Nice try biggrin.gif
A lot of times he doesn't want to play... he's very fussy about pads. He doesn't want to be made to look bad. I wasn't even sure I was going to get him to play at PA last time.

Hi,

Now I can finally play decently again. My Cobalt Flux arrived today!!!

I was stuck playing only beginner level on my original pad. Tonight I played about half of the songs in Training mode on Light and my legs are like jelly. This like starting over. But hopefully I will get to Standard soon.

Question on systems...

Right now, I have a PS1, just having gotten into DDR. Keeping in mind the "older player", do you guys think a PS2 or Xbox upgrade would be in order down the road? I like the idea of the PS2 being able to play PS1 titles, but are the songs on the Xbox better/worse and are there advantages to one system over the other? Thanks!

I don't think it's an age-specific question... but my answer would be that the PS2 is a much better idea because Max and Max2 are the two best console games. It's up for debate whether Extreme or the Ultramixes are worse than the other, but they're way worse than Max and Max2. The other plus is that you also have the potential of importing Japanese PS2 mixes (such as Extreme, which is easily the best console version out there) if you mod or flip-top your machine.

Thanks for the thoughts, Slowpoke... the reason I posted here is that I was looking for recommendations from older players. Sorry, no offense intended.

No offense interpreted... I just meant that anyone who happened to be reading my post could take the advice generically, rather than assume it was just meant as "old persons' advice"

I own both X-box and PS2. If you can afford both you should definitely get both.

For DDR the PS2 is better. The interface and arrows are more like the arcade.

If you want to play DDR and RPG's then PS2 is better. If you want to play anything else X-box is better.

Thanks PBJ & ny*gate, I'm leaning towards the PS2 as DDR would be my main interest.

Hey, another question... do you guys notice a difference in response between pads? I mean, the same type of pad, but one is more/less sensitive in different areas. I had cheapo pads, but moved up to a better pad. It seems more responsive overall, but there are times... It's a bit frustrating when you "know" you hit the pad, but it doesn't register. (or maybe I am just that bad!)

Hi,

I think there is a different response depending on what type/brand of pad you have. I started with a really cheap Intec ($15 on sale) and that was fine to find out if I liked DDR. But it was very quirky, the underside started to bunch up and I was stepping in time but it was not responding. Due to the pads problems, I was stuck doing beginner songs. Anytime I tried Light, it acted up.

Now I have moved up in pads, way up. Once I loosened the screws on the Cobalt Flux, the only misses I am getting are due to my dancing and not the pads fault.

Thanks Costumer. I moved to the BNS DX pads and I liked the response initially, but maybe something has become loose.

Do you really like the Cobalt Flux (and are they noisy)?

I really do like my CF. As for noise, I play on a hardwood floor, but I put a rug/shelf liner thin pad under the CF. The only real noise depends on how hard the arrow panels are depressed. I think there is less noise now that with my soft pad because I was basically jumping on the floor with nothing to dampen the sound.

From what I have read and from seeing the CF, if there is a response problem due to dust and dirt getting into the pad, you can take the pad apart to clean it out.

Have fun dancing

BNS pad does have that problem. I went through 4 of them in 1 yr… disgust.gif
I use Red-Octane now and it’s been great. I love the surface texture too. I wish I could have CF but no room to put frown.gif

Well, I opened my BNS pad and found the problem (I think)... the foam pad that isolates the contacts had shifted. But it is sandwiched between two plastic sheets (which contain the wire traces). So I sliced in and got the pad moved and duct taped down ** BUT ** when I moved my hand out, the tape caught and ripped the plastic sheet across the trace, ruining the pad! frown.gif I did salvage the control box, so it looks like I'll be building a new pad sooner than I thought!

Heh, this is why i dont want to ever try and fix my pad. I'm just gonna let it die slowly. E15.gif

I suppose that's true, but the response from the left arrow was so erratic, it wasn't fun to play. I had a back up thin pad, so I can make do until I get the new one built.

Wow, I haven't been in here in a long time!

I am so thrilled to report that the kids have been back in school for a whole week and my sanity has finally returned. My mad skilz still haven't though; I sucked at the PA last weekend and since then have had 2 other bad days. But ya know what? They're just bad days. I'm still getting better. Soon I'll be up there with my idols, danburi, Slowpoke, Slowpoke Jr., nystargate and rampage. E4.gif

Guess what - I have an actual arcade game fixer-guy at my house even as I type working on my Scramble machine. Such a feeling of power - can I somehow bribe him to keep the pads working correctly on the bowling alley machine? It doesn't belong to the bowling alley, so they never care what condition it's in. But now, a personal contact...mwahahahaha

You have an actual arcade machine in your home? That's pretty cool!

I think I may be taking a DDR break this weekend. Remember a while back we dabbled with ITG a bit? This weekend we're planning on trying some PIU. This is gonna feel weird! boom.gif
