Even though I don't even play PIU, only DDR...
...the no-bar rule sucks.
If they didn't want the bar to be used it never should have been put on the machine in the first place. This will cause the most horrible thing ever -- a nationwide precedent where other tournaments will disallow bar use because this one did.
The only way to even possibly counter this is to have DDR or ITG follow suit and do a worldwide tournament but allow the bar. _________________

Sounds like someone over at Andamiro has been reading The 10K Commotion.
Seriously though, that's an AWESOME idea. I hope there's some way to get footage from it. _________________

I've noticed that some DDR machines I've seen now have signs that say something like: the bar is intended as a safety device. I'm not sure if this is an arcade operator thing, or something that Konami asked arcade operators to do.
Either way, I interpret those signs as meaning that they intended it as a grab bar when balance fails simply to prevent falling, rather than something to use for the entire song.
For the tournament, it will, of course, need clarification as to whether they mean no touching the bar period, or no holding the bar for an extended period of time.
And do I use the bar? Rarely, but sometimes I do when playing double and crossing from 1P to 2P or 2P to 1P at any difficulty level. But I also know I'm no champion at any of these dance games--DDR, ITG, or PIU--so I'm not entering tournaments either.
So, while I don't have any opinion as to whether or not players use the bar for normal gameplay, if someone sponsors a tournament, whatever rules they want to impose (1x only, no bar, etc.) are theirs to choose. That said, they also risk losing participants if the rules are too unfavorable to a large enough base of players. |

That's precisely what I thought too as soon as I saw that $8,000 prize...

Will the community likely be getting together and forming teams to train and do stuff, or will it just be a "whoever shows up and rocks gets to go"?
I don't post or pay attention much on the forums, even less for PIU. But I was interested in competing in the freestyle portion.
Any tips on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated!

According to the site:
Quote: | * The last 32~8 players :
Crazy Mode
* Semifinal & Final :
Night Mare Mode
* Rules : No holding the bar |
This applies to the WHOLE tournament, unless stated there are exceptions or specifications. Other than that, seems to me that it's the whole tournament.

I would assume that touching the bar is somewhat accepted to an extent. If holding the bar for more than a second, I don't think they would allow it. "No holding the bar" and "Bar disallowed" are 2 different things, but if 100% bar restriction does occur, why wouldn't they just remove it for the entire event?

True. While many may have complaints, they are also responsible for the rules as well. Constructive criticism from the players that support their game are taken professionally from Andamiro, but they also have the right to choose whether or not to accept this or that based on their judgment. Such an event does cost a lot of money to host, and having a ruleset that the majority unfavors could lead to a huge loss of investment. _________________

Awesome, this finally got posted up.
Actually worldwide Pump comps are nothing new, there were several last year and a big event has just finished in Mexico.
Hope this helps extends the life of dance games for a while longer. _________________

Obviously Andamiro is looking for the best PIU players in the world. Obviously one aspect of being a good player is stamina. If you have enough stamina, you don't need the bar. Therefore it follows that the best players shouldn't need the bar. Sure, it can help, but would anyone here debate that someone claiming they're the best shouldn't need the bar?
I only use the bar on the 10s (sakura and bag excluded), and that's because I don't have the stamina to get through them without it...yet. I don't claim to be a top-tier player, but if I did, I'd make sure I was able to clear everything in the game without touching the bar. Is it OK to use the bar? That's up to you--it's your choice and yours entirely. But this is a competition to see who's the best in the world, not a friendly little game.
BTW, most of the hardcore tournament divisions I've seen have the bars removed from the machine completely. This is because they're a test of stamina, and the bar has no place in that.
My bottom line: the best players shouldn't need the bar, therefore, this is a non-issue for a world tournament.

I don't know about the bar being removed completely.
I'm the same with yyr on using the bar, except I CAN pass everything without the bar...but I'm completely shot for pretty much anything else right after. My stamina is garbage now (I blame my age), and whenever I feel like playing 10-footers (or higher level CZ songs on PIU), I don't like to destroy myself just because of one song.
But for tournaments, I think it's a fair rule, considering there are people out there who can do stuff like Slam CZ, Dignity CZ without the bar (although I still want to see videoes).
But the bar should still be there as a safety check regardless. Who knows how slippery the pads might be? Even if you clean off the pads before the song, dirt/dust can build up during the song; by the end you might still end up playing slip 'n slide. _________________

Concerning the bar issue, for someone who has never seen the game before and looks on from a distance, it looks strange enough to have someone standing there and vibrating without using the bar. Having someone standing there, vibrating, and leaning back with their arms on the bar is really too much and it's no wonder why some people are turned off by dance games in general...they think something like..."you want me to look like THAT?!"...so from a recruiting standpoint in terms of extending the "life" of dance games, it's a great decision to limit the bar usage in this tournament.
It's also interesting to see that no one is really talking about the Freestyle aspect of this tourney even though that's what will catch peoples' attention who aren't familiar with the game. |

That's because freestyle is never controversial. Bar usage almost always is. _________________

Freestyle itself isn't really a critically big issue compared to Perfect attack. Basically, Freestyle is what you come up with in general without the worries of restrictions. Perfect attack, however, has to deal with more critical issues like pad uncomfortability (the 'pad-error' or the way the pads/machine distance are positioned), use of modifiers (some like and some hate), the bar and no bar issue (as stated on this tourney), the higher level of competition compared to Freestyle (more people = possibly more problems), and results (every # counts). _________________

Seeing as CJ is one of the US representatives I'm willing to bet he has his hands on a more complete list of rules than what we have avalabile. |
