That can happen. But when you go back to the song selection screen, it should come up as an A. If not, it might just be a general bug.

A random screen shot. I made a 10 song oni course with 10066 steps in (Couldn't get 10000 frown.gif ) And this is the result of my first attempt.

Its an okayish result, but I made daft mistakes near the end of the course.
1) Cartoon Heroes Long Version (A warm up level E15.gif , FCed)
2) Burning Heat (Full Option Mix) (Just cause I like the song. FCed)
3) Max 300 Gabber Mix (FCed)
4) Beethoven Unleashed V3 (Messed up the stream of 8ths in the middle)
5) P8107 (F**ked it up disgust.gif )
6) Gravity (Didn't do too well)
7) Tainted Lovers (2 goods 4 greats and a NG goog.gif)
8) (Eggmans) Quaser (FCed)
9) Canon-D (1 miss disgust.gif )
10) Forever (A complete disaster erm.gif )

I'm thinking about making a 25000 step course so if anyone has any ideas of good, high voltage, songs. tell me! (Im not sure about Eruption. I'm trying to pick songs which a possible to full combo and I havnt seen an FC yet on it.)

If you want E1.gif . I'm a bit crap at making banners and backgrounds for stepmania. I'm more of a gfx editor than a "make from scratch" person. Haven't got much creativity.

After experimenting with the music rate mod, I came up with a rather spiffy nonstop course.

Paranoia Survivor, 1.3x music
Max 300, 1.3x music
Sakura, 1.5x music
The legend of MAX, 1.2x music
MaxX Unlimited, 1.3x music

Naturally, depending on your skill, you can modify the mods as you see fit. This one definitely helped improve my finger speed, as well as my ability to read fast notes. Give it a try!
