I don't think it's a question of legality. Your US PS2 is your property. You bought it. That unit doesn't belong to Sony anymore. They sold it to you through a proxy. You can do anything you want with it, so far as it doesn't infringe on the rights of someone else. If you modify it with a fliptop or a modchip, that voids the warranty contract that Sony gave you when you bought their item, so they won't take responsibility for anything that goes wrong with your PS2, even if it has nothing to do with the modifications you made on it.
However, if your dad is willing to get you a Japanese PS2, take it! It's that much easier to just load your game in the disc tray and be ready to go instantly. I have a fliptop on my PS2, and although it works flawlessly, it gets annoying to keep having to switch discs back and forth (several times a day) every time I want to sneak in a half hour or so of IIDX. _________________

Hey. I have a SCPH-30001 PS2, and it doesn't have a flip open top, it has the slide out kinda thing... I want to be able to play import games, but I'm not sure how to go about doing this? Do I have to use a modchip, or can I use a slide card or something? I would prefer something that doesn't need to be installed internally. Can anyone gimme some help? I've been looking around at everything and I just don't know what I'm doing. Thanks. |

The original poster really needs to get a better link in the first page, PS2Cover has nothing but bad reviews and there ARE better sites to get the cover from, such as www.ps2fliptop.net (I haven't tried it but the feedback is better than Ps2cover.com who ship your order 3 years after you order it) |

usa swap magic. your ps2 won't be able to play the jap sm, else you wouldn't really need it to play japanese games in the first place _________________

I'm still waiting for mine I ordered back on January 22nd. I have been using HD Advance 2.0 but I don't know if it is going to work with Beatmania 9th style. I get paid friday I am going to order it and a controler. HD Advance does seem to work pretty well for myself and my friend we have yet to find a game that we couldn't get to work.
Off topic anyone have an idea how much it costs to ship the controler? |

is there anyone who HAS gotten their fliptop ordered from PS2cover.com? I'm interested because I ordered the god damn thing a day before I found an assload of bad feedback.
Edit: I emailed them asking if they would cancel my order and they said they would. I would have maybe just waited except they gave me a story about a bad shipment (everyone seems to get a different story) so I'm gonna try to find a better way to get a fliptop. any ideas?

has anyone ordered a SlimTool from www.divineo.net before? I recently ordered one and then stumbled upon their forums, where many users had reported that they did not receive a SlimTool in the mail, but received a MagicSwitch instead. This troubles me because MagicSwitches suck terribly and SlimTools kick buttocks. If anyone knows anything about this, please share |

Well I just tested the cracked USBExtreme floating on the internet, and I'm just going to say it's the biggest piece of crap I've ever used.
The loading times for DDR Extreme are worse than playing it on the ps2's DVD Drive. _________________

Hello, I have recently ordered the DDR games for my PS2. They are all in the japanese version. Well, my current playstation is busted with the unending DRE errors, so I'm going to be getting a PS2 slim really soon. But now I realize I have to have *something* so I can play the Japanese import games on the playstation2 slim. I've been looking around and have found some Magic Swap CD's on eBay (V 3.6) and according to the advertisement, that and the "magic" switch that comes with it is all I need. But after trying to read some of the posts on this thread, I'm under the impression that you have to have the swapmagic AND a fliptop. Is that really nessecary? The eBay page doesn't make it sound like you need any extra accessories to play the import game.. Just was wondering. I want to be able to play these games by monday(thinking of shipping times, etc), so I need to figure out the best/cheapest way to go about this...
So Slim PS2 + IMPORT DDRMAX-DDREXTREME + OTHERS = HAPPY FUN DANCING
Now what's the what do I need in place of others? What's the best way to about it without modding(Internally and possibly without modding the exterior)? Many thanks in advance!!
Does the slim tool eliminate the need for the fliptop?
I'm really clueless as to what is actually needed. |

If you are getting a new slim model PS2, then you do NOT need to buy a fliptop cover. However, you will need to modify your slim PS2 so that the sensor that detects whether or not the disc tray lid is open is disabled. There are topics about how to perform this procedure around, as I don't know what to do specifically offhand. It shouldn't be too complicated, though. Once you have that done, then yes, all you should have to do is boot up your slim PS2 with the proper Swap Magic disc and then switch it out for the import game of your choice. _________________

What are my options for running an original 3rd Mix on a US Playstation without getting a modchip? I read the thing about patching, but am not sure that will help. I have access to a Gameshark CD, if that makes any difference. The boot disk sounds appealing, but you mention someting about having to enter codes, and I didn't quite understand that. Thanks. _________________

You can use a boot disc on a Playstation to play imports. All you need to do is mod your PS so that it can't detect if the disc cover is open, and you're free to swap. Check around for directions on how to safely mod either an orignal PS or the PSOne to this effect. Yes, for most imports you will also need an "unlock" code to bypass the software lockout on later games. If you use a boot disc like PSX-change 2, it includes software that lets you enter the unlock code before you boot your import disc, negating the need for a Gameshark or other peripheral. _________________

How do I patch my games?
I have 3rd, 4th, and 5th, and I'm getting tired of having to type in the anti-mod codes, then having my 3rd mix screw up. Also my 5th mix won't work at all.
I was wondering if it would be worht my time to patch all 3 games and use them with my flip-top.
One more question: If I do patch my 3 games, will I need the anit-mod codes to load them? I know you have to have a boot disk, though. |
