Beatmania Learning Curve

I just got Beatmania IIDX 8th style, and I was wondering if anyone has any tips about how to position your hands on the controller. I have the Konami Beatmania IIDX controller, and I'm able to pass very few 3 star songs in begginers mode. I think I have it down, sorta, but I'm just curious if there are any "reccomended hand positions."


I'm also curious as to how long it took people to pass their first seven star song, so I know how long I have to go.

I just started IIDX about 2-3 weeks ago.... April 4th to be exact (you always remember shipping dates. lol)

Anyway, im already up to being able to pass 6 stars in light 7. I started with 6th style. My hand position? I think its kinda wierd to be honest, but it works really good. When resting i put my index and middle fingers of my left hand on keys 1 and 3. Right hand is the crazy part: index on 4 thumb on 5 middle on 6 ring on 7.

Incase you dont know the numbers yet, the bottom left white key is 1, top left black is 2.... etc etc.

It's a wierd hand setup in a way. When theres a 2-3 roll or something i use my middle finger on 2 and my thumb on 3. Since my right hand has a finger on every key that hands pretty easy to work with.

No, there's really no one set recommended hand position, just go with what works, and as songs get harder, you'll adapt around those songs with practice. Just remember, pinkies and thumbs are really handy in alot of songs.

As for first 7... I think it was Happy Wedding or Somebody Like You, which I cleared after about.. 6 or 7 months (4 months of you consider G2 L7 a 7*).

I think The Strong Jaeger was my first 7 and it took about 4-5 months for that. My first flashing 7 was Spin The Disc but it's not a flashing 7 anymore. Matter of fact, on that note, there is not a single flashing 7 that I'm even close to beating. They are too hard for me but its still fun to try.

As stated above, just go with what works best for you. There are some weird positions like a 2 and 5 or 1 2 and 7 at the same time in a few songs that will throw you off but most of the time, those just take finding the way to recognize that pattern and getting your fingers to get in position fast enough to hit it and then return back to the next note.

Also, don't think that using two hands is a bad thing. Sure it can look cool, but you're really just limiting yourself. I only do one hand for fun, or to help my dexterity. Never when Im seriously trying to beat a song.

I've been playing IIDX at least a year now off and on, and I'm starting to think I learned with the turntable on the wrong side (I'm a leftie playing with the turntable on the right side, does it matter?). I can only beat most L7 5-stars but that's about it.

I'm not slow or anything, I can beat nearly anything on DDR and Pop'n Music. I play like crap when I switch the turntable to the left side; any experts out there notice that they play significantly better on one side or the other?

It's depressing to see that everybody is passing 7-stars after only a few months, what am I doing wrong?

It took me a full hour before I beat my first level 1 song on beginner's mode ; ;

I started on Beginner mode, but looking back, I think Beginner mode is garbage. A lot of the songs have inaccurate ratings. I'd just start out in Light7, it's not that much harder until you get up to the 5's or 6's.
