What is with this Stepmainia thing?

OK, I'm gonna sound like a total n00b saying this but, hear me out:
I downloaded Stepmainia onto my comp cuz I thought it would be cool to have a ddr simulator on my comp. So, I download it and then I go to play it and it has no songs. So then I'm thinkin- "OK, I have to load my own songs in..." so then I don't know where to get the right songs or how ot load them in.. OH, I also don't understand how you hook a dance mat up to a computer-

I know- I'm an idiot. But I'm completely new to SM...

can someone please help!

The official DDR songs are getting harder and harder to find, so I would just recommend going to BemaniStyle.com and get some custom songs. Browse the forums as well for more simfiles, and make sure to read the stickies before posting a new thread, or you will get in trouble.

If you go to Stepmania.com, you can download only a few songs. Try to avoid the DWI (Dance With Intensity) files, unless that is all you can find, because DWI files (I think) have a weird timing window, and sometimes doesn't even work with SM. Also, if you have LimeWire (it's a music download thing) you can download songpacks from 1st mix to Extreme.
