9 Pages....didn't look through it all but I found a method, after a year of attempted simfiles, that works.

First: Find the BPM with MixMeister's BPM Analyzer, it's awsome and finds the BPM down to the thousandth. It's only the second program, in my year of searching, that is actually perfectly accurate.

Second: Use X-Step to create the DWI itself (not the steps) (enter in the BPM you got from MM). Find the gap with X-step, as close as you can.

Third: After everything is in the right folder, go into SM's edit mode and fine tune the gap. The BPM shouldn't need to be tuned any more.

That's how I handle it. I can't say it workes perfectly yet because I'm still in the midst of making a stepfile with this theory. Seems to be working quite well though.

Ok I got the BPM and stuff, but there is a BPM change in the middle of the song and I can't figure out how to make it work with the file. How do you put in BPM changes? I'm using the xstep thing btw.

I can't seem to get the characters to dance on the how to play screen or beginner mode. I know it won't work on the other themes, so I switch to the default them, and it still doesn't work!

Newbie here, making first stepfile.

MP3 works, background works. But the banner flashes for half a second before it fades to magenta, and the CD title doesn't work.

Other than that, I used "skill" to get the BPM and gap. No problem there.

Anything I can do to get these titles to work? Might it because they are a pixel too large or something? They are .png files.

Did you remember to put a .dwi and/or .sm file in the folder?

peepsluvr, if you mean the helper character seen on beginner mode in the arcade, that is an option you can turn on and off in your settings. I'd check that first. (Might be under appearance or something.) I don't like that guy so I haven't tried it, but you may need to download one first. Not sure.

Otsaika, like AMxJM said, you have to have a .dwi file or .sm file in the folder before you try to edit steps for it. You can't just make a new step chart for a song from scratch using only SM.

Now my question. Does anyone in these expansive forums know how to make characters for SM? Does it take a special program, and if so what is it / where can I get it? Also, assuming you've made a functional character before, could you give me any pointers?

Thanks,
~Tech.

You need to click the "Arrow freezes/BMP shifts" link in the main window. Its pretty self-explanatory.

My question: How can I separate the music from a video so that I can use the music to make a DWI and have the video playing in the background? I know Acid 4.0 can do it, but I don't want to pay $300 just to use it once.

Ok, now that I got that figured out, (I used Windows Movie Maker) I need to convert a .wma (windows media auido file) into an .mp3 or .wav or .ogg. Any help?

I've got the BPM and Offset (perfectly) but I still need to know one thing- how do I add a banner? I have a background, but no banner.

I managed to figure out how to change the format (without any help from anyone on these forums again) and now I hit one more problem (not that I'm expecting any help anymore disturb.gif )

How can I get a video file to play in the background?

Are you using Stepmania? If so, when you're going to edit your song, hit Escape to pull up one of the menus (the one you'd normally use to save) and find "Add/Edit BG Changes" or something to that effect. Be sure to line it up to where you want to implement the BG change at first, though. If you need any further help, just ask.

Thanks for the help. I actually added the movie as the result of a bug in Stepmania, but it's good to know how to do it the right way for future reference. E4.gif

To make the movie sync up properly, I changed the offset to 0, added a short pause in the beginning to make the steps sync, and left a large space between the beginning and where I would normally have the steps begin. Nobody would notice the pause, but is there an easier way to do this? (This is for future reference, not a priority.)

Yes, I know I have a lot of questions. This is the last one, I promise. (probably not E15.gif )

out of curiosity, how do you make steps in notepad? I mean I dont understand the numbers for one- but I mean how do you make it go to a song if you're just typin stuff in notepad?

The one song i made i recorded it in the editor, and went through it fine tuning each part- but I just needed some kind of base

There has to be an easier way to learn how to make your own simfiles. All these different posts on ...this way and that way and..forget that way its this way....Its crazy. There has to be a way to just drag a mp3 into some software. Diagram it to keep what you want of it. The put it into another program and make steps to it....That sounds easy to me

Two ways:

1. You put the .sm file and the MP3 in a directory together... when Stepmania reads a .sm file that doesn't specify an MP3 (or other music file), it will assume that the MP3 in the directory with the .sm is the correct one.

2. You explicitly point the .sm file at the MP3, using the #MUSIC tag in the .sm file, i.e. a line like this:

#MUSIC:bag.mp3;

That'll tell Stepmania to look for a file called "bag.mp3" in the same directory as the .sm file. You can also specify a full directory path in order to have it use an MP3 that's somewhere else on your computer.

If you don't include a #MUSIC tag, or if your #MUSIC tag points to a file that isn't there, Stepmania will revert to looking method #1, looking for a music file in the same directory as the .sm file.

As for "don't understand the numbers"... that's not too complicated either. Just look at this:

1000
0000
0100
0000
,
0100
0100
0000
0010
,

Those are a couple of measures from the Beginner steps to Bag. Four columns -- gee, just like the ones on the screen when you're playing. 1's are arrows, 0's are nothing. The comma seperates measures. There are four beats per measure. Put four lines in a measure if you only need quarter (on-beat) steps. Put eight lines in a measure if you need to specify eighth steps (halfway between beats). There are numbers other than 1's that you can use to start and end freezes, to put in mines, etc., but that's the basics.

Getting the steps to match up with the beat of the song is a tricky part... that's why you have to specify the #BPMS and #OFFSET tags in the .sm. If the Offset is perfect but the BPM isn't exactly right, the song might start out properly synced but the steps will gradually lose sync with the audible beat over time. If the BPM is perfect but the Offset isn't exactly right, then all of the steps will be equally out-of-sync with the audible beat.

From Notepad. You type it.

Here's a basic sample:

#TITLE:Bag;
#ARTIST:RevenG;
#OFFSET:-0.273;
#BPMS:0.000=65.000;

#NOTES:
dance-single:
MANIAC:
hard:
10:
0000
0000
0000
0000
,;

That's a really basic simfile for the song Bag (Heavy steps only)... leaving out all the steps after the first measure because it's really, really long. But other than putting in the actual steps, that's really all a simfile needs. Put the .sm file in a directory along with the MP3, the banner, and background image, and Stepmania will automatically figure them out...you don't actually have to specify them in the .sm file, but you can if you want to.

A worthy bump I hope.

When I play my edit steps in SM, the grading screen doesn't show up after the song is over 20 seconds later. When I make my steps in the editor, I go over a few extra measures after the song by accident, but never put any arrows on. Can someone help me with this noobish problem. Please!?

EDIT:Never mind, I figured it out.
