And which web browser would this be?

Aiieeee doesn't support RSS yet.

Which basically leaves 3rd party browsers. And if you can install a 3rd party browser...

http://www.phpbbhacks.com/download/4454

A very simple RSS feed add-on for phpBB. I use it on my own phpBB forums; took less than 5 minutes to set up, as it's essentially just an upload (with a few settings to adjust), rather than an actual "hack". May not work on an earlier version of phpBB, however.

It's not so much that we're against changes it's that we like to make changes very slowly. With >40,000 members even a simple change stands to annoy a lot of people if it goes wrong.

Many of the admin/moderators/developers have a technical background and we've learned that what should be an easy thing can lead to hours of work if you things don't go exactly according to plan. What we have now works, and something else might not work so for us to be willing to take that risk the change had better have some pretty big pay-off.

Having read the source for the mod. linked above I didn't see anything obviously wrong but I don't like the use of regular expressions to parse x/html and create xml.

If you're using almost any Pop3 e-mail client, you can set it to sit in the system tray and popup a "you've got mail!" message.

i was pointing out that not everyone has trillian.

you can also use XML on your msn homepage or yahoo homepage for instant updates anytime you open your borwser.

This looks like an old thread, but I'd rather update an older thread on the same topic than create a new one. Basically, i'd like to add ...

RSS readers are becoming more popular. Most browsers support them excluding IE, but support is on the way in version 7. It would make sense if an RSS feed was made for the headlines on the main page. This would make it easy on users like me that organize news with RSS readers versus relying on e-mail or visiting the site to get the latest news.

Eventually, it would make sense that the headlines page would include an RSS feed. I think the question is how long will it take ddrfreak.com to adopt an RSS feed since every browser will pretty much be on the bandwagon very soon.

Really the headlines aren't updated THAT often. It's not even multiple times a day, many times not twice in one week. Threads you can be notified via e-mail, and AIM, Trillian, MSN, and YAHOO all notify you if you have new mail. If you have a gmail account (which I highly reccomend), you can download Google Talk or Gmail notifier which pops up with the message Subject AND a portion of the message itself. Then you know instantly that you have a new message, thread reply, or if the newsletter were implemented, new announcement.

I don't think it's necessary to have anything RSS. I'm perfectly content with this website. Right now it's simple and easy to use and get info from every part of it. We don't need to complicate things and increase the risk of crashes just so some people don't have to click on a bookmark or type in ddrfreak.com to see the latest headlines.

I understand the e-mail thing and it works well. I'm just putting some site feedback out there so the right people can think about it as a possible use since RSS is more widespread now. If there is no need, then just ignore the request. I had thought this was a "suggestion" box.

Nothing really has to change or add to the complexity too much. I would imagine a separate RSS (XML) Feed could be established elsewhere on some free hosting area with the same data on the main page. I believe this would mean the data would need to be posted in two places, which i'm not wanting administrators to have to do. Maybe phpBB will include support down the road.
