Does anyone know where I can get some sort of computer peripheral that can be used with StepMania for lighting effects in sync with the playing songs? (If you didn't know, SM already has built-in support for it, it's just not documented). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I'm not positive if this is the right forum, as the topic at hand is fairly ambiguous, so some confirmation on that would be greatly appreciated as well. |

I've heard of lights being successfully used with StepMania on several occasions, and I have a picture somewhere on the hard drive. Somewhere. -_-; With my hierarchy system, it'll take a while to find it.
For some quick evidence, though, look in StepMania.ini and find "LightsStepsDifficulty", which should have a default value of medium. This obviously determines the stepchart that SM follows to sync the lights with. I'll highlight the section of the source that it's in once I find it, but I have school to go to. >_< Be back later.
Also, thanks for the suggestion, dash, but I'm looking for something that'll follow a set pattern. |

If you read on the main page of www.stepamania.com you will see "Windows: Disabled parallel port lights driver due to GPL-incompatibility." However, CNLohr still has the dll file needed for SM lights. He also wrote how to install them and what youll need. He has pictures to

So that GPL problem... Was that removed because of some copyright/patent issues? Or will that cause StepMania to start acting up if I put it back in the RC3?
Also I've looked into it. I have some home pads I bought from eBay that have lights. The DDR machine in the Arcade also controls the lights on the pads. I don't think StepMania can do that too. As far as my understanding goes, what StepMania controls is the 4 blinking lights next the the Extreme Sign, the select buttons on the front of the unit, and lastly the light rings around the woofers on the cabinet. Which is still cool, but like I said it be awesome if it could connect StepMania to my home pads. My family would think I've gone beyond addiction
Is it hard for someone to write up the controls for that pads anyway? All I think they do is allow lighting up when machine is in use, and after a song they (i think) light up in a clockwise motion. I'm sure there are spare pins in the parallel port that we could use?
Thanks to anyone with any info on this.

"GPL incompatibility" generally means that the code was removed because it was under a license that was not compatible with the GPL. For example, if a piece of code has a license that specifies that it can't be sold or can't be used for commercial purposes, that code can't be incorporated into a GPL program (like Stepmania) because the GPL explicitly states that GPL'd software CAN be sold, used for commercial purposes, etc. Similarly, if a piece of software is under a license that says something like "you may incorporate any of this code into other programs as long as you notify me and/or give me credit", then that software could not be put into a GPL'd program like Stepmania because the GPL does not allow restrictions like that.
Although I don't have any idea about the reason this particular driver was GPL-incompatible, you can be sure that it has only to do with licensing and not with any technical concerns. |
