RedOctane recently invited us to try out their new metal pad, the Afterburner. The Afterburner review is the first in our new Reviews section, where we will post our opinions of the various music games and hardware that come out on the market.

it would have been nice if it was tested on an xbox or pc...that seems to be where most people have problems with the afterburner.

Pics other than the stock marketing shots would have been nice, as would impressions of the pad over a few days' use. Testing a piece of equipment in a controlled environment like that isn't necessarily a true representation of how well it works in the wild.

This pad is really really good.

Obviously no one knows about it's longevity yet but it has the best arcade feel.

I found that after a while the screws will come a little loose but didn't come off and it's easy just to tighten them a little.

I'll be doing a side by side comparison versus the still contorversial TX-5000. I should get the afterburner tomorrow, but the review might be a week out since I will be out of town. All that DDR equipment sitting all alone for a week wit h no one to play on it

My Afterburner did not come with a bracket and a wrench for doubles. No way that I can see to attach them together.

What console did you test the Afterburner on? I guess they had you on a PS2, cause if you were on the PC or the XBOX you would've seen the real problem.

There are disconnect issues with the PC or with the XBOX. "Insert Controller 1" during the middle of a dance.

Also the USB cable extention clips onto the XBOX cable so you still have to worry about loosing your USB extension. How annoying.

My afterburner does travel after dances. Only about an inch, to one side, but it does move.

Do not buy this pad until they fix the XBOX/PC issues. Also they are lying about the "bracket" kit as well.

the question is, will it be just as reliable as a cobalt flux?

because if it is just as good as the CF, ill buy it just for the recessed panels.

See that is what sux about buying something so expensive. You dont know for sure if it will hold up 5minutes or 5 years. You dont know how easy it is to work on it and you dont know if its compatible. I too would love to buy one but all these things keep me from it. I have built 4 pads so far and they do pretty well. But I always sell them and sometimes just dont feel like building more.
I wish there was someway you could play on one for a whole day and look how its made.....That would rock!

All we can do is wait.

I know those mods are going to be great. Yeah, and on the afterburner.. it seemed that they were trying to sell the product more than write up a review. In the afterburner forum, there are plenty of issues that need to be addressed. I think they should have tried those out and stated that in the review.

The afterburner LOOKS amazing, A LOT better than the UGLY CF.

I'd like to play on one though.
