|

Ok, someone must've asked this before (probably lots of people), but I couldn't find in the last few pages of threads.
My daughter (11) and I have been playing StepMania at home for a couple months now. We're having a great time, and we've worked our way up to 4 and 5 footers, so we went to play at the arcade last night. (Actually Peter Piper's here in Las Vegas, full of screaming teenagers. )
We had a lot of fun, but they had DDR Extreme, and it didn't play or look exactly like what we've got at home. For some reason my "goal" when I'm playing at home (besides having fun and getting excercise) is to practice for the arcade, so I've decided to focus on trying to get StepMania here to work as much like DDR Extreme Arcade as I can.
So here's the problems I observed:
-The pads. Actually, we're ok here, got Afterburner for bday. w00t! Now I wish we had two so we could play at the same time, but that will have to wait.
-Themes and announcers. Found and installed these. When I heard the announcers at the arcade it threw me off at first, because I hadn't really played with announcers before, so I wanna make sure to have this obnoxious guy harassing me to get into practice.
-Timing. The timing windows were definately harder at arcade. I came home and found the sticky here and set StepMania to be like "8th Mix". 8th mix means Extreme in U.S., right? Hopefully I've got this working now. It feels harder at home than it was...
-The songs. Working on that. Do I have it right that there are like a dozen "lists" of songs, and Extreme Arcade has songs from all sorts of previous mixes, including wacky stuff like Guitar Heroes and Home DDR?
-Screaming teenagers. Actually, these guys can stay at the arcade. Though the kids really playing were polite, and when we put our token on the machine to stay in line they respected it, even when it was my daughter without me. Seeing a kid beating Max 300 on heavy was a little intimidating, though. Someday...
Is there anything else I'm missing to make the home experience as much like arcade as possible?

However without compiling your own version of Stepmania, and some SEVERE work, you wont get EXACTLY like DDR Extreme, its better to get the timings right, and have all the songs (and ones that arent on DDR Extreme) because its alot less work and gives more features. _________________

the timings is really all that matters, and the songwheel and colors, i mean its just a difference in colors, its not like OMGZZORS ITS GREEN!! I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!EDFSJDFHKASJLD, it's just color, and the announcer shouldn't really make a different |

Yeah, actually maybe I mispoke in the subject. I don't really care if it's exactly like arcade, I just want most or all of the same songs, and hopefully a similar announcer and theme. One thing bugging me about the supposed DDR Extreme Arcade theme I have is that lots of it is in Japanese. But I don't remember seeing any Japanese stuff on the American arcade version.
Anyway, I have most of the songs now. It's really a lot more fun to play the songs the everyone on the forum is always talking about. Also, practicing up for our next trip back to the arcade. |

I don't know what SM was based off of, but the default timings are a LOT wider than Extreme. |

Ok, we just went back to the arcade tonight, and the timing windows in the "The SM Timing Window Configurations" sticky are definately pretty close. I can beat 5 footers at home, and same at arcade, and can't beat 6 footers, and same as well. It really felt the same, too.
Also, the Japanese arcade theme I have turned out to be dead on with the Japanese-use-only version that Peter Piper's inexplicably has. (Doesn't "for use in Japan" mean anything? Not that I mind, it's sorta cool.) Anyway, I'm pretty happy!
I did notice that the grades scroll in a different way at the arcade: they go straight to A or whatever, not to AAAA and then back to A like SM does. Maybe I'll try to figure out how to change that; not because I'm anal, but because I like the arcade way better.
Thanks for your help, everyone! |

95% of all arcade DDR machines in the United States are from Japan (and probably about half of them are bootlegged upgrades of cabinets from older mixes). All the main-line arcade mixes (1st through 8th/Extreme) are Japanese imports. There hasn't been a U.S. arcade release of DDR in about 5-6 years, I think. The only arcade mixes released in the United States were DDR USA and Disney Mix many years ago (I'm not not counting the horrible Playstation2-Extreme-in-an-arcade-cabinet fiasco from earlier this year, because Konami had NOTHING to do with that). All other machines in the United States are imported from Japan (excluding a few rare old Korean versions, and the tiny handful of Dancing Stage machine that wound up in the United States somehow).
The Japanese versions (i.e. every arcade version produced in the past ~5 years, excluding the European Dancing Stage series which you're unlikely to ever see in the United States) all display the "for use in Japan only" message because when Konami negotiates music licences for the songs, they only buy Japanese distribution rights (because it's cheaper and easier). They don't actually care much (if at all) about machines going overseas, though. They're just contractually obligated to put in the warning. |
