Awesome freestyle move:

During a song that has a break in the action (you know, a couple arrows seperate from the rest of the continuous pattern), drop to your knees, line your forehead up with a panel, and smash your head against it.

Repeat.

The crowd will love it (lol).

Yeah. Before you start Freestyling you have to feel comfortable with the arrows and pass songs.

2) When did you start FS'ing, PA skill wise? After you could do heavy songs? As soon as you felt like it? Because right now I'm still doing 4-5 footers on standard, but I know I want to FS eventually. How long should I wait?

i started afte I could pass just about all trick songs on Konamix. and after seeing Hyperbroken's Butterfly years ago.but I wasn't really good until I was passing all the heavy songs.I suggest playing a bunch of easy heavy songs then advancing.

3) Up here in good old Oshawa, Ontario, I've never seen anyone attempt any FS'ing, meaning when I start, I'm going to have no one to get advice from. Did you guys teach yourselves? Or did you learn by watching? Or did someone actually teach you?

I had a different style form everyone. So I had to train myself in freestyling. Read the guides. Watch hella videos. Depending on your style watch the appropriate dancers.

4) When you guys do FS, what difficulty are you playing on?

Always Light. Maybe Trick on little sometimes.I don't do beginner cause it's not on all mixes,

Quote:
5) My main question... when I do decide to start FS'ing, how do I start? Should I start with certain moves or on certain songs?

Feel comfortable with the arrows first. Pass some heavy songs first. Then feel comfortable with moving your arms. It's really hard to start but you'll get used to it.Starting to freestyle isn't as competitive or respected as before. Which is kinda good for beginners. There are no legends making you feel bad and not many participatiers anymore. Remeber Captain Canada's Improv? 1st Place. You don't need to try as hard. And an EXCELLENT routine will get you woshipped Hell that's exactly why I was worshipped at CMS biggrin.gif

Saw some guy FS at a local arcade and got interested and i also watched a couple of vids

For singles: Light or Heavy Little. For Doubles: Light Little or Standard Little.

Whenever, whereever. You should get familiar with the songs first then start of with the basic footwork when FSing biggrin.gif

So, I'm attempting to freestyle .59 on doubles, I got the arrows nearly memorized, I'm just looking for some moves, because at the moment I'm just spinning around really, and I look like a ballerina. Any suggestions?

Also looking for a good light song to do with another person? Suggestions again?

seen it done in a "gauntlet" routine, where the FSer basically tried to hurt himself as much as he could while hitting the arrows.

part of freestyling is coming up with your own material. if you cant come up with your own stuff, you will never amount to anything, and im not just talkin about ddr either.

i have an idea: while you're on the pad--hit the arrows while dancing. dont say you're not good at dancing, either. everyone can DANCE, techniques get a bit complicated though...

suggestion: take all the tips from these 50+ pages and expand on them. why give a man a fish when you can teach him to catch his own? use the TIPS to make your own stuff. being a sheep wont get you far in the FS world.

Nope, started dancing before i got to trick level songs.

Ummm, around 6 foot. Do it when you want to do it. I mean, you might fail songs if you don't pay attention to the arrows enough,. That still happens to me every so often. Concentrating too much on moves and not on the arrows.

I have a long history in bboying (aka breakdancing), so knee drops and hand plants were a breeze. I guess you could say i taught myself. I thought I was the shizzle untill I saw the videos on here.

Light for the most part. Depends on the song. Get up n Move Standard Little is nice, also Groove 2001 standard little. But those are almost the same as light.

Just do it. Don't think, just do. Dance Dance Dance. Well, move your arms. At least sway them. In constant motion. Even when playing PA. I sway my arms when I PA. Even tho I suck at PA. I don't feel right not actually moving to the music.

Hey guys, I've been reading the stuff on FS'ing lately (including Captain Canada's two recent threads), and I got some quick questions about it.
First off,
1)Did you FS'ers start off PA'ing? I'm going to assume most did, so that will lead into:

I wasn't PA'ing, so to speak. Moreso, I was just learning to PASS songs. Never got into PA until maybe 6 months after getting into FS.

I was beating stuff up to 6-7 feet when I got into FS. That was the higher end songs on DDR 1.5 Trick-mode (like Paranoia, Trip Machine, Boom Boom Dollar)

So long as you feel comfortable with a certain step pattern, go bananas and start grooving to it.

I FS'ed about 4 months into the game. I beat Paranoia Maniac in 6 months. That's a rough timetable you can draw upon.

Mostly learned from Japanese DDR vids (Koshiru, Osmin, Brilliant Steppers, Yoshi (of d-ash))... As far as moves, drew upon previous dance experience and music vids.

Tenshanhan wrote:

Usually, Basic/Little + Mirror. I'm not big on anything past quarter notes. Single/Double, depends on the song. I use Mirror because this is how I prepare for a routine: Print out the step chart, choreograph something to arrow pattern, then memorize it and then Mirror it so I'm always facing the audience.

Tenshanhan wrote:

The first fundamental thing is working on footwork and timing with the arrows. You've gotta' be able to pass a song before you can FS it. So working with your legs is probably the best fundamental to start with. From there, work your upper body into the mix, if need be. Once you have those down pat, then you hafta' learn to face the audience as much as possible when doing it to make for a great presentation. From there, you can work on power moves or whatever's clever.

Hope that helps!

you're probably referring to Frozen Ray, steps are 3 sets (on beat, off beat, on beat)

other heavy songs with spins include (but are not limited to): paranoia (original), trip machine (original, and some mixes), HVAM, Daikenkai heavy and oni, and lots more.

remember that you can make "spins" out of almost any steps as long as you know how to position yourself.

1)Did you FS'ers start off PA'ing? I'm going to assume most did, so that will lead into:

Not exactly what I would call PA'ing, but basically working my way up in the game. I was able to do most Standard Songs and a few Heavy's

2) When did you start FS'ing, PA skill wise? After you could do heavy songs? As soon as you felt like it? Because right now I'm still doing 4-5 footers on standard, but I know I want to FS eventually. How long should I wait?

Basically, you can start whenever you want. But your going to want to FS some songs on Standard to. So I'd get most of them down.

3) Up here in good old Oshawa, Ontario, I've never seen anyone attempt any FS'ing, meaning when I start, I'm going to have no one to get advice from. Did you guys teach yourselves? Or did you learn by watching? Or did someone actually teach you?

Since no one has any Idea what FS is up there, that's an advantage. I watched the ever so famous, Dynamite Rave video (I regret learning FS from that after seeing the Top 50 list) and I just copied some things for my first routine. No one can really teach you FS. You just do what you want.

4) When you guys do FS, what difficulty are you playing on?

Ummm....for my routines I have: Heavy: 1 Standard:2 Light:4
Basically, find a song you really like and you just feel like dancing to (without the pad) and then you could probably make a routine to it. I suggest looking on Light for most songs and Standard for some. My Heavy song is always on Stealth, so don't approach those until you can turn on Stealth.

5) My main question... when I do decide to start FS'ing, how do I start? Should I start with certain moves or on certain songs?

If your into the whole Knee Drop, Hand Slap scene, play Dynamite Rave on Light or Twilight Zone on Standard.

If you wan't some of my Video's just PM me and you can check 'em out. Once you get into it, you'll be doing it constantly. I'm glad to see some people curious to starting FS. All I can say is, don't be afraid to go all out. You may look stupid, but you'll have a great time doing it. Good Luck!

Oooo! Questionaire!

1)Did you FS'ers start off PA'ing? I'm going to assume most did, so that will lead into:

I started freestyling after only a few games of DDR. The first Socal Tournament (grr...where was that at?) had just finished and their were vids up on DDRfreak. I watched a couple of the routines, and was totally astounded by the whole idea. My friend and I started practicing freestyling on Boom Boom Dollar and other 1.5 mix songs right away.

2) When did you start FS'ing, PA skill wise? After you could do heavy songs? As soon as you felt like it? Because right now I'm still doing 4-5 footers on standard, but I know I want to FS eventually. How long should I wait?

Like I said, I could pass maybe 4 foot songs before starting to Freestyle. It was great fun back then too, since it was new and everyone would stand around watching in awe, even at the most simple tricks.

3) Up here in good old Oshawa, Ontario, I've never seen anyone attempt any FS'ing, meaning when I start, I'm going to have no one to get advice from. Did you guys teach yourselves? Or did you learn by watching? Or did someone actually teach you?

I learned from watching videos mostly. At the time videos consisted of A-team and US players emulating A-team...and the Unique Mr. Goggles. As time went on, I eventually learned some things on my own, and learned from my friends who would often freestyle with me. When I first started playing we had 5-6 regulars at our arcade who would feestyle.

4) When you guys do FS, what difficulty are you playing on?

At the beginning, basic, then eveutally trick and maniac (up to 7 or 8 foot songs). However, as time passed, I went back to basic songs because they gave me more liberty to move around, especially basic doubles.

5) My main question... when I do decide to start FS'ing, how do I start? Should I start with certain moves or on certain songs?

*shrug* I say the main goal of freestyling is to do something enjoyable that doesn't look grossly awkward. Start with whatever songs feel good for you to play. I really hate songs with jumps...I still can't figure out what to do for the life of me...other's though seem to do quite well. I figure, try every song you feel the urge to try and you'll learn after that about your own likes/dislikes, ect.

Oh yeah. Edits with nothing on it. E1.gif but some places there's those kids that go. "Oh he just missed an arrow" while you're freestyling crank the speed mod all the way up like Hypnotikz does. If they're still watching the screen and not you put it on stealth.
