Im not a regular smoker but i started about 2 months ago and its doesn't really affect me. I also have a friend who i play ddr with and he smokes after about playing twice and then he goes back on playing. But i live in high altitude so i don't know if that has to do with anything E19.gif

As for quitting i can quit its just that im a social smoker so i don't do it very often unless im with someone who does. And your not really addicted to anything its just your mind saying that you need ths to live and it wants those feelings when you do do it.

So yea im not an addict <-- (not possible)
but it still don't affect me anyway

I don't smoke but here's a little something for all u who do:

OK, as we all know DDR is a great and fun way of getting exercise. Most people lose weight, burn calories, and feel healthier once they've really gotten into the game. Also, as we all know, smoking is bad for you. Sorry, but it's the truth. If DDR is making things better for your body, why ruin all the good things it's done by smoking? It just doesn't make sense.

Now I know quitting is a very hard thing to do, but if you try ard enough I'm sure you can do it.

To smoke, or not to smoke: that's your own choice and yours only, but think about what you need both physically and mentally.

That's all.
Please consider this.

But I guess it has to do with never doing a sport in my life I concider ddr a sport though

It starts social, then moves forward. When I started, I told myself it would stay social.. and it progressed.
Just be careful ok? erm.gif

When you started playing DDR were you a smoker at the moment?
No.
Once you finally got the hang of DDR did you notice that smoking had affected your health?
I started smoking during a time where I didn't play DDR, but when I started back, yes. That and I had gained alot of weight and was bad out of shape.
Did you quit smoking or reduce you smoking habits once you became a regular DDR player?
I quit after I found out I was pregnant.
If you had a choice between quitting Smoking or DDR which would you choose?
DDR, because quitting (even though you may not think so) is wonderful! After the withdrawl symptoms you realize that things smell and taste and that air is good.
Did your overall health improved once you quit DDR?
You mean once you quit smoking right? If so, yes.
If you are an active smoker do you smoke the same amount you used to before DDR?
----
Does smoking have an affect on your health in general towards DDR.
and the last question?
----

Are NonSmoking DDR Players Better than Players Who Smoke? this question though would be if both players were playing for a long lenght of time.
Your talent has nothing to do with smoking habits. If you've been smoking for a while the non-smoker may be able to play for a longer period of time w/o breaks, but the smoker could be more talented.

But, as a final note, if you are considering quitting, it is worth it. But for those of you who smoke and don't want to quit, never let non-smokers talk down to you about it. They have no clue what it's like so their opinion doesn't matter. E1.gif

When you started playing DDR were you a smoker at the moment? - Yes

one you finally got the hang of DDR did you notice that smoking had affected your health? - Not because of DDR, but in general, yes

did you quit smoking or reduce you smoking habits once you became a regular DDR player? - Diet, Exercise, and Smoking are all things I am changing right now, side by side. I chose DDR as a major source of my exercise because I had played it before and really liked it, plus I already owned alot of stuff to do it at home.

If you had a choice between quitting Smoking or DDR which would you choose? Smoking, that is one of my goals.

Did your overall health improved once you quit DDR? - I didn't quit DDR, but if you mean did it improve with DDR, yes, did it improve when I quit smoking, I haven't quit yet, but I am getting closer, and yes, I am able to go longer now that I smoke less. I think it is a combo of alot of practice and the lower smoking though. Stamina is building up.

If you are an active smoker do you smoke the same amount you used to before DDR? No, but that was a a concious decision, not a natural one through the course of playing DDR. Though DDR really helps keep my mind off of it. It burns energy and keeps me busy at night. I am still smoking at work though. =(

Does smoking have an affect on your health in general towards DDR. - I believe so, yes.

and the last question

Are NonSmoking DDR Players Better than Players Who Smoke? this question though would be if both players were playing for a long lenght of time. - I would give an edge to the non smoker, but this can't be definitive. If two players are at the same skill level, they are at the same skill level regardless of if the smoke or not. I would say that a smoker, who has strengthened their lungs through this kind of exercise would be able to keep up. Maybe not in the long haul though. As the smoker and non smoker age the smoker would probably be less and less able to maintain. This is just a guess though, I am not a doctor.

And since other people are offering quit smoking advice, this is my little rant on the subject...

Get a perscription for wellbutrin, use it for a month or so before you try to quit. It does help alot.

Use patches when you decide to quit. This is what I am doing.

Only quit when your ready, and if possible, try not to do it when you are under stress or pressure. This is one thing I am struggling with right now. I have alot of travel coming up and work and I am terrified of flying but have too, plus I am getting married in a month. I probably did not pick a great time to try, but at least I am trying, I am still smoking though (4 or 5 a day, non on weekends which is still better than what the pack or more a day I was at before). I do want to quit, but honestly, I am freaking out about other things in my life right now.

Avoid situations where you will want to smoke. For me these are boredom, large crowds, and when I drink. Most smokers will tell you that a Beer and a smoke is like chocolate and peanut butter. So I stay out of bars for the time being. Also my area now has a public smoking ban in place so that helps (Although I disagree with it on principle, a bar owner should be allowed to choose if he wants his patrons smoking or not, if you don't smoke, don't go where it is allowed.)

When you get an urge, get busy. At work I have no outlet, but at home I just plug in DDR and go for 3 hours at a stretch. When I am at home playing, I don't even think about smoking. Which currently is about the only time I don't sweat it.

One thing I did when I quit a few years ago and wasn't playing DDR heavily was I always kept a deck of my magic cards with me (although any cards will do). Part of the addiction, or habit, is just keeping your hands busy. I didn't realize that until i tried to quit. I would just pull out the cards and start shuffling anytime i had an urge.

Vitamin C is your friend. Orange juice orange juice orange juice. Smoking depletes your C, stock up.

Your gonna get sick. As bad as smoking is, it kills alot of stuff too. When you first quit, expect a week or two of hacking like no tomorrow. I am just now past this stage, stick it out. For you non smokers I know that will make no sense to you, shouldn't smoking cause the cough? Well it does, but when you quit, all that gunk WANTS OUT.

Hope this helps someone. =)

I had to post a response to this. I started when I was 12. I am 28 now. Think what you want, but I would bet a donut it will get you. If you can, honestly, stop even being social about it. It all starts somewhere. And trust me, it is very possible for you to be an addict, frankly your attitude about it really strikes me as a sign that you definatly are.

I don't want to preach (yeah I just did), but Quitting is hard as hell. Don't get snared if you don't have to. It is easy to listen to a smoker and label them a hypocrit, I can own that. But I wish (and I know alot of smokers would back this up) I had never started.

I sorta agree with Shuffle on this one. Plus, what you described is addiction, it is a mental thing, but you can't imagine how strong it is. I'm going to extend my comment about non-smokers not knowing to smokers who have never tried to quit as well. I didn't even think about that, but I felt the same way as you until I actually tried to quit. Then it was like... Well, have you seen the movie "Liar Liar" and the scene with the blue pen? laugh.gif It went something like that, but with a cigarette trying to jump in my mouth, not a pen trying to write on my face...
