I am very sorry for the downtime we have been experiencing lately. We will be upgrading the server in the next week, so there will probably be some more downtime in the near future. After that, however, everything should be stable again. Thanks for your patience. _________________

There isn't a PHPBB 2.2 anymore. It's not PHPBB3. And it isn't out yet, so we can't upgrade to it at the moment. _________________

I can't for the life of me figure out why you'd want us to output XML unless you wanted an automated parser. >.>
Is it that you *really* want an RSS feed? _________________

Well, you can already subscribe to specific threads in phpBB. At the bottom of a thread, under the reply button, hit the link that says "Watch this topic for replies".
As for the main page, I don't know anything about RSS myself, but I'm sure we could probably put together something for that. We're actually talking about having a sign-up newsletter for front-page topics that you could subscribe to if you wanted. _________________

Bah! XML sucks on the web (unless you're using it with xmlhttprequest, then XML is great and browsers suck).
I don't think it would be too hard to whip up an RSS feed for the headlines forum. I suppose there will be more talk about changes when phpbb3 is finally available. _________________

What would XML give you that thread/forum subscriptions can't? _________________

Additionally, I haven't been following XML 2.0 development very closely but the last time I checked it was still a draft and XML 1.0 Third Edition and 1.1 were the most recent recommendations. _________________

I ask again. What would XML give you that thread/forum subscriptions can't? _________________

xml gives you an instant feed of whats going on in the website without having to go through and check your e-mail every few minutes.
like if your watching a topic, and you go check your rss feed, and theres no updates, you'll see it right away without having to go to your e-mail. but if there is a new reply, you can click right on the link from the feed.
faster and easier than e-mail, and not too hard to implement.
for a quick example, check out www.megatokyo.com's rss feed. it tells you, almost up-to-the-minute, of whether or not theres an update available (a new cartoon, a new rant, w/e). and with firefox, you can add that feed as a live bookmark, so the feed is right in your links/favorites folder. _________________

then agian you could point the emial thing to yahoo
and have trillian on and itll tell you when you get new mail
no crappy xml codeing to be done here
and you dont have to check yoru emial every few minutes either casue trillian will tell you when you have some (and even who it is from in a little unobtrusive pop up) _________________

I hesitate to think that you'd be anywhere where you could run a RSS tracker and *not* an e-mail client.
An RSS feed for the main page is doable, and probably a good idea. RSS feeds for subscribed forums is probably more work than it's worth, IMHO. _________________

i already do that.
but it doesnt tell me if its ddr or otherwise in its popup, just "you have one(1) new mail"
and yes, each thread having xml is very large scale. _________________

Depending on how extensive the modification to the forums are when we upgrade to PHPBB2 it might be possible. If the site is still well formed (if not valid) XHTML transitional then it should be too hard to transform any given from to an RSS feed. I've done a little bit of work with XML transformations for work (mostly to provide HTML4 versions of XML data).
Per-thread subscriptions are way more work than it's worth as far as I'm concerned, but I think that maybe a feed showing the last 5 active topics in a forum or maybe the contents of the front page would be reasonably easy.
I'll have more interest in what XML and RSS/ATOM can do for the web when Mac OS X 10.4 starts shipping (Dashboard looks hella-good). _________________

i cant fathom how a click on trillian is any more work than a click on the rss feed _________________

can you depend on everyone getting yahoo mail and trillian?
or can you depend on everyone having a web browser? _________________
