I wouldn't even demo the game out in public anywhere else except an anime/game/related con.
Para Para isn't terribly interesting to watch either, even not as a game.
But otherwise, DEFINITELY girls, especially if you're using the game.
I would still suggest against using Para Para in a school culture festival. Besides, Para Para hasn't been anywhere as popular for a couple years now. _________________

What you need to do is find someone that actually knows the routines to the songs or learn them yourself. I have a few videos of my boyfriend and his friends playing at a few different arcades. _________________

Problem is, you're doing this for a few hundred (thousand?) kids who don't know WTF it is, you're moving back and forth waving your arms around, and in some cases, your hips too (so, uh, guys shouldn't really do it unless they have absolutely no problem with people thinking they're gay. It's a closed-minded culture we live in.). It really is dull after a few minutes, and it doesn't really demonstrate any kind of real culture especially on a video game. _________________

For the first original question it depends on where you are.
ParaPara was a Japanese fad mostly for girls or young women. It was big enough that it seems to persist a little bit.
In America, PPP the game has a following in certain isolated areas, where there is probably a majority male players, but more girls than other games for sure.
As for "masculine" songs, just modify the moves if you are uncomfortable.
For culture at school you may consider a more traditional element. |

I wouldn't think it's more towards one gender at all. Heck on the box art it clearly states "For cutie gals and wild guys" or something to that effects. PPP is pretty fun, and I know a lot of guys and girls that play it, epecially at Milpitas. Yet, there are people that will think it's homosexual if guys play it, but who cares about them? _________________

If you're demoing it for an entire school, I hope you're ready to risk your reputation. _________________

If your school is full of homophobes and you want to demo a game, don't make it PPP. I mean, even DDR elicits its fair share of gay-bashing, and it's not nearly as fruity looking. I think PPP is great and there are lots of guys in this area who play it and know plenty of para routines...but I don't think any of us think it actually looks masculine. _________________

thanks for all of your input, and while i'm most certainly not going to demo it for the whole school(we're the biggest school in Connecticut with 3,300 students) I want to get it because it represents the actual Para Para dance, and though DDR will be there too, the only good word i can put in for it is that is has songs with Japanese lyrics. Para Para will probably be a big hit with the girls at my school, it just might take a little work to get them on the floor. I've memorized the dances to Boom Boom Fire(which i won't do at school) Hold On Me (which is a little iffy 'cause of the "lasso" part near the end) Night of Fire(hip swaying) and Eurobeat. I found out that most of the dances don't look too bad as long as you don't wave your arms too high or act too eccentric and are a little more relaxed looking. Also Night of Fire isn't too bad if I omit the hip swaying ( i save that for when i joke around with my friends). Also if anyone knows any vids of male dancers i can download i'd love to see some so I can prove to my other male friends that guys can play too. (I could always show them this board though) Also, keep the ideas coming! i'd like to see what you guys(by guys i mean anyone) think! I'm gonna go back to memorizing my para para dances now!
Oh yeah, maybe i should make my GF memorize Eurobeat and we can para together at the event with two controllers...That wouldn't look so bad _________________

My question is: why demo the game when you should be discussing the cultural influence of the dance style? You could mention the ganguro, the history of the music and how it is Italian but only for Japan, the clubs set up specifically for this, the magazines that depict para and ganguro, etc. If I were you and were going to go through this I would bring a projector and display videos of the VCDs (especially the special performances like on the 5th vcd - they are really cool looking even if the dancing isn't your cup of tea AND the straight guys can be all like OMG WTF hot asian chicks with skimpy clothes!). Learn one of those routines and demonstrate it, or find a couple of girls from something like drill team to learn and perform it with you. Mention the PS2 game but only as an aside to represent how popular the style was at one point. |

Yeah their are many videos of guys doing parapara, hell there is even an all male parapara team in Japan, some videos of men doing parapara would include Dancemania Presents: Happy Paradise*ParaPara Mania, where men are doing routines to Lucyfer - Sky High, Joe Rinoie - Syncronized Love, Ventura - Lupin The 3rd, and Judy Crystal - Tokyo All Ready. More Recent videos include some of the SEF Mach and SEF Gold videos from velfarre and if you want a "masculine" routine I would suggest looking Fightin' Over Freedom by Ace and a cool one to demo to every one would be Dancin' Alone by Pamsy. |

I dunno about demoing the PPP GAME itself, but I would certainly think that talking about Eurobeat, its influence in Japan, and showing what Para Para is and WHY it was popular is something to shoot for.
There are plenty of "masculine" routines out there, (Pamela by Matt Land being one that stands out in my mind. LOL.) but yes, there are some more girly routines in Para Para. And I don't think it's anyone's call to say whether or not it's more for girls than guys. Even though girls might be more interested in it.
It was successful in Japan mainly because of the fact that they've got quite an open-minded set of youth there and I don't think the boys had many problems with doing Para Para in the clubs.
And yes, the platform on the PPP machine, as well as the box for the PS2 game says on the front: "For Wild Guys and Cutie Gals! Get into the Eurobeat Ecstacy & Fire the High Tension Vibe! Super Bass Sound will make you the Prisoner of Dance!" _________________

I love playing Para Para Paradise and I've memorized some of the routines, along with working on more.
My friends and roommates always question my sexuality when I play the game.
I don't really care what they think about it because it's a lot of fun, but I dunno if I'd be able to go up in front of a school to do it...but if you're willing to take the risk, go for it!
Although I don't think the Parapara dancing style is that big anymore...
I really liked the idea of PPP though, the game itself is pretty easy if you just flail your arms around like a fool, but it's probably one of the best Bemani games to simulate a real type of dance. Even after you can beat the hard stuff, there's a lot of play value learning the dances and applying them to the different modes. _________________

Parapara isn't as big as it was during in 1998-2002 but it is on the rise again, Avex is even forming a new generation of ParaPara All Stars. |

I'm sure if it was sold for profit, Konami would clamp down on it (I'm sure it's a matter of time before they clamp down on ITG).[/quote]
