I like the step patterns in ITG alot. However, ITG is really technical, and the tunes of the songs back that up. If you want some fun playing, not worrying about getting really high scores, like freestyle or general fun. Then DDR is definately the way to go.
It's definately good to have both to play with! _________________

I think that they are just bad and are getting progressively worse. You know something's wrong when the US console versions get ahead of the Japanese versions. |

Pump > ITG > DDR, personally.
I found ITG's Hard and Expert charts a lot more fun and intuitive than DDR's, but it's still a lot more difficult for me to find a flow for 16th death runs on four panel, and the mines are just plain nasty(but they have their appeal).
The doubles were fun though, much more accessible than the psychotic singles.
I mostly just have more fun on five/ten arrow since there's more ease of play, playing ITG wore me out like five times quicker than a run of Exceed 2 would. It was still refreshing to play something new and experience new music though, always is.
Oh, and the backgrounds were neat too. Simple, but cool. (I like the title screens popping up with key beats of the song, a la Xuxa and Tell, especially.)
Yeah, and the music was nice too. A bit genre-specific, but there's a good variety of the techno/trance, so no complaint there. (And the brief usage of hiphop is nice too.. I'd definetly like to see that expanded on in the future. PA Theme was probably the most fun chart I played.) _________________

Hmm from playing all the simfiles on pad of ITG I have to say its pretty entertaining, I havent played on an arcade machine though so I cant elaborate on the two.
ITG for challenge
DDR for accuracy
ITG for crazy mods
DDR for stupidly catchy songs
ITG for mines and hands
DDR has clever off-step steps that make you think
ITG has ALOT of steps..
DDR 1 minute 30 seconds )=
ITG 3 minutes or more ITG>DDR Money wise |

PAing is MUCH easier than FAing
ITG songs are no longer than 2 minutes 20 seconds IF that. _________________

I love both DDR and ITG. ITG's tougher, but I like to hear DDR's songs more often. I don't see why most people can't just accept that they're both fun in their own respect. I'd probably play both equally at the arcade, if it weren't for the fact that the closest ITG machine is over 2 hours away from me. As for PIU, I've tried playing it, and I'm horrible because of its diagonal buttons. I just can't get the DDR/ITG pad out of my head, and I end up hitting a lot of metal in PIU. The only thing that would keep me from buying PIU for PS2 is that I'd have to buy (or in my case, make) a separate pad just to play it (unless PIU has some sneaky mod to turn of the center button, and make the arrows face "normal"). |

Well, ITG looks damn promising from what I see watching the videos. Music is pretty spiffy too.
DDR...well, it's dead. I'm not gonna deny that and I've been playing since Extreme came out.
As a result, playing the same songs over and over gets stale like moldy bread. And ITG is a fresh breath of air. Not to mention challenging (some of the stepcharts look ridiculous!).
PIU...haven't played it yet, but I seriously don't like diagonals. Silly reason I know. _________________

As to why, I think it's a bit of a psychological thing. The first time I saw ITG, I remember my first thoughts were "what the hell is this DDR-imitation crap? I bet it sucks", and went right to the extreme machine. I hadn't seen anyone play on it, and because I was somewhat limited with my money I wasn't too excited about trying something new. Maybe I'm just more conservitive, I don't know.
I got past the whole "AHH It's NEW!!!11" thing and tried it, I was still a bit wary of it, mostly because I picked dumb songs and I wasn't sure how high I could go skill wise. I went on and off on it a few times, I was still getting a feel for it.
The first time I -really- got to go nuts on it was during the FYE tourney in Jan. I didn't qualify (by one perfect, so embaressing, I could rip that song apart now *Frozen Ray for those curious*) and I wanted something to do other than watch everyone else get SDGs and AAAs, so I went off to check out ITG. I ended up really liking it, finally.
A while later, after passing Charlene, Vertex, Xuxa and some others, and really getting to know ITG, I started not liking DDR and I kind of ripped on it every time it would come up in convorsation.
What I'm trying to say is that I think it's a psychological thing- people -want- something to hate, it's easier to not like something than it is to like something. ITG is more to my liking personally because I'm into crazy edits on SM, and being able to do exp songs on my feet is just plain fun, I dunno. After I realized what I had been doing, hating DDR just because it was another game and something I didn't enjoy as much, I started playing both a bit more. I'd do a game or two of ITG and then when someone else's turn came I'd go to didder a bit while I'm waiting to go up. I knew my round would be shorter than the person's playing ITG so I wouldn't have to worry about rushing. One thing that -does- bug me about ITG though- no extra stage. At the arcade I go to, it's a dollar for three songs, which really sucks in my opinion, even if they are a bit longer. I don't think a dollar for four would really make a huge difference, maybe if the place gets crowded because four songs can get kind of long. /shrug, just my opinion. |

I just started playing ITG because i got it for the PS2.
Even when I lived in Las Vegas I never saw a ITG machine so I couldnt try out the DDR subsitute.
Just for background
Im 6'2 235LBs and I have found moving my weight around to play DDR a challenge at first and after almost 2 years playing DDR I still can only play a handfull of songs on heavy.
and after 2 years the DDR songs just became stale...instead of playing every day it became every 2 days...then 3.
I have all the games for us and japan and could only take so many "remixes"
ITG is a breath of life back into my desire to play dance games.
Like DDR there are about 10-15% of songs ill just never play because i dont like them but i like the song lenghts better and glad the J-pop is on the shelf for this title.
Only reason I like the ITG now more then DDR is because DDR hasnt given me really anything new in so long.....I was so dissappointed after USEXTREME.
DDR extreme 2 has alot now to live up to in my eyes now that its not the only dance game out there. I know there is pump it up but its just not as distributed as DDR or even ITG now that its on PS2.
I bet DDr will be more fun to play after I play ITG for a couple months instead.
Im just glad that the dance game market is expanding....I mean imagine that the only fighting game that we had was street fighter and we just kept getting upgrades like turbo and special edition ect......we would all walk away from it.....it took games like tekken and soul calibur to take the fighting game in the right direction by adding compititon.
Overall atm I find ITG>DDR |
