have it shipped back to them. So I'm confident that if I have any problems (control box, breakage, etc.) I'll be able to have them deal with it, albeit probably fairly slowly.
At present I'm 240lbs, a good 60 lbs lighter than I was last year thanks to eating better and DDR, so I'll let everyone know how solid I think the pad feels under my weight. I'll be sure to give it a proper review once I've played on it a while, tested it with my xbox (I bought ITG for PS2 with the pad, but at present I only own both Ultramix games), etc.
I'm so stoked about finally getting a metal pad, and the fact that it is similar to the arcade feel is a plus since I've only been able to play ITG in the arcades up until now. |

All right, so after a long night of playing on my spankin new afterburner I have this to say....I love it! Now I've never played on a CF, in fact, I've never even played on an ignition...nothing but cheapo 20 pads for me, heh...so I can't really make any comparisons, but it works extremely well. As for how like the arcade it is...I'm not going to say it's exactly like it, probably nothing ever will be, but it does recreate the feel quite well. In other words I'm very happy with it. It was worth my 240 bucks. I do have a couple of gripes with it though. First, that plastic was a pain in the butt to take off and not only that it doesn't come off well. The greyish white plastic on three of the panels was easy enough after taking them off, but I didn't want to go unscrewing the arrows and that clear plastic just doesn't come off well. The first one I took off left bits of plastic all in the corner. Grr. I am an INSANE perfectionist so I sat there and plucked all the little pieces away but WHAT A PAIN. But after that I figured out a better way to do it. SO, for all you other perfectionists out there...if you want to get the clear plastic off the arrows without unscrewing anything, the easiest cleanest way to do so is by pulling the plastic up in a line across the center and tearing it apart so it's in two halves. Then pull up till you get closer to the brackets and rip it off quickly like eyebrow waxing or something Hey, it worked for me. Aaaaanyhow, the other more important thing I noticed was that I'm getting double or even triple the greats I used to get. It feels like I need to step right in the center of the arrow to get a perfect and that I don't like much. So while I'm FCing more songs I've missed out on AA's due to too many greats. Grr again. I was wondering if anyone else had that kind of problem...if so, lemme know. But overall I'll still give the afterburner an A. Now we'll just see how long it lasts |
