If someone does better on 511 Beginner with the bar then they should go ahead. _________________

I've figured out over time that there's really no point in arguing against using the bar, if someone is comfortable using the bar, let them, if they aren't then they don't. I can understand threatening them if they stomp on the pads, or damage the DDR machine in any way, but holding the bar...really who cares? |

I don't care if people use the bar, I rarely do, but that is because I have no technique for doing so.
With that in mind, for those of you who do use the bar (For 10 footers. Or maybe even 11+ for ITG) how do you do it without feeling awkward?
Is there a method for using it? A better place to hold your hands? Do you hold yourself up with the bar, or do you just use it for balance?
It really does perplex me, because everytime I try to use the bar I fail. |

All these arguments over the use of the bar are overrated. its like calling a waltz not a dance because all you ever do is the tango. its a style of dancing that may seem cheap, but its not affecting you in any way, unless your a betazoid and can feel the emotions of people around you. |

The machine's user manual says that the bar shouldn't be held onto. That's the official take.
I say, if you payed for your set, and you're not breaking the machine - do whatever the hell you want. _________________

I personally am for the most part indifferent to people using the bar. I think if they're going to do it, they should learn to do it one-handed and should first learn to keep a center of balance without it, but that's just personal opinion. When I see someone relying completely on the bar, I explain to them that if they don't work on a center of balance before they reach heavy and strictly stick with the bar, it's going to end up coming back to haunt them. If they want to listen, they listen. If they don't, they don't.
Me personally, I never use the bar under normal circumstances. Not because I think it's wrong. Strangely, I actually forget that it's even there. I'm so focused on just moving from one note to the next and enjoying the song that I don't have time to be bothered with thinking about the bar behind me.
There is one song I "use" the bar for, and it's Orion .78 Ameuro Mix on Heavy mode. I don't need the bar at all. I can get an A without it. Rather, I've seen too many people throw their legs over the bar during the 16 down notes in the middle of the song and I've gotten tired of watching them do it, so when those 16 down notes come up, I make humping motions against the bar just to show them what I think of their lack of originality when they "freestyle" (and by "freestyle", I mean they don't do ANYTHING else in the song before or after that point other than hitting the notes as per usual play).
Ultimately, to each their own. |

I use the bar, but only have one hand on it. It helps me to do the jumps and not to fall off. It really helps on high footers when your feet are moving a lot. |

Well, they probably say that so that they don't get sued just in case it does break for whatever reason. Probably for the same reason McDonald's has to say "Caution: Coffee is Hot." _________________

True, on Instant Lunch cups of soup it says: "Caution: Hot. Be careful especially when serving children." Don't ask me why that's relevant. |

i always use the bar, no matter which song i do. my goal for regular play is to PA songs, and i PA better with bar.
the only exception is extra stage. i prefer not to bar ES, because i mainly do ES for fun (casual play). i even passed max 300 ES no bar once, and i'm trying to complete paranoia survivor on it no bar as well.
i don't wanna start playing without bar on regular play, because i don't feel like to. my PA has gotten a lot better, and i don't wanna turn around and go to playing no bar. besides, my arms are also getting a good workout as well. _________________

I have no real issue with the bar. Granted I'm no expert but if people want to use it, doesn't bother me.
I have a question, is it possible to AAA w/o the bar? I've seen lots of vids where people AA w/o the bar but never an AAA w/o. I've seen the Yasu vids and he seems to AAA with that bar consistently but as soon as he stops using the bar, the closest he gets is AA. |

I could care less if a newb does it 'cuz it's kinda humerous to watch. I only hate it when pros hang onto the bar. Listen, you could be the godliest DDR player on the planet, but if you have to hang onto the bar the entire song, even if it's MAX 300 on Heavy, I have no respect for you. It's the equivalent of the jackasses who use hacks on Counter-Strike and honestly believe they're "1337". |

I had to use it last time my friend and I went to the arcade. We've only done easy heavy mode songs at the arcade, but can AA standard songs. I decided to try out Holic (on heavy). It had been about 3 hours of DDRing for the both of us, so I ended up using the bar. I got an A on it, though. =D The bar really helped me, because I can step a bit harder without losing my balance. A couple of the pads at my arcade aren't overly sensitive, because of idiots stomping on them. =| |

I've AAA'd many songs without holding the bar. In fact, I haven't actually AAA'd anything holding the bar, but I suppose it'll happen eventually if I try really hard. I've brought a few songs down to consistent SDG holding the bar, but I haven't AAA'd anything that way yet. It's an awkward play style for me so I often flub on the up arrow.
That all said, I'm not the best so there are a lot of people who have done the same and more. It's very possible. |
