Here's the problem that I think a lot of people have...I had it too until I changed my regimen, but by no means did I solely use DDR to lose weight.
You should do one hour straight, with one or two breaks for water. You can't do a 3 set song and spend a minute or two selecting a song. Do Endless mode, or Workout mode with 1 hour goal, etc. The point is not to have 'downtime'. I read that you need to exercise at a certain % so that your fat can do it's job for your muscles and body. Check out this article:
http://www.fitnessworld.com/FM/tmpl/genPage.asp?p=/information/articles/library/nutrition/fat1201.html
What I also did was cut out pop. During breaks and such I would drink pop. Sure this was a really short term way to quench thirst, but it had a lot of sugar and stuff. So any work I did was lost when I swigged a pop. Instead, I now drink water and/or some kind of citrus juice (grapefruit, orange juice, etc.)
Last October is when I realized I was being absolutely DUMB about the whole weight loss thing and buckled down. I started out at 255 lbs and I am now down to 210 lbs. I know it doesn't seem like a lot, but remember that you will probably gain some back and fluctuate. And yes, I eat a little healthier than I use to, but I still indulge in my favorites. The key is discipline and once you start losing weight, you'll be motivated. I know I was. I feel better and I have been having fun while doing it.
I'm just one person and you've probably heard a lot of this stuff before, but I thought I'd put in my 2 cents worth. If you have any questions PM me or e-mail me. _________________

[DDR really isn't all that great in exercise. Running can do the same and then some. |

muscle is heavier than fat - you may be losing fat and gaining muscle (DDR is a pretty heavy workout so I think thats not unlikely)
If you arent really changing shape then I guess thats not good though.

I think the big issue with not losing weight is from either not getting enough of a workout (e.g. Beginner mode when you can do Heavy mode) or overworking yourself (e.g. Heavy mode when you can only do Standard). The key, in my opinion, is to find a range where you're getting a challenge but are not burning out. From my personal experience, muscle mass comes from working hard for small periods of time. |

im 6' and i flux between 200 and 205. i enjoy the physical part of DDR when i play oni... it keeps you concetrated on your physical abilities as well as mental abilities... if you can play oni. im not trying to lose weight cuz im pretty much all muscle from basketball, but i am trying to cut somemore lines in my legs maybe, and my torso. the most important thing to getting fit is your diet. eat right. also, eat according to when you play, dont go play for 2 hours, then gorge down some fast food. eat a little something, then go play, then eat a little something else. that way you dont get cramps _________________

When I started playing DDR I was around 345 pounds. I didn't look super fat because I'm about 6 feet 8 inches tall. I went to the doctors last week and I'm down to 290. I started at a size 52 waist and now I can squeeze into a 42. I didn't change my eating habits so I know itâs not that. It's from playing a lot of DDR. A good two hours a day on standard/heavy. Can finally do songs like crash/holic and some other 8 footers now. |

i've been playing DDR for two years... one year consistantly, and i did lose a lot of weight when i played it consistantly.
i didn't change my eating habits and i was able to be 125 lbs at 5'8
then i got put on steriods and i gained like 10 lbs..
i'm still trying to lose that weight, but i don't play DDR enough to see results... i'm sure if i played for a good hour everyday that i would see them, but i don't have a lot of time with my homework.
i usually do mostly 9 footers... _________________

I've been playing for about a year and a half and I've lost 80 lbs. It works. I haven't changed my eating habits at all, I'm just more active. I usually try to play just 3 nights a week. At first when I started on light and standard modes I didn't lose any either, but don't let it discourage you. Once it starts coming off, man does it come off. Still working on knocking off about 40 more. Started at 315 and down to 235 right now.
Good luck! |

I agree, I was about 220 before I started playing summer of 2002...
I dropped to about 165 within 8 months of that, and have since bounced back up to 185, in what seems to 25 lbs of leg and butt muscle o.O

I'm 6'3", 165 lbs (a stick, as I usually say) and I have a hell of a hard time putting on weight, but I love this game so much, that I could care less. Anyway, I might not be the best person to give advice about this, but I think the big thing is, even if you play 8's, 9's, and 10's and difficult nonstop courses, etc. etc. If you're just going to eat high calorie foods, you're not going to get anywhere.
I have a friend who started playing DDR to lose weight and she says that she also had to give up a lot of foods IN ADDITION to playing DDR to lose weight. If you ARE eating healthier, then either play more or see your doctor. Ganbatte! |
