I bought a Beatmania ripoff.
A handheld-version.
From a convenience store.
all five keys in the middle, the record, surrounding the five keys in the center.
It's titled "Dj Chaos". It has very few songs, and they all suck, but it was still kinda cool. Same basic premise of Beatmania...
...Does anyone know of this game or know where it came from? _________________

I actually saw one of those in a JCPenney Christmas catalog about... I dunno, 2 or 3 years ago, maybe longer. It was the same thing, with the keys in the middle surrounded by the "turntable" for lack of a better word. I want to say the one I saw also had the MTV brand on it, and thus some unbelievably crappy songs on it. Oddly enough, I think that catalog also had a pocket Pop'n Music ripoff.
Anyway, I managed to find a picture of it here:
http://www.evg2000.com/html/handheld.htm
It's number 285 on the list, and it has a picture of it. According to the package, it's made by MGA, a company that, if my memory serves me correctly, is best known nowadays for making those hideous Bratz dolls. Anyway, DJ Chaos looks pretty much like the one I saw except the one I saw wasn't as gaudy. I think it was black and silver.
They also have the Pop'n Music ripoff on there, it's called Hip Hop Music and it only has 8 of the 9 buttons Pop'n Music originally had. It's number 476 on the list if you want to see it. |

Like this? I dug that up at Value City for $5 one day. It's the only one I've ever run across.

Whoa, that game was in the catalog IIRC as well, but the obvious Beatmania ripoff wasn't like that, it was more like this thing here, just colored differently.
On a side note, how on earth do you play that thing (Tracktrix)? I see the Beatmania-style screen, but there only seem to be a couple of buttons on the casing. |

Those 5 things that look like little knobs are actually the buttons. It's a little awkward, as you can imagine. Heh.
