Me personally, it depends on the song. If I'm confident of my own abilities on the song, I really don't care if someone shadows me in most cases. But when I'm attempting songs I haven't passed yet, I often listen to my steps as much as I read the notes on the screen just to be certain I'm keeping proper time and not moving too fast or slow. If you get someone on the pad next to you who is shadowing and gets lost on parts or simply elects to mess around and just stomp the best they can on gauntlet-runs, it kinda kills your ability to really listen well to the steps you're taking.

Obviously, if someone pays for a game and is doing the same thing on said song, not much you can complain about. It's their money and it's your fault for risking a song that they can mess you up on.

Again though, if I'm already confident, I could care less. I'm all about people getting better by whatever means works for them.

And as a side note, I agree with the recent post concerning people who give you advice when you're already on the upper end of the totem pole. There's this guy who comes to the mall once a week or so to play. He's definitely good. Got a ways to go, but definitely better than most people I've seen here. Anyway, I intentionally double-step through songs as of late and he sits there after I finish songs, telling me about how I need to learn to crossover because double-stepping "looks really gay and is so much harder"...firstly, I'm not going to argue semantics concerning whether double-stepping is harder than crossing over. People play the way they play and beyond suggestions, there's nothing to really do but let people handle things their own way.

This kid insists on telling me that the reason I'm not passing songs is strictly because I'm not crossing over. He tries to offer up a demonstration and I tell him I already know what they are. According to him, I clearly don't because I'm not using them. I proceed to do several on the pad just to show him I know how. LDRDLURULDRDLURUL...just a little sequence to prove that I can face left and right when necessary...and I tell him that I *WANT* to practice double-stepping songs...I tell him I want to work on my stamina and that crossing over is not required in order to pass every song that has multiples in it. He reverts back to the "double-stepping just looks gay and it's all about style" bit. For all his style, I can't seem to help but notice that much like everyone else around here, his only two special tricks are spinning around on jumps in Afronova and the bar-hop on the 16 down notes in Orion .78 Ameuro Mix on x3.

Man, nevermind. This doesn't make me angry, this just depresses me.

Maybe because it could break the player's concentration?

And if they are really terrible at it too.

I'm going to guess that you aren't a PA'er. With someone flailing about on the pad next to me, I get at least twice as many greats as I usually do.

Often times, a person shadowing on the other pad has several inconsiderate issues that go along with them. I'll just list four of them:

  • They usually don't ask first, which immediately makes them inconsiderate from the start.
  • The don't usually don't have any reasonable accuracy with the steps, which adds distracting off-beat stage vibrations to the steps I'm trying to read, step properly, feel for accuracy as I step on the arrow panel, and check against the arrows for accuracy. (And I won't play an easier song just for their benefit, that's for sure.)
  • Alternatively, if they do know the steps since they've memorized the entire song, they proceed to show off by doing slides and spins and other "freestyle" stuff that may be fine when they play, but not while I'm playing my game as that stuff is also distracting enough.
  • If they are freestyling, they are also a collision nuisance. For example, I've been hit, which thankfully did not cause injury, by showoff freestyle shadowers who are not the least bit considerate nor apologetic about not swinging their arms wide.

And asking permission only gets rid of one issue, and the other three remaining issues still remain issues.

Players who want to shadow can always do that behind that stage, read the arrows off the screen and step the steps on the floor, rather than on the empty stage.

Old school DDR players learning new songs did just that a couple of years back and were much more considerate than the new crop of empty stage shadowers that players end up dealing with nowadays. Sometimes, there would be three or more players practicing the steps by shadowing on the floor, and that's still far more considerate than the one player that takes it upon themself to shadow on the empty stage panels.

maybe im just too nice of a person, because i dont really think about it when people get on the pad without askin. And as far as getting off beat goes, the music at the arcade i go to is loud enough to not to hear your foot steps. but i guess i see what you mean.

The other day i was playing max 300 on heavy after i beat legend of max (only got a b though, curse the last part of that song!) , and one of the new guys (greatly improving though) tried to shadow me and about 20-30 seconds into the song (where the steps get really fast) he slips and stumbles on to me. we both fall off the pad but luckily my friend was right behind my bar and jumped in.

- when lil kids complain everyone is skiping them and go tell an employee
- when ppl just stand/sit around the ddr machine like their waiting in line to play when their actually not and they just clog up the machine. Stand off to the side or something. (relating to when there is no coin line)
- when theres all dust on the pad from the last person causing it to be more slipperly than usual. luckily theres always a cloth kept by my local arcade's machine to solve that problem.
- when ppl dont know how to use a coin line
- goths

i dont care if someone always plays the same song, its their time, let them play what they want, as long as their havin their fun.

OMG this girl was a cousin of a friend at school and she was @ Beginner while I was @ heavy. I'm blurring Standard/Heavy, so I did Graduation (7f), and then w/o notice, she picks Tears (9f) and I suck. Tho I can do Bag and get a C. (simply proud)

Also, I do unsanctioned shadowing all the time. With the Gurnee, IL posse, I shadowed for A Heavy 3x, so...

The only things that bother me are:

The ignorant fags who don't know what a coin line is, so they take the coins, thinking it's charity and use it for their game.

The off beat noobs that shadow so completly off beat it's sad. I don't mind if it's like, my little brother or something. But just an ignorant "I can do better than you" type.

Little kids that spill or drop their shit on the pad while I'm playing, try to pick it up, get stepped on, and have their moms yell at me. All while I'm playing. Last time that happened I stopped my game and launched the little kids sucker at her face and it hit her good. Since I know the owner and she tried to get ME kicked out, he kicked her out.

And last but no least, people that always pick 10's trying to show off and fail yet try to make me fail because they don't want to look stupid.

Idiots who refer to it as Dance Dance Revolution, and even after they learn it's also called DDR, still call it Dance Dance Revolution. *coughcoughmyfriendmarkcoughcough* He's like "There's a Dance Dance Revolution Extreme @ Rinkside!" Wow. I know. You sound retarded.

How about no?

Everyone, whether they're good or bad at the game, has the right to play.

Unless they're being an asshat and destroying the machine.

when people try to start shadowing but are to stupid to look before they get on and yell at me cause I'm playing doubles and transition right into them and push them off (too many times has this happened)

When stupid parents let their stupid three year old play with a bouncy ball right by the machine and the stupid kid hops onto the machine while I'm playing and I almost kill them because they needed their bouncy ball back

Drunk people- hahaha your so funny disturb.gif

kids who stand two inches from the machine while I'm doing R&P doubles and I kick them and then they yell at me

Playing against Lexsip is aggrivating for me. I played him on Ultramix once and we did Outer Limits heavy. Thats the only 10footer that I can beat and thats a C and thats a ton of work. He got C first time ever playing it against me. grr.
