Then take it up with Apple and demand an option to not allow mixed content on a page, add a rule to little snitch to forbid HTTP authentication requests to anywhere but a list of approved sites. If you just want the problem fixed: let any moderator or administrator know and one of us will take care of it. This was a problem for any browser at any time. Any user with access to Apache could cause these annoying popups in a matter of seconds.
Code: |
//on the forums

//in .htaccess
authtype basic
authname domain
authuserfile .htpasswd
require valid-user

When you see this sort of thing happening it's a user that screwed up. It's not a mac problem, a windows thing, or a firefox bug. If you let us know we'll fix it.
Quote: | I have had several of them when I was scrolling or a thread was loading. I have also had it happen upon opening or reloading a page. |
That's unfortunate. Have you submitted bug reports to Apple? It's a real shame that DDR Freak's code doesn't validate (and I'm not going to waste my time fixing that if/until a move to phpBB3) but bad code should not crash a browser. I cannot reproduce your symptoms on any of my macs (I've tried 7 machines running everything from OS X 10.2.6 and safari 1.0 through to 10.3.7 with Safari 1.3 Preview on everything from Bondi Blue iMacs to Dual 2.0 XServes). That's not to say that you're not having one, but that you should let the developer know (Safari isn't a mature product by any stretch) and make sure that the problem isn't somehow related to your setup.
Quote: | Nowhere in the previous posts is there anything even similar to an explicit "Moderator X, who programs for the site, is reviewing the code." |
Bad code should not crash a browser. Period. That being said, if I can reproduce the crash then I'll bust my buttocks to fix it.
Quote: | There are a couple of posts of people wanting to try to reproduce the problem, but it never actually says any of them are in a position to fix it. |
Reproducing a bug is the first step to fixing it. Just because the people responding aren't saying "I'm logged into Hydrogen right now working on the problem" doesn't me they're not interested.

But I am referring to the practice of programmers favoring Explorer or other PC/Microsoft/IBM applications etc. |
That's not us.
The last change that (IIRC Cutriss) was working on was tested in 15 different browsers on 5 different operating systems. While I am probably the only full time mac using Mod/Admin we have people using Linux, BSD, Win9x, Win2000/XP and probably even Solaris too.
Quote: | Generally speaking, macs are more reliable than PCs. |
If you want to argue mac/pc reliability you should make a thread in random chat because it's really not going to help anybody in this thread.
Quote: | I don't think the browser is at fault. |
As someone who makes a living writing software for, doing web development with, and maintaining a full mixed-OS network of Macs: I do. HTML shouldn't crash a browser, but if it does I think we're all willing to make the changes to help fix the problem. _________________

Ok, I did the first suggestion that evn mentioned, it unexpectically quits. The second sugesstion(to reinstall Safari) it, still quits unexpectically. I believe when it loads a particular ad on top of the page, the pointer turns into the "Spinning pizza wheel of death", then it crashes.
Yeah, I guess I have to use IE, Firefox, or Netscape for now to surf this site. It's all good. evn, I give you props to figure out a solution to this problem. Same props to you, Cutriss as well. _________________

I also suspect the problem is related to some of the banner ads, now that it is a suspicion I can try to find a common thread, maybe.
FYI I am on a:
PB G4, Osx 10.3.7
Safari 1.2.4 (v125.12)
I think, but am not certain, that a Vonage ad was up the last time it happened.
----
Immediately after posting the above I went to the index, then clicked on Random Chat.
The url bar was still filling up in blue, and no bahne ad was seen at the top. The spinning wheel came up and CRASH! More support for my theory that it has something to do with the banner ads loading up.
And is it just my imagination or did the number of ads increase recently? I remember seeing a LOT of the Ipod ads like 'shoot the whatever'. Now there's a lot of seemingly random stuff. DDR players buy a lot of medical supplies?!? Mortgages? Aren't most of the users teens?
Anyways, I think the banner ads are an issue.
-----------
After that edit I got to the Random chat category, clicked on the Ria suing a dead woman thread, and whammo, another crash.
The index loaded up a Vonage ad, woman in pofile on left side, 49.99 biz plan. That add seemed to be okay.
On the thread the ad hadn't shown itself yet and boom, down it goes.
-----------
Immediately after submitting the last submission it crashed before I could even try to open another page.... |

If you think it's related to the advertising I highly recommend installing PithHelment. Enable Machete and you can pretty much surf without any advertising on any site. If that stops the crashing we may be able to pin it down to the advertising or the containers they load in.
Every mac user should have PithHelmet installed anyway.

People always ask what the typical user would you do even if they had 1,000 GHz or a dozen computers. Now we know. But if you've got a better way to pass the time when you're waiting for the kettle to boil I'd love to hear it! _________________

I think it might be getting better...I've been on the site/fourms like a couple times today and its only happened once, I reset safari the other day to see if that would fix it but it didnt.
Firefox on mac sucks.
EDIT: I swear to god...10 seconds after i posted that it quit, I jumped to the arcade games fourm and then it quit. _________________

Throw one of your Contributors in on that list too.
I'm getting the crashes largely at random. I've had three in the last 30 mintues, normally when I go to post or even when I page down. I spend most of my time in Midwest, though I've gotten it in the Contributors forum too. _________________

Just as a matter of course I trust everyone has already tried repairing permissions and installing 10.3.8?
I'm having no luck reproducing the crashes. _________________

I'll check things out later when there's something worthwhile to post, but I don't think I can reproduce crashes because I have this installed. I just installed X.3.8 too. |

Exactly what's happening to me. Not too often, and I'm running the latest version. _________________

A site founder of another forum I visit suggested the idea it's the Javascript within some ads that cause Safari to crash.
I suggest to send a bug report within Safari and have them look into it. Maybe they can even contact the admins here for a little help. |
