I recently purchased a RedOctane ignition 3.0, and loved it for the first week, and now I'm having troubles with the down arrow. I had expected there to be problems, just not this soon. I guess this is due to the amount and level I play (I play twice a day everyday, and do from 7-9 footers and TRY 10, which is probably worse than actually doing them if you know what I mean). Considering I play this much, I need a really strong pad, but do I really have any alternative to the RO ignition without going to a hardpad? The prices for the afterburner or the CF are out of the question, and I know all of the TX-are not very dependable. I see the do it yourself pad on this forum, would that be my best option? How hard is it to make, and how much will it cost? If not, is there some pad that I'm missing that would solve my problems?

We just finished building our first DIY DDR Pad today, (DDRHomePad style) and I can tell you, for 3 teens that know nothing about metal working, wood working, or soldering, it went remarkably well. We christened it today with songs, and all is well. It is not difficult at all...bit time consuming and occasionally frustrating.

I didn't fund this pad, but if I do one of my own, I'm inclined to follow Stroli's instructions. Why? Because DDRHomePad's construction is damn near impossible to get square and perfect. It looks fine, but during construction it's a pain. Stroli's, on the other hand, is built on top of a plywood board and thus has proper backing to it.

Ah Promit, that is very encouraging, I will go look at STroli's instructions now...

Ah, it probably is the plug. I use it on my computer, and it works fine, so....but I don't have an xbox, and I want something I can use on my ps2.

Sorry, it's Stoli, not "stroli".

Instructions are here.

Yes, I looked him up on the home pad thread and found looked at the plans. I do think that plan will be better for me, mainly because of the sturdiness. On homepad's original plan it had those strips, but that is all hardwood, and that is something I need weighing in at 200 pounds and doing 9-10 footers on hvy. I believe I have sufficient skills to make most of the pad, except for the soldering, which I think my dad can do decently. I'm going to take my RO back today, then I will just have to convince my parents into letting me embark on this pad building adventure. Any general tips about the construction?

Well, we followed DDRHomePad's instructions down to the letter. Just be careful in terms of measuring the lexan and sheet metal and wood and everything else. You don't want to cut something wrong.

A few things about the contacts, however. Put the weather stripping at the very outer edge of the steps, not the inner edge of the duct tape. These senors rely primarily on the center of the lexan bending downwards to cause the two metal contacts to connect. So you want as much space as possible for the step to bend.

DDRHomePad puts the weather stripping like this:
Code:

***************
*  ---   ---  *
*  |       |  *
*  |       |  *
*             *
*  |       |  *
*  |       |  *
*  ---   ---  *
*             *
***************

The asterisks are the edge of the step, the lines are the stripping. This doesn't result in very good sensitivity on the edge. It might (I haven't tried it) be a good idea to put screws in the gaps in between the stripping. Also, it might be worth trying an alternate arrangement, like so:
Code:

***************
*    /   \    *
*   /     \   *
*  /       \  *
*             *
*  \       /  *
*   \     /   *
*    \   /    *
*             *
***************

Hopefully that's understandable. The strips should be farther out to the corner than the ASCII drawing shows, but I think you get the idea. This frees up more contact area on the edges, at the cost of the corners (which are never going to contact well anyway). Again, I have not tried this modification to the original sensor design, so I don't know how well it will work.
