Some people absolutely have to use mods to play certain songs. So here is the question: "are they an easy way out?"

I learned on 5th mix with a soft pad and we all know that there are no speed mods or helper mods on 5th mix (except little mode which i really dislike)
What mix/version did you start playin with and what mods do you have to use?

well people who have been around since the beginning of DDR dont need mods cuz they are used to not having them.
me, i just use them to speed the song up, not that i cant read them
but there are some songs most people need to speed up. slow songs like orion the slow one, bag, my summer love, etc.

Quoted for emphasis, but just to answer the question, I started playing on 7th Mix, and I have to use 1.5x on most songs (with the exception of the faster songs, e.g. Max 300) and 2x on slower songs. And if I don’t use solo, it just looks weird. So 1.5x and solo for me usually. I don’t consider it ‘an easy way out,’ just an alternate way of playing that makes it easier for me to read the arrows. Everyone’s different.

for the most part, it's a personal preference. 1x is not optimal for the most of us (including myself who plays lots of 1x). i don't think it's necessarily an easy way out as i have never seen anyone with a massive drop in ability from mods to no mods.

i don't have a problem keeping this topic open as long as talk remains civilized (fat chance laugh.gif).

fulfilling the 'omg mods r 4 noobzzzz' requirement for this thread. but seriously, i use mods to death. even when theyre not really necessary. i can read everything but maxx and lom on 2x, and some songs like leading cyber i use 3x for the weird part in the middle(you know what i mean). i use solo too, because i remember learning and my friend was telling me "those 8th notes are in between the 4th notes" and i asked him how i could tell, and he said color, but regular notes change color, so i decided that was pretty lame. the majority of the time its 2x solo for me. i do enjoy 5th mix though, but thats more about songlist than the purity of the scrolling of the arrows goog.gif

i started playing on DDR USA, so im very versatile when it comes to speed mods, i dont have to use them, but i do most of the time, only time i dont is when i warm up in which i play a set of random, no speed mods, shuffle.

For some reason, the only song I HAVE to have mods on is Max 300. I just can't read those eighth notes coming that fast at me. 1.5X.

And I could do it otherwise, but Waka Laka becomes pretty annoying without mods.

The only songs i use mods on are really slow ones.I use speed mods as you may have guessed.I use 3x for Bag (heavy) which i still haven't passed, and 1.5 for anything else that is at or around one hundred bpm or less.I hate the little mod, that is an easy way out.Other then that i think most mods are there to help a little bit with reading arrows or making the song seem faster or harder and such.

I started playing when Extreme was already out for like, 1.5 years, so I started mods when I started DDR.

I admit that is very tough to play without 2x solo (except for really fast songs)... but I don't think its that big of a deal. I know I could still pass a song w/o mods, but I probably wouldn't do as well on it.

W/e though... people can choose whether or not they wanna use mods.... no biggie.

little and freeze off aren't really an easy way out since they hurt your score drastically. both seem pointless to me.

i like putting fast songs on 2x and 3x and slow songs regular. for some reason though, i cant do waka laka WITHOUT the speed mod. anything else i can do no mod, except that. stupid waka laka.

Except for rare exceptions like 5x shuffle on Drop Out or something similar, speed mods make the game easier. Period. Now days most people play everything on 1.5x-3x. It makes slow songs easy to read, it makes PAing far easier, etc. It's a personal preference if you want to use them or not, but no one can deny that they drastically increase performance for 99% of ddr players. Personally I don't use them except for a few exceptions (off sync songs and such) because if I do it's going to take all challenge out of the game and I'll get bored fast.

The way I was taught to play is to play with your own style. If you prefer mods, thats your style. If someone trash talks you for it, AAA a song with a mod E10.gif
