I got myself into DDR around last July or something. I saw some of my friends playing it last time I went to the Southland, back in the day, but I didn't want to play it in public, so I got DDRMAX and started at home. |

My friend James. How? We were at our cast party for the play we just finished up. He brought along his Ultramix 1 and, well, ever since December 2003 i've been nothing BUT a "DDR freak"
Thanks James _________________

No one really got me into it per say. I just saw these people playing at the arcade and it looked pretty fun so I gave it a shot. This happened like in mid/late 2001. |

A fat guy named Wingo got me into it when me and a couple friends were at his house. We played it as a joke but then became addicted. I bought the Extreme bundle (I wouldn't recommend it) back in October last year and have been playing ever since. _________________

The summer of 2003 I was at Ocean City, exploring the boardwalk. There's an arcade down by Thrasher's fries, and we passed a large crowd of people around two guys playing on heavy mode. By the time I took a spot in the crowd they were playing Exotic Ethnic. After they stepped off the machine, I began chatting with one of them and he proceeded to tell me that he was good because he had virtually no life. Anyways, the players left, and so did the crowd-- so I gave the machine a try. Only I had no idea what I was doing and failed miserably on my first try. After that day, I became determined to become as good as they were, and I'm still striving towards that goal. The end... _________________

A few years ago someone brought... I think MAX2 over to my house... I liked it... then got Ultramix a month after it came out. I got pretty good within a few months and have been tuning my skills ever since.
Never been to an arcade... |

I forget how many times I actually told the story of how I got into DDR. Well ... I guess one more time wouldn't hurt hehe.
In Summer of 1999, while staying @ the Circus Circus, I came across this large arcade machine with a stage, bars, and bright pink lights. I thought nothing of it, and continued to walk on with my family.
In Fall of 1999, I was a freshman living on campus @ Cal Poly Pomona. In the cafeteria they always played music videos all day long.
While I was eating lunch there one day, I noticed a video by Everything But The Girl called "Five Fathoms." The video was filmed in an arcade in the UK where they had Beatmania & DDR (aka. Dancing Stage).
I became intrigued by the music video not only for the music, but for the visuals of people playing on that same machine that I had seen months earlier in Las Vegas (I was interested in the people playing Beatmania too hehe).
Winter break came about, and I was lucky to have an older brother at that time. He gave me a CD-Rom with a PC version of Beatmania (BM98) and DDR (Delight Delight Reduplication) from his friend who went to Hong Kong.
So I'd play the games on the computer, not realizing that for DDR I had to use my feet to play the game. I would learn that later.
Months would go by, and by April 2000, I hadn't even thought about DDR. I actually stopped playing the Hong Kong simulators back in February. But later in the month of April my boyfriend sent me a video of his bro and him playing DDR at their local arcade. I became very intrigued at the game. I recognized the songs they were playing from the simulator (i.e., Boom Boom Dollar, Butterfly, B2U, etc.) and that was the first time that I saw someone actually play those songs on a machine.
So I made it a goal for myself to actually try the machine one day. In June 2000, my bro Brian, his friend Merrick, and I headed to the Block in Orange to go to the Gameworks there (now PowerHouse of Orange). Ironically, DDR was the game of the day, so I just sat there with my bro and his friend watching these random people play the employee for time cards. This was the first time I'd see the machine in person. I was astounded by some of the skill of those people, as well as the skill of the worker. I knew at that time that I had to play. Unfortunately, we all had to leave (and I have no money), so I'd have to play another day.
Finally on July 28, 2000 I had the opportunity to play DDR for myself at the arcade. My friend was having a birthday party @ the Camelot in Anaheim, CA. They had the good ol' 1.5 mix just sitting there at the bottom of the stairs. I told all of my friends that I was going to try out the game for the first time that night. But first we played a game of laser tag (where I got my arse whooped majorly). After the game, my legs were DEAD, but I still made sure to have enough energy to play DDR.
I put my coins in the machine, and I picked my first song ... BUTTERFLY. I remembered that this was my favorite song from the simulator. As soon as the song started, I couldn't work my feet with the arrows, and I quickly failed. Undaunted, I changed another dollar, and tried again.
This time I tried Have You Never Been Mellow. I PASSED it with flying colors. For the 2nd stage I picked Boom Boom Dollar. That song seemed easier than the first one, and I passed with no problems whatsoever. Then the last song came up ... and I tried BUTTERFLY once again ... and once again I FAILED! I just couldn't hang with the pattern.
I went home satisfied knowing that I tried my best on the DDR machine for the first time in the arcade.
... and here I am now. It's going to be about 5 years in July that I've been playing this game, and I'm still going strong. I have lessened the amount of times I play the game a week though. In 2001-2002 I probably played several hours every day of the week ... to now where I only play on the weekends a few times each day.
That's it ... hope you liked my story. L8z!

Who: Matt Wagener
When: 5 months ago
Where: After we saw Resident Evil:Apocalypse, he heard the music and could tell what mix it was so we went and I tried. Now I'm super good and can actually play next to him now without feeling stupid. |
