So has anyone here picked up a copy of the newest in the Taiko no Tatusjin series, 5th generation?
Rate it, describe it's good/bad points, and how fun it is compared to the other Taiko no Tatsujin games. |

I've got Taiko no Tatsujin 3, 4, and 5 and Taiko Drum Master. These are my impressions:
TnT3:
-Lots of good songs, but a low song count overall (30+)
-Not nearly enough hard songs (I can beat every song on the hardest difficulty on my first try).
-The lower framerate and aliasing make this game look graphically inferior to the rest.
-It's the only Taiko game with noticable load times. Loading the song previews is painfully slow. This is a real problem, since all the song titles are in Japanese, so it's hard to remember which songs are which.
TnT4:
-Lots of good quality songs, like TnT3. (Katamari!)
-There's a decent song count (40+).
-Thanks to Oni mode, there are a number of challenging songs that I can't beat yet.
TnT5:
-Ugh, the song quality stinks. There are very few songs I really like. We get Sokabasu, but it's not performed Judy Mary, it's short, and the rhythms are not very fun. Overall, the songs are not as catchy as the other mixes
-The song count is pretty big. It started above 40 before getting any unlocks. I don't think I have all the songs yet.
-Plenty of challenging songs in Oni mode (I wish this came unlocked from the beginning).
TDM:
-With all the US licenses, the quality is hit or miss. Some are very fun (like Killer Queen, Toxic, ABC) and some are just awful (DBZ theme, Jimmy Neutron).
-The song count is too small. At 31, it's the smallest mix. Since you will only play 60% of the songs, they can get to be tiresome.
-The difficulty level is OK, but could be better. The Genji and Heike Clans is the only song I can't beat yet, but there are a number of 8 and 9 star songs which have good rhythms.
I haven't played much with the minigames, so I can't comment on those.
In summary, from best to worst:
Taiko no Tatsujin 4 (good all around)
Taiko Drum Master (needs more songs)
Taiko no Tatsujin 5 (needs better songs)
Taiko no Tatsujin 3 (needs more difficulty and technical improvements) |

i think #5 is better than all the other taiko games, but i only have 1, 3, and drum master.
goods:
45 songs
fun minigames
many challenging songs
bad:
there should be a new interphase
needs more songs - at least 50
nothing very new from the taiko series. |

I just picked up Taiko Drum Master tonight. I'm SO glad that I have a JPS2 so I can pick up the Japanese versions. So far I like what I've played on TDM, but yeah some songs I have no desire to play (THE FREAKING DBZ THEME? WHAT? WHAT?).
So...I assume they aren't cheap though. _________________

only the japenese drum. the red octane is decent but you need to be like hella strong after awhile to hit it for it actually registers. _________________

Buy the american game w/ controller and then order the imports. The crappy amer. game will keep you busy until the imports arrive (assuming you use the fastest shipping possible.) |

My Red Octane drum is considerably more sensitive than the Namco drum. I barely need to tap the RO to get it to register. Also, the RO doesn't have the dead zone down the middle that the Namco drum has. However, I think it may be starting to fail already (after 3 months). When I hit certain areas it will register as a double hit. Pulling up the rubber surface around the edges seems to fix the problem. The Namco drum also looks cooler and feels a little sturdier. Still, I would probably recommend the RO drum. That dead zone on the Namco drum is a real killer. |
